Limp, lifeless, and stringy hair

I am fairly new to product testing but I have 3b to 3a hair. I believe I am low to normal porosity (my hair will take as much product as I will give it), and normal everything else.

My current routine is suave nautrals coconut RO and LI, coconut oil, followed by LA looks sports gel and then air drying. I have tried plopping and it doesn't seem to do much benefit.

My hair has been looking worse and worse and I am not sure what to do. It always looks frizzy, stringy and my curls arent clumping very well.

I think maybe that those products are to thick for my hair? I tried sallys version of Matrix Biolage conditioning Balm but that seemed to weight my hair down. I also tried the shea moisture (yellow label) but that did the same thing.

My hair tends to get weighed down when I wear it long so I just did a big cut of abiut 6 inches and it doesn't seem to have helped much.

Any advice would be great.

Tried a clarifying shampoo?

You may simply have product built up.
Suave naturals was awful for my hair. I had better luck with V05 but the best cheap cowash has been tresseme naturals. My hair is happy with this for a cowash and i can use it as a leave in, but my current leave in is yes to carrots and my hair loves it. I also ordered some yes to blueberries to try next.

I add a few drops of oil to my gel also. Either coconut oil rubbed over my palms then emulsify the gel before scruching in. I have LA looks because its so cheap, not my fave though becuase of the parabens, but it gets the job done.

I am trying to co wash but I did try the shea moisture shampoo. Do you have a clarifying shampoo that you suggest?

I almost bought the say yes to carrots yesterday, but which tresemme naturals product would you suggest? I would just like something that helps.

If your hair will take as much product as you "will give it," it's high porosity. Low porosity hair has difficulty absorbing just about anything.

I am in your EXACT boat, and cowashing just didnt work for me. If your hair is easily weighed down, look for a gentle shampoo (i found SM builds up) such as yes to cukes (cheap at walgreens and target) devacurl low or no poo (a bit pricey) and there are a few more someone else could suggest. Im still figuring out my routine because i have the SAME problem. Yes to cukes is a great shampoo, but i use it daily whivh can dry ur hair eventually. Its nonstripping to people who use it every other day or farther apart. I did try (yestsrday) washing my hair with no shampoo then used giovanni sas as a RO, fsg, then coconut oil after ot dried to scrunch out the crunch, and i had AMAZING hair. I am going to try that but layer a hardhold gel over my fsg and see if itll last longer. Today i tried a suggestion to dilute my shampoo, and i put coconut oil on wet hair before my gel this time instead of usin it when it dried, and my hair was limp and oily frizzy again! i think coconut oil on wet hair may be too much for us.

I have the same exact hair. I switch shampoo and conditioner almost every wash. I stopped brushing my hair, and I dry it with a t-shirt.

If I usethe same shampoo two times in a row, it looks horrible.

I tried the slip test (running your fingers the wrong way on your hair) and mine was smooth. When I got my hair cut over a year ago my hair was very dry and she said it would soak up anything. So I don't know what I am any more.

I almost think it may just be the coconut oil building up and weighting me down, which is sad because it makes my hair soft.

In general, low porosity hair does not do well with straight oil/butter. I can't use the SM Coconut & Hibiscus products--even in the minute amounts that I used, they just sat on my hair and had to be washed out.

Is there another way to determine porosity?

I have similar hair and was having the same issues, this is what I do...

Sunday: I do an ACV rinse followed by Biolage sulfate shampoo. I don't use sulfate shampoo any other day. I then deep condition with a mask of honey/coconut oil/Biolage balm for about a half hour. My products are Sebastian Potion 9 (generic kind from Sallys) and scrunching in Ouidad Climate Control.

Monday/Tuesday: cowash with Trader Joes Tea Tree Tingle conditioner then condition with Loreal Rosemary/Mint conditioner.

Wednesday: I do a protein treatment with k-pak for 5 minutes then condition normally.

Thursday: shampoo with sulfate free shampoo and condition

Friday/Saturday same as Mon/Tues

........
Might seem like a lot of variation but my hair looks great every day (not to toot my own horn, but toot toot ha). The apple cider vinegar rinse is really important because the water is really hard where I live. My hair seems to appreciate the sulfate shampoo too because I think there is some product buildup as the week goes on.

Oh, after my hair is done air drying scrunch it with a few drops of coconut oil. Hope some of this helps!

What's working this week:
Shower: Garnier 3x Nutrition shampoo 1x per week, cowash with Tres Semme Naturals, condition with
GF Sleek and Shine deep conditioner
Styling: Tres Semme Naturals as leave in, L'Oreal Melting gel and HE SMU raked in, LOOB and AG Re:Coil scrunched in, Jojoba Oil scrunched in when totally dry

How do u rinse with acv? I have the biolage shampoo and condish, and could do the mask, too. I use coconut oil to SOTC too! coconut oil is my hg, espevially if i tease my roots it fixes the curls that got separated from it

I had this exact same problem like two weeks ago! I recommend doing a few deep treatments and staying away from protein! I use a lot of conditioner then put my gel in then make sure to finger twist your curls or define them in some way. This really helped the most. I think my hair kinda needed a reminder on how to curl properly lol. After the two weeks my hair is back to its defined soft curls!
Love my auburn 3b/3c curls!! Favorite products are Treseme Naturals conditioner and DevaCare ArcAngel(<---miracle for definition!) I really just want to GROW MY HAIR OUT!! It's not really working...
Im cutting back on protein bc ik its what caused dry breakage and roughness on my hair, i actually used a sulfate shampoo to clarify since i havent in three months and have tried soooo many products, deep conditioned without protein, and my hair feels better. Now im going to still use protein, just less, and im going to try cowashing with a clransing conditioner i just got and see how it goes!

Too many products I think? Maybe try using a cream or mousse instead of gel. It's lighter on the hair. Also, don't apply too much gel/mousse to your roots. Just adds more weight!

I have to diffuse my hair until the roots are nearly dry, then I air dry the rest. The rest of my hair doesn't dry as quick.

If it's stringy, I learned to take the hair (after I've put mousse in it, before I dry it) and curl it around my fingers to make the curl as big or as small as I need. It helps my hair define its curl better and makes other hair curl in a similar pattern around it.

That last bit is what helps my hair form curl easier. I'd highly reccommend switching to a mousse if you're having limp hair issues. Just my two cents!

I found that if I apply any oil especially CO to wet hair the result is weighed down limp stretched (almost straight) out curls. I ONLY use CO as a pre-poo treament (works great) and I ONLY use Grapeseed oil AFTER my curls have completely dried to seal and add shine. It does not weigh my hair down but tames any fuzzy sections. ALSO it sounds like you may want to clarify. Periodically I clarify with an ACV rinse and helps with hard water and product build up. I also stopped using products with silicone and I saw a tremendous improvement in my curl pattern...bouncy happy curls !!
