Default Concern about Pixie Curl Method

I've just finished transitioning and have had great results styling my hair using the methods from Lorraine's book.

But, I can only really leave my hair to dry naturally on the weekends and since my hair needs to be washed twice a week that I means I have to wash on a weekday ... and with work I don't really want to go in with my hair soaking wet, so I was thinking of diffusing once a week.

The only trouble is I've been using heat and chemicals on my hair to get it straight for about ten years and when I started transitioning I cut out heat. It really made a difference and now I feel like I'm at a place where my hair is healthy and (mostly) free from heat damage. I have next-to-no breakage now and am really pleased with all the steps I've taken to get my hair healthy.

So the thought of using a hair dryer once a week really worries me. For anyone who diffuses often, what do you do to avoid heat damage? Have you noticed your hair is drier or breaking?

Let me know ladies, as I'm working myself into a bit of a panic worrying I'm going to undo all the strides I've made toward healthy hair!

I wet and diffuse on high heat every day for about five minutes with no damage apparent. Then, I air dry for a few hours (maybe three.) That way, my hair is wet, but not soaking wet. If I'm in the car, it may dry more quickly because of heat or air conditioner.

Some things that help. I use CLU towels to scrunch out a lot of the water after applying products, a professional dryer and get my hair cut every six weeks.

I wouldn't worry too much, as long as your not using high heat you shouldn't have damage. I pixie diffuse about every two or three days medium heat low speed and haven't noticed any damage.

kathymack - I've never thought to scrunch with a towel after applying the products! Will definitely give that a go

Rytoka - Thanks for the reassurance. Good to know nobody is having any issues with damage. I guess I'm just panicking for nothing! I'm just so excited to finally be accepting of my hair and be in a place where it's behaving and I can manage it and it's not a dry mess - I don't want to ruin that! But the general consensus seems to be that it's all good, so I'm officially relaxing about it.

Do either of you guys apply a heat protector before diffusing (like a serum or spray or something)?

Microfiber towels really help me dry more quickly!

You want to remove water weight from your hair to keep it from pulling out the curl. Scrunching also helps form the curl.

No heat protectant. I don't do it more then about five minutes. I don't have a lot of hair. Other thing is you want your gel to start to "set."

When I diffuse (on the very rare occasion), I use the "cool" setting. It doesn't give off much heat at all, but it also takes a lot longer to dry. I use it mainly to get the dripping out and set my gel before going into work. Once dry, I fluff and all is well!
