Default Product Buildup Even though Silicone Free

Even though I use silicone free products I'm still suffering from horrible product buildup. I'm going to attempt to rinse out the conditioner completely from my hair and not use any products after that and see if it helps. I hope my hair looks presentable.

Are you sure your products are silicone free?

When I look up the ingredients for Herbal Essence Totally Twisted gel, PEG 12 Dimethicone is listed as an ingredient (Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Scrunching Gel | drugstore.com). There's also PVP and VP/Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate Copolymer. PVP and copolymers are used to make plastic and fake leather products. I find they REALLY builds up in my hair.

The Aussie Hi Shine Hair Spray also contains PEG 8 Dimethicone and copolymers (Aussie Dual Personality Hair Spray, Hi Hold + Hi Shine, Maximum Hold | drugstore.com).

Are you still using these products?

I stopped using the hair spray. As for the gel I was told PEG 12 dimethicone was water soluble so it wouldn't build up. However it does anyway. Which is why I'm going product free today to see if my hair can be presentable.

PEG-silicones are water solubale. What about polyquats? Those can cause build up. Most commercial gels have them. A LOT of products have them, actually. Check your products for that. Clarify if needed.

What about your hot oils, any mineral oil or polyunsaturated veg oils that sit on the surface rather than be absorbed? There are silicones in the Eversleek too I think, perhaps water soluble but I would have thought if you layer them on with other ingredients that build up they can stick. Maybe go more natural and/ or for oils that will absorb not sit on the surface? If you are no longer using those products either it would be great if you edited your signature so we can help you better.

I switched from Devaone to the Suave Coconut conditioner and my hair doesn't have as much buildup. Not sure if u can try that conditioner, but maybe it would help.

Have you tired conditioner-only styling? ACV rinses also help.
