New to DevaCurl Dandruff/oily hair

I recently purchased the trial kit of Deva Curl which included no poo, conditioner, arcangel, and set it free. I used the no poo and conditioner about 6 times and my hair became extremely curly and less frizzy but my scalp had small red patches and large patches of dandruff. i would shower at night and by the next morning my hair was extremely oily. I really want to continue the curly girl routine but my hair was so oily and gross! What should I do/am doing wrong?

The Devacurl No-Poo has menthol as an ingredient. Some people have reactions to it, so you may want to switch to a menthol-free no-poo (or their low-poo, which is also menthol-free) to see if that may be the culprit. A lot of folks had issues with Wen as well because of the menthol. I personally have had no problems but that could account for your red patches and irritation.

Sounds like an allergy to me. Around here, Deva is a love/hate line. Many of us started out with Deva, think we like it. Then move on to things we like MUCH better.

The best way to choose ingredients/products is by hair properties. Here's a link to help you with yours Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics Once you determine your properties, look for folks with hair like yours and see what they use (in signatures.) It's the best place to start.

Totally agree w/Kathymack! Skip Deva-too expensive. If your new to CG start of w/inexpensive stuff based on your hair's properties. There are lots of drug store products to choose from.

Thanks everyone! would it be ok to try drug store conditioner and still use deva products?

I have almost the whole line of deva curl products and some I can live without. However, like some mentioned u may have had a reaction. I've used department store products and didn't like the the build up of they way they feel on my hands when applied. With deva curl I wash with no poo then I condition with Joico moisture balm leave on for a few minutes rinse, then apply a small amount of one condition. I then take a nice amount of CO and apply that to my drenched hair. So yes mix products that's the only way to see what works. My go products are deva curl and Joico. I have my professional license so I get my products at warehouse prices. That's why I have so much. If u kno someone with a license ask them if u can join them on a visit to Ur local Cosmoprof or Industry Source and stock up on some products worth the buck.

You can use whatever works for you! When most of us first come on nc.com, we want to try everything that anyone mentions. As you get to know your hair and what it likes, it gets better. My hair prefers the products from the online, boutique type companies. Mass produced drugstore and salon products rarely do it for me. My hair doesn't care for the chemicals. I stay away from them, especially polyquats.

As I said in my post above, you should determine your hair properties and use that as a place to start. It's the best way to determine what ingredients/products your hair might like.
