My Curly Girl Journey

Like Tree3Likes

Oh and if you feel oils are weighing you down go to basics. Washing conditioning and doing one styler. You have enough curl pattern you can probably get away with that. And your FSG doesn't have to have oil in it.
Thanks chupie. I think I'm going to toss my FSG & make a new batch without oil. & Perhaps my curl refresher too but I did IAGirls protein treatment last night & I might need that stuff now !

check out my hair lol. I'm waiting with my kid at the bus stop & going back home after. can't believe I left the house like this!

it feels fine not like straw or anything very soft

My hair feels so good after the protein treatment! This morning when I washed with Loreal's EverCurl Cleansing Conditioner there was barely any hair in the drain! That's unheard of lately for me. That's the reason I started this Journey - so much hair in the drain that it clogged up the shower. So I think my hair is protein starved.

I'm concerned this EverCurl Cleansing Conditioner needs 8-10 pumps?! But if it works really well for me and I don't need a separate conditioner then it wouldn't be so bad I guess. Jury is still out, but it could possibly be HG status. I dunno yet.

That's all I used this morning, no other conditioner, but I did use my FSG. I still think I need to tweak that recipe a bit and lower the oil content or do away with it altogether.

Used some Organix Tea Tree Shampoo this morning with Tressemme Naturals conditioner & FSG. Love my hair today. Nice, big & fluffy & full of curls. Perhaps a touch of frizz.

Will go back to cowashing tomorrow.

Your hair is looking great....keep going. Just to answer some of your questions or clear up some misinformation you've been given.

1- suave naturals conditioners do not have silicone, so you're good there.

2- yes, you used way too much oil in your FSG. I only use 1/4 teaspoon of oil per cup and my hair does well with oils.

3- if you want a truly sulphate free shampoo to use regularly, yes to cucumbers is good (it says sulphate free right on the bottle- get that one).

4- if you really want to try the CG method, I wouldn't mess around with shampoos that are questionable. Low sulphate is not sulphate free, and there is a difference.

Do you have a trader joes near you? The tea tree tingle conditioner is an amazing cowash conditioner,is cheap, and smells like mint, lol. You would love it!

Good luck!

Thanks Chloe92us! I do have a Trader Joe's about 15 miles away. I will keep your reccomendations in mind, but I'm on a product freeze! lol Gotta make do with what I already have for now.

I'm going to make some new FSG this week. I seem to have gotten a lot more than I can use in a week's time in my last batch. I got one of those squeeze ketchup bottles full of it and I had even more than that but threw it out.

I just have to figure out more usable amounts of flaxseeds, aloe and oil. Not sure of measurements that would get me an amount that I can use before it spoils. I keep it refrigerated & so far it seems fine. Not exactly sure how long it keeps yet.

Since I did the protein treatment, I haven't had any limp, lifeless issues. I'm not sure if it's the PT or Loreal's Evercurl Cleansing Conditioner or a combination of them both. I've even conditioned my hair after rinsing out the cleansing conditioner & it seems fine.

I like to go over my hair once it's dry with some additional FSG or some curl refresher. Wish it didn't take so dang long to dry!! I might experiment with a diffuser. I do have one, but don't like to mess with it much.

KellyofCurls- I have been getting curious about making my own flaxseed gel or aloe vera gel. I'm still deciding, but long story short ended up coming across your post. I don't know if you have any or if it would break the rules for your product freeze but naptural85 on youtube adds vitamin E oil as a preservative. She has the same ratio of seeds to water as your recipe. She says it will last for 3 weeks with that. The blog chocolate hair vanilla care shows adding powdered vitamin C or crushing up the tablets to their aloe vera gel to make it last longer than a week.

Thanks lori-mattox! I had heard that before. I did add tea tree oil, but not sure if it works the same. It's what I had so it's what I used.

Yesterday my hair felt kind of dry so this morning I cowashed with Sauve Naturals, conditioned with Tresemme Naturals & sprayed in some leave in conditioner (Sauve naturals with a lot of water) & plopped. Used my FSG and am waiting for it to dry to see what the verdict is.

Eh... Didn't like all that conditioner in my head today. Too heavy weighing my hair down.

Tomorrow I'll try a different combination. Today when I co-washed I used quite a bit of conditioner. That seemed to work pretty good. Maybe I just don't need to conditioner on top of the cowashing? Maybe I'll skip the 2nd conditioner.

When I co-wash I only do that step. I do the LCO or LOC method out of the shower, with leave-in/Liquid, a styler (Cream), and an oil. It sounds like your hair might be fine with using your aloe vera juice and/or water alone for your liquid/leave-in. The juice may also act as your sealer or oil; and I'd consider your FSG as your styler. Good luck!
Today I went back to the Loreal Evercurl Cleansing Conditioner and Sauve Naturals for conditioning. Tomorrow I'm going to try soley cowashing with Sauve to see how that goes.

Y'all might be wondering why is this crazy girl talking to herself here. I do appreciate everyone that has offered suggestions and replied to my thread here. I started this because it helps to think out loud sometimes and also to keep track of my crap. & Because I don't know one person that would be interested in talking about hair this much. hehe.

Decided it was time to make some new FSG. I found a different recipe. Tried it. DIdn't work. So now I came here looking to see what I did last time. And here it is! Woot.

I used a recipe from Ashley's Green Life on youtube last time. I was looking at a thread that said 1 cup of water & 1/4 cup of seeds. That ain't working for me at all.

Today's FSG seems better. I watched the video on Ashley'sGreenLife on youtube again. I noticed that she gets about 1 cup of FSG and that's what I got this time. Last time I made it I got a lot more which leads me to believe I didn't boil it long enough & it had too much water in it. Or something. Anyway this time I got about 1 cup of gel. That seems like a much more usable amount than I got last time. Last time I filled up my bottle and had to dump some out.

