Chopped long hair off... help growing it out?

Like Tree5Likes

I chopped my hip length 3a hair to a bit longer than chin length. I just wanted a change after years of having long curly hair. It was quite liberating and I feel so FREE. I can't explain it but to each their own. I'm going to grow it out long again and maybe I'll even donate it. But this short hair care has me totally stumped! Its a lot harder to take care of than I thought. Some fun things to do as I grow it out? How often would I have to trim it? Any tips on growing it out in a healthy way? Styling tips? How to keep the ends protected etc.? Just share your experiences with me I would love to know how your journey went or how its still going.
Thanks!

I trim about every 2 months, when it starts losing shape. I have a LOT of hair, so there's lots of shaping to be done. Just go when you feel you need it or you want some shape.

As far as "fun" things to do while growing it... PFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTT!!! lol

Just see what your hair can do, and do the faux ponytail with pinned up pieces that won't fit when you get fed up. I'm growing mine to donate as well, I've always wanted to do this since I was young, but could never grow it out healthy.

Have you tried the LOC method? This seems the only way my hair stays hydrated for more than half a day.

Aww yes thanks for replying!! What is this method you speak of? Please do elaborate! I have to relearn everything for this new length. We can grow together then! Okay so what products for winter? This is especially tricky. My hair is also one length right now but maybe I can get a deva in December or something. The lady just wet it all, then chopped straight across, and then put barely noticeable long layers. Which I don't mind for now but sucks in terms of curl potential. What is your routine?
I can't see siggys because I'm on the app.
Your hair ia beautiful btw!

I'm thinking about cutting my hair - really cutting it, not just a trim - within the next few weeks. I can hopefully post some pics of that cut in different styles. Maybe that could help you with trying to find more styles, even though my hair is curlier than yours in general ... so yeah.

I really enjoyed it when it was super long, but like you, I need a change. I grew it down to TBL, then I cut it to lower back, then just below my shoulders (in back) in May and now it's already at BSL and I'm just plain annoyed. I want something shorter, something cute. Something with attitude. If it sucks I'll just grow it back out again. If you end up feeling overwhelmed with your short hair, you can grow it back out again too

in addition to moving my part a little more or less to the side, i also can change it (depending on weather) to either just wave at the top and then curl, or start curling at the very top. both different looks.
then there are always accessories. :-) sometimes i clip up one side (the side that my hair is parted away from) with a large barrette, usually gives it a very nice look no matter how my hair is. or clip both sides up, or use headbands, either stretchy which is one look, or hard headbands that i have in different styles.
and i think with shorter hair the products we use have a greater impact on styling. for me, more gel-type stylers means curlier, and sometimes i'll do a conditioner-only style but if i use a deep treatment as my leave in, it can be very curly.
when you go for a haircut, deva or not, make sure whoever cuts your hair totally understands LONG layers!! i'd be very specific about that, making sure if they do a wet cut they understand the shrinkage!!
i generally go for a trim every 4 months. this time i may stretch it to 5 as i am liking the slightly longer look. it all depends on your hair, how much you want to let it go from phase to phase each month or so.

Thanks! Naturally Curly posted a new article the other day to facebook about it. Here's the link. There's also the LCO method, which is just a different order of layering products. I much prefer the LOC. I was afraid of buildup, because products seem to just sit on my hair sometimes, but not at all I was quite surprised. I guess sealing my leave in makes all the difference for me.

I co-wash with protein rich V05, and use Nature's Gate Henna for leave in. I really love it shine it gives me, and it's super hydrating. When my underlayer needs a curl boost I use CJ Repair Me PT on just the underlayer, since it's too short to finish the curl pattern. I've been sealing with SM Reconstructive Elixir, and using SM Curl & Style Milk (generously) as my styler over the oil. I have much much less frizz and my hair is hydrated all day long, I love it! I find myself using much more product, which is good. I barely could use any before. I use the super soaker method to scrunch all my products in. I can't diffuse or I get fuzzy and poofy.

I really like thecurlystace on YouTube, she has some good quick styles for short hair.

Do you have a picture of your hair? I'm curious to see what it looks like!

I was kinda disappointed in the last stylist I saw. She's supposed to be great with curly hair, and she understood shrinkage, which was great. But she stacked my hair in the back, after I told her that I wanted to grow it. So she basically took tons of hair off in the back. Granted, I told her I wanted shape, but I think this hairstyle is way overdone these days. I wasn't sure of what to tell her to do. I don't exactly like the longer hair in front, because my curl pattern increases the longer my hair gets, and the front of my hair is like 2" shorter than the rest of my hair and very detached.

