Official...What's my hair type "3" Thread!-straws_email.jpg... 3C Hair Type

I wanted to post this thread to clarify 3A, 3B, and 3C hair. This is not an original thread, I saw it first under the "4" section for their hair type and thought it would be nice to have it here for us as well.

I see many who are 3A, saying they are 3B; and 3Bs being told they are 3Cs. Also, some attributes of 3B hair types described on this site does not apply and are true of 3C hair types.

Type 3 hair, [generally]: Type 3 curlies can use a variety of styling products to achieve curl formation and definition.

Type 3 hair has a lot of body and is easily styled in its natural state, or it can be easily straightened with a blow-dryer into a smoother style. Healthy Type 3 hair is shiny, with soft, smooth curls and strong elasticity. The curls are well defined and springy, [from Curly Nikki].

Type 3a curls
show a definite loopy "S" pattern. Curls are well-defined and springy. Curls are naturally big, loose and often very shiny. 3a curls' circumference are sidewalk-chalk size. Generally, this hair type can be easily straightened. Type 3a hair is very much affected by the climate.

Type 3b curls have well-defined, springy, copious curls that range from bouncy ringlets to tight corkscrews. 3b curls' circumference are Sharpie size. Type 3b hair can be straightened, but it's definitely a chore. Type 3b hair generally isn't particularly shiny and its texture can be quite coarse. Gels and creams work best to reduce frizz and add definition.

Type 3b hair, which has a medium amount of curl to tight corkscrews. It’s not unusual to see a mixture of these types existing on the same head. Curly hair usually consists of a combination of textures, with the crown being the curliest part, [from Curly Nikki].

Type 3c curls has voluminous, tight curls in corkscrews, approximately the circumference of a pencil or straw. The curls can be either kinky, or very tightly curled, with lots and lots of strands densely packed together. Getting this type of hair to blow dry straight is more challenging than for 3a or 3b, but it usually can be done. The very tight curls are usually fine in texture.

Type 3c hair, this type of hair can be described as tight curls in corkscrews. The curls can be either kinky, or very tightly curled, with a lot of strands densely packed together.

Some say hair types don't matter, some say it does because it lets you know what products to use. it did help me in getting a general idea of where to start in my hair care journey; however I choose my products from those with 2c to 3a curl types. This had nothing to do with my "curl type" but because of my hair type; [texture: porosity, density, width, and length], which has no number. I think that matters more than anything.

I look at some pictures of different celebrities who are supposed to fit in certain types and they don't appear to fit into that particular curl type at all.

Also, I have had Jewish American friends who have hair in various stages of the 4 hair curls, and African American friends in various stages of the 2 hair curls so it has nothing to do with nationality.

My hair is a 3B, however it straightens very easily, [which is not true to the 3b hair type on this site]. In fact I can put my hair in a pineapple and tie it with a silk scarf for the night and when I wake up it is almost a 2b type, [I have to spritz it to get my curls back]. My curls are "sharpie" circumference however they get looser as my hair gets longer, [and my silver hair is wavy].

One thing I do know is that I LOVE my hair and I am SO glad I went natural.

Blessings!!!

I get so confused on hair type. I just say im mainly 3b/3c. I have curls the circumference of Sharpies....but at my nape i have 3c/4a mixed (they're bigger than 4a but smaller than 3c...at one point i called them 3d!..lol). The front curls are super wavy like crinkly fries...but i still call them 3b.

So if im ever asked my hair type i just say type 3.

I'm fairly certain I'm a 3B, but I get confused. My hair is various types and sizes I think. So maybe 3B/3C? Or 3B/3A? See, I'm confused. =)

Some parts of this I agree on, but some I don't. I'd classify my hair as 3A and it is generally shiny, but only some curls are big and loose, whereas others are small and tight. Also, no way is my hair is straightened easily :P haha.

I think I have a combo of 2C / 3A / 3B textures on my head. Also, when I was younger, pre damaging my hair to oblivion, my curls were predominantly 3B. So maybe my roots are 3B and my looser curls are from damage?

Ahhh who knows!? This is all really interesting nonetheless! It's fascinating to see what seems to be generally true for each hair type.
3A with some 3B thrown in. Medium porosity. Medium Thickness. High density.

Well initially I thought I was a 3b but now I believe I have some 3c in my head (in the back/middle of my head and at the nape it tends to be more kinky/corkscrewy). I also think a very small amount of the strands in the front of my head might be 3a just because they don't curly as tight as the rest of my head does, they are more stretched out it seems.

I'm mostly 3a, but I have everything from 2c near the crown to 3b ringlets in the under layers and framing my face. But my hair isn't easy to straighten and isn't affected by the weather. Lady_Creole, when I saw your pictures, I thought you were a 3c.
I guess I don't understand the difference between 3a and 2c. Sometimes they seem really similar. I also don't really like the test on NC. The first question it asks you is if your hair is wavy or curly. Well I don't really know, that's why I'm taking this test . . ..

I was wondering what hair type sunkissalba fell into. She was the first person I found when I was researching natural hair care and her curls were much looser-maybe 2c or 3a, [I knew her curls were not like mine however her hair type was, [softness-texture], so I used her method.

Then someone told me about mahoganycurls and I combined some of her techniques with what I was already doing, [she refuses to be "curl typed".

Once I found my "niche" I stopped watching everyone...just doing my own thing.

Several weeks ago I looked everyone up again and was surprised how sunkissalba's curls had changed, still beautiful, just different. i thought she had curled them manually.

I can't figure out if my hair is 3a/3b might even be 3c.
It seems to get looser or I get more curls the further into the week I go after washing.

I believe I am a 3c. Any tips for oil treatments?