So for oil I used tea tree oil again and this time instead of 1 tbsp I only used a few drops and I used about a 1 tsp of aloe vera juice.

I'm still prefering my hair after I've used Loreal's Evercurl cleansing conditioner. I need to work out some sort of schedule.

Fri. - cleansing conditioner
Sat. - protein treatment / cowash
Sun. - cowash
Mon. - cleansing conditioner
Tues. - cowash
Wed. - lopoo / condish
Thurs. - cowash

Something like that... Just thinking while I'm trying. I know I did the PT last week on Thurs. or Fri. I don't know if I need a weekly treatment, but maybe. It seems to like my hair. hmmm...

Today I did a IAGirl's PT & then cowashed with Tresemme Naturals. I plopped, did FSG and difused a bit. I'm feeling like it's a good hair day so far.

I thought I would start a list of products I want to try for future reference. I'm not purchasing anything any time soon. Trying hard anyways, but I'd like to start a list of things I would like to try down the road.

1. Cure Care Hair & Skin Conditioner- Sally's $8.59 ~
protein conditioner

2. VO5 Kiwi Lime Conditioner

3. Sauve Naturals Cocoanut Conditioner

4. Peppermint Tea Tree Tingle shampoo - Trader Joe's

5. Giovanni Smooth as Silk

So I'm curious about how people cowash. I haven't seen it addressed here and perhaps I just haven't done enough digging or reading.

Do cowashers use a lot of conditioner to cowash? Because I've read that there are some cleansing agents in conditioners. I think I may have gone about cowashing wrong because at first I wasn't really using that much conditioner. I think that going from a more mainstream routine of shampooing and conditioning is a learning curve. So when cowashing do you use a lot of conditioner? More than you would use to simply condition alone?

I went to Sally's today. I had an extra $10 and wanted to try Cure Care Conditioner. All they had was a gallon jug. I'd like to try it, but that's quite a commitment. I saw a bunch of different products I have seen mentioned here on Curl Talk, but that was the only one I knew I wanted to try.

So I walked out without making a purchase.

I did slip a couple of conditioners into my cart at the grocery store tho. Pretty easy to do when they're so cheap!! I got the Sauve Coconut Naturals Conditioner and VO5 Kiwi Lime something or another conditioner as well.

Not loving my hair today, but I think it has more to do with my haircut than anything else. I think the curls look ok. Still experimenting and I haven't fallen into a regular routine.

Today I didn't really wash my hair just conditioned it in the shower. I just cowashed it yesterday. Then I decided I wanted to try leave in conditioner sprayed into soaking wet hair and then using my FSG and then plopping. It seemed to work pretty good. Perhaps I'll skip the leave in next time tho. With a barrette I think my hair would be perfect. It's definitely the haircut. My hairstylist was distracted when I saw her last. I did notice a couple of curls hanging lower than the others and I mentioned it & she fixed it, but looks like fixing that kind of thing at the end of the haircut after it's been styled isn't the best idea.

I don't want to find anyone new..... I hate hate hate trying new places. Eek.

Kelly, when I co-wash I use as much conditioner as I feel is necessary to get enough slip to detangle in the shower but that's only because I detangle only when wet. So far, this isn't different from when I shampooed every time I conditioned- I've always detangled in the shower. (Side note: I've tried detangling while dry with different oils/conditioners, but it felt like a) I lost so much more hair and b) I actually hurt my scalp in the sections of hair that are the curliest no matter how gentle I was trying to be.) I also make sure to coat my scalp and massage the conditioner in just like I would with shampoo.

Comparing shampoo to conditioning methods, I use much less shampoo than conditioner when I do shampoo which is maybe once every two weeks or so now, with co-washing every 2-4 days or so. This is because I have started only lathering my scalp unless I'm clarifying- it keeps tangles down and lets me use less conditioner to detangle. I clarify whenever I feel like I need it now; for the longest time I did it on a schedule of every 1.5-2 months.

I'm still here. Still CG!

I think my hair has finally adjusted to the cowashing. I haven't had any flat lifeless hair since the beginning really. It's working out really well. Now when I am in the shower there is hardly ANY hair in the DRAIN!!!!!! YAY! That's the whole reason I started this journey. Too much hair in the drain was freaking me out.

I've also calmed the heck down on buying stuff.

I used an enitre bottle of VO5's Kiwi Lime condish. I really like that stuff for cowashing. I will definitely buy it again. I might need to buy 2 bottles at a time tho 'cuz I use a lot of it. I like the smell of it too.

Currently cowashing with Sauve Naturals Coconut stuff. It works, but I don't like the smell so much.

When that runs out I still have a huge bottle of Tressemee Naturals condish to use up. I am not sure if I can use that for a cowash because it seems a bit heavier. We shall see.

The Loreal EverCurl cleansing conditioner - I'm not as excited about it anymore. I don't really care for it. It's too expensive and it's not that great. I think it was good when I was transitioning to CG tho.

I was in love with the FSG I made, but I kept forgeting to put it back in the refrigerator. For a time I went back to use the pink hair gel from Walmart. I forget what it's called at the moment. It was just o.k. I hate crunchy hair and really missed my FSG.

I made some more FSG last week and I'm happy to be done with crunchy hair, but I left it out today. I put it back in the fridge as soon as I remembered. It was out for about 3 hours. I'm pretty sure it's bad, but I will check it tomorrow. I need to figure out preservatives for it for those occassions where I forget. Or something...

So that's that.
