Default Please, what's wrong with my little sisters scalp

Idk what it is. Something wrong, dandruff, buildup, all three. She says it itches a lot. I rarely seen her and seen her scalp today, and was shocked. She's raised by a single father who has a girlfriend who trys to help but has no experience in curly hair care. Help anybody?
Hopefully you can see in the pictures, flash made it too bright and no flash was too dark..

How often do they shampoo her hair and what hair care products do they use? I absolutely have to shampoo at least once a week or sometimes twice a week in the winter because of dandruff and itchies. Do they grease or oil her scalp? that can clog pores. Trader Joes Tea Tree Tingle works well for me. But you may want to take her to derm to make sure. My mom had to take me for skin and scalp issues as a child. HTH

No they don't oil it or anything. They use Cantu shea butter, a foam sealant from sallys, and regular sulfate shampoos. I wanna buy her a shampoo for scalp issues, like one from the shea moisture line, and start doing scalp massages with tea tree and coconut oil. They shampoo and wash her hair once or twice a week. I think her hair needs more attention to the scalp and less heavy products, and more shampooing. Idk. It's like crusty and there's a lot of it. I wanna take her to the derm when i can afford it cause this is crazy..

Just using any old shampoo doesn't work well for my scalp. Back when I used whatever after two days dandruff was back. If you use the right shampoo you probaly won't have to do it more often than you do now. Trouble is Most danduff shampoos are great for my scalp but dry out my hair. Not so with TJTTT. Edenbodyworks shampoo is good too but probably a little more drying. The sM purification mask is good. Some oils cause dandruff problems for me. I can't leave EVOO in my hair. If they want to stick to Cantu but it's too oily maybe using less or not all the way to her roots. I moisturize my hair with a version of the Kimmaytube recipe.

Have u tried the pediatrician? Local Clinic? School nurse? Walgreens take care clinic? It could be something other than dandruff or itchy product build up... I worry sooo much when kids are involved.... And if it is dandruff, excuse me for the freak out. I hope your little sis feels and gets better

Has she always had it? It could be something more than the products she uses. It could be psoriasis of the scalp, seborrheic dermatitis (thank you spell correct!), cradle cap, or yeast. The reason I think it's more than dandruff is because you say it's crusty. I don't think dandruff is crusty, it's usually flaky. You can have them take her to a dermatologist. But, if they don't want to do that, they could always just take her to her normal dr. He could tell her if it's more than that.

It's likely dermatitis or psoriasis and not products build up. (Though which products they use on her hair might make a difference). She'll probably have to use special shampoo or something. I recall that you can even have it on the scalp and not on the skin. Even in the eyebrows.

I hope they find out what it is! Good luck!

Yeah, I agree with the above posters. It is very likely that this is something like cradle cap.

This is super random, but does she use Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo by any chance? I've heard its been known to dry/clog pores in the scalp. I used it a few years ago and had serious clogging/crusting and when I stopped using it, it went away. I'd look into a different shampoo and shampooing more frequently..

Good luck with everything!