@Korkscrew you should go for it! I don't know if you know who shamelessmaya is on youtube but she chopped all her curls off. I was quite inspired. As for you lets all grow together later! I promise you that it is such a FREE feeling I cannot explain it. You just have to do it yourself and see! Please do keep men updated on what you end up doing.

Thank you so much rbb I really needed your help! One thing though what about winter products for you? Do you/can you plop? I will keep the long layers in mind my next deva. I still don't fully understand the "dews and don't" (see what I did there). Haha I'm such a dork.
You are right though it is so versatile! Hair does grow back though (;
Its nice to break free sometimes. The lady that was cutting my hair was so shakey. She was like are you sure about this? Actually a few people in the salon were so shocked. It was a bit awkward haha. Nonetheless, everyone I see seems to ask -WHY? its kind of annoying. I think its just because long hair is what so many people seem to want these days. I'm loving this nonetheless (:
Please keep me posted ladies!

@sixelamy I would actually reccomend cutting your hair yourself. I've done it and I think it will be even easier with short hair. Curl by curl just like the cg book says. If you think I'm crazy I would highly reccomend just being firm. It sounds silly but if your serious and consistent with a stylist they'll have to obey lol. I speak from experience! I'm usually the hairstylist persecutor that goes along with my friends and family that can't speak up. Maybe pictures would help?

@sixelamy I forgot to mention tha I I usually don't like my hair right after a cut. I always start loving it once it gorws in a bit more im not sure why. It just seems to come together a bit more if that makes sense?

I too like my hair better a couple weeks after a cut. It's not strange at all, I've always felt this way. Maybe it just takes time for the hair to adapt? Who knows.

sixelamy -- long layers are long, meaning the crown layers are relatively long, not short like 2 inches. maybe the first layer would hit between eye and ear???? (i have a deva cut, so it's not layers but pieces, long and short. cut like a bonsai, LOL! but i love it for my hair.)
sometimes if you say layers they will cut the crown to like 2" which is short dry, and if they do a wet cut.......

bcb -- do not confuse dew point with humidity, very different. for curly hair, dew points are important. rule of thumb -- 40 to 60 is great for curly hair, below 40 is dry and moisture will leave our hair, making it very dry. i always seal in low dews. about 60 there is lots of moisture in the air, so our hair can take in too much moisture, making it poofy. again, sealing works.
for winter, lower dews, i generally use heavier conditioners/leave ins and i always seal. and NO glycerin as that will draw moisture from the hair.

Here's a picture. I just woke up but hey it doesn't get more natural than this. I want to buy the book too. But I here there is another edition or something? I will have to steal your routine as it grows in a bit more hehe. Oh and by long layers I meant barely there almost one length. But that was because I just went to a random stylist and I didn't want a razor to my head by any means! I'll probably add more "depth" to it as it grows in. Its supposed to be one length and so are my bangs but I like flopping them to one side. Which makes it look uneven if that makes sense? But I don't care

Oh okay so you meant more like actually noticeable but still long layers. I want more layers now but I think its safe to wait for a deva stylist to do those. For the time being I'll have to rock this one length although the curls kind of stack on top of each other :/.

BCB, your cut is terrific! You must be psyched that your routine will be so much shorter.

Yep, I do recall the thrill of getting it cut short. But that was quite some time ago so I look forward to having that feeling again (assuming I do go through with the cut haha).

Congrats on your lovely new look (Your long hair was lovely too.)

Thanks so much! It was quite a windy day today too. Many have told me it makes me look more mature in a good way and that I really do like a college kid now rather than a jr. High schooler lol. I hope you go through with it, its an amazing feeling. Just don't think about it too much and you'll love it! I'm so used to being heavy handed with product so I'll have to get used to using less!
Let me know if you do I would love to see!!

I think I can see what they mean about the "mature" look of your shorter do,

Yeah, I'm not too concerned. If I do it and it's not so great, I'll just wait a little while and cut it again. I've had a gazillion hair cuts, colors and styles over the years, so it will hardly be an earth-shattering experience. I've just been a little lazy about scheduling a cut lately.

Anyway, I'll try and provide pics once I get the cut (whether that's in a few weeks or sometimes later).
