Do you have success w/ twistouts & braidouts
I'm newly natural (less than a week) and I couldn't wait to try to do twist/braid outs on my hair. However, my results so far aren't good. The very back of my hair is a very loose curl, almost like a 3b texture, so the braids won't stay in. The rest of my hair is 3c and it just looks dry and like straw when I take the twists out.
I'm just curious if other 3c's have much luck with twist & braid outs? I'm not sure if mine will be better when I have more length....right now I'm quite short.

PS. I do use a leave-in, styler and oil on my twists and they still look dried out when I take them down.

Neither twist outs nor braid outs work for me. Braiding and twisting my hair just straightens it out especially if I start with wet hair. My braid/twist outs look like loose beach waves or bad roller sets. I have been natural all my life and tried every method out there before I just accepted that they just don't work for me. I am a wash and go girl all the way.
I will say that if the problem you are having is dryness when you take your braids and twists down that may be an indication that you hair is not retaining moisture at an optimal level. I used to have that problem; my hair would feel and look soft and moisturized when it was curly but as soon as my curls were stretched out it would feel and look dry. I have had great success with the Curly Girl method and have not experienced dryness since I started following that method. HTH

Any suggestions on products to use?

Extra virgin coconut oil made a super difference in my hair . I bought several products to help with that dry look then saw a girl on you tube that used it . I am now hooked, dryness is not a problem anymore for me.

Ha! Those styles have never worked on my hair. I think you need a tighter curl pattern to actually pull those styles

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I may try to do one down the line with blown out/stretched hair...but I don't think my hair is going for that when it's wet/curly.

I'm not sure hair type is the problem because there are plenty of 3c's on CT and on YT that do successful to's and bo's. 3c is still kinky but for a lot of people getting this style to work for them takes practice and experimenting. Actually people with relaxed hair my aunt included have done to's and bo's with a different technique of using rollers on the ends. I'm a 4a/3c mix and I never do mine on wet hair. Only damp. Otherwise they would unravel. Plus I can't do chunky because those unravel too. Maybe whatever leave in you are using isn't moisturizing enough for your hair. I love the kimmaytube li recipe.

They work great for me I do them all winter. My hair hates wash n gos in the winter cause I live in a cold climate. My hair despises the cold lol in the summer its all wash n gos though.

No. I tried it once on dry hair---it was a disaster. On damp hair, it doesn't stay. On wet hair.... just no.
I've coated my hair with leave-in, and it still ends up dry. Fortunately, I live in Cali, so year round wash-and-go's are do-able. The occasional braid, up-do, 2nd-day hair style thrown in.

My hair HATES twists outs. It doesn't matter if they are small, chunky, or flat twists my hair always comes out frizzy and the ends are always tangled. So wash n gos and protective updos are my staples.

The same thing happened to me when I first did my chop. It took almost two months before my hair even started to curl on its own. I thought I'd left relaxed ends on. Now that I have more length its better. I have to put the braids in rollers when I'm done with each one. My profile pic is as good as it gets so far either that or a big 70's fro! I'm about 10 months in and I still haven't worked out all the kinks... Get it? Anyway. Try the rollers, it may be the thing.
Also in the morning after you take the rollers out and before you take the braids out use a diffuser to make sure its dry that will cut out on frizz. Add oil and products before you take the braids out too.

^That's super fab! Love love the look! I can only wish...lol.
I also can't get the hang of twistouts and braidouts. Braidouts look piece-y on me, and my twistouts are just everywhere. The curls are going right, left, up, down AND sideways...a mess. I'm transitioning though, hoping it gets better once I get rid of the permed hair.
I'm going to try two strand braids tonight on damp hair. Let's see if that works.

Very pretty. I'm glad you didn't give up. Did you put rollers on the ends? I usually do.
The hair style I'm still trying to conquer is bantu knot out. I'm working on it.

Nope I put about 18 chunky twists with my CES by sheamoisture while my hair was dripping wet and twirled the ends around my finger til they curled left the twist in for a day and a half and gently separated the twists into individual curl clumps and fluff fluff fluff. I think my previous attempts failed because I was pulling my hair too taught so my hair would come out wavy bleh this time I just twisted and did not put any tension. Here's day 2
