Default What's Your 3B Routine?

Hello all!

I looked for this thread, but didn't see it started anywhere, so I thought I'd start it!

I was just wondering what your current routine is? Do you do a wash and go, or do you typically only do it once/twice a week and have 2nd day, 3rd day, etc. hair?

I'm just curious to see what everyone does!

I am a wash and go type of gal and currently wash in the shower daily (either with a conditioner or shampoo twice a week), then I typically wrap my hair in my turbie twist and get dressed. Then, I'll spray my hair with water and apply my products and let it air dry.

I'm trying new methods and today I applied my products to my soaking wet hair, applied more than normal, and scrunched with my turbie to dry it a little. My curls are more defined but are flatter than normal. It is a never ending process for me.

Hey Danigirl , I feel like we haven't chatted much lately (I've been busy so I get on when I can).

Well as of lately (because it changes by the week) I have gone back to using SM products. I wash about once a week with the moisture retention shampoo but I co-wash daily using the restorative conditioner (finger detangle), use the curl and style milk as my LI and style with the curl enhancing smoothie. I apply most of my products while in the shower on soaking wet hair. I'm currently looking for a good DT, thinking about doing an overnight organic coconut oil DT to see how that helps with the frizz in my scalp.

I'm begining to think that gel is my only option to battle this frizz and I'll just have to SOTC, but I'm going to try a few other things before going back down that road.

Oh and of course I diffuse. However, I have been airdrying for about 30 minutes to an hour before diffusing (depending on how much time I have to spare).

Condition wash, add gel to soaking wet hair, scrunch, put in terry turban towel while I put my face on, take out of towel, put claw clips on top of head for lift, air dry for 20 min or so, take out clips, diffuse dry for 3-4 minutes, scrunch.
I don't get 2nd day hair so on days I don't wet my hair I just put it up in a pony.
I do a deep treatment and vinegar rinse about once a month.
I trim/cut my own hair and give it a trim every couple months.

My holy grail products are Suave Coconut Conditioner, LA Looks Sport Gel, Turbie Twist terry turban towels, and my Conair/Windmere pancake diffusers. I've used this routine and these products for many years. I try other things for fun but always come back to these.

Hey SortaRican! Good to hear from you.

Again, I feel like we're kindred hair spirits. Lol. My process changes weekly as well, and I still haven't found one that I absolutely loved yet. Do you notice a big difference when you apply your products to soaking wet hair rather than damp? I've tried the soaking wet hair thing, but my hair is a lot flatter. I don't have time to diffuse after air drying in the morning, so I think that may be the problem for me. I've been wanting to try the DT with the coconut oil as well. I just have to pick some up. I was also watching SunKissAlba on YouTube and she uses Pure Aloe Vera. I was thinking about using that since I have similar hair to hers. It might be the key!

I haven't used gel in a while, but sometimes I have to SOTC with the SMCES if I put too much in.

Thanks for sharing!

I couldn't live without my Turbie Twist! It really is a life saver. I've noticed that if I put my product in my hair and then put it up in that, my curls look great, but a little flat. The diffuser frizzes my hair out unless I use it when my hair is at least 50% dry, but I never have time in the morning (I'm not a morning person). I may have to try getting up earlier to do this (weekends are my trial and error days). Thanks for sharing your routine! I might have to try a variation of it to see if it works for me. I really need to start using clips, that's for sure! =)

I have noticied a difference in my curls when I apply my product to soaking wet hair. I get more of the clumping that I like so my curls are more defined. I guess my hair does seem flatter than when I apply my product to damp hair but I think that's because I didn't have the thick defined curls from the clumping. I usually air dry while I'm putting on my make up and then take a diffuser to my hair for about 5 mins (trying to minimize the time to avoid any heat damage), just enough to give me some decent volume.

My fiance works this Saturday so I should have time early in the day to try the coconut oil DT. I'm planning on putting it in first thing when I wake up and letting it sit while I do house cleaning/laundry...I'll let you know how it works out for me. I have some at home but it's been about a month or two since I used it...I meant to check before leaving the house to make sure it was still good (I'm sure it is though), thanks for reminding me.

Let me know how it works! I have to go get some. I have been meaning to, but have been busy lately. Maybe tonight I can run to the store. I do like the clumping when I put my products on my soaking wet hair. I just don't like the flatness. I'll have to work on it! I might just have to get up earlier. Lol.

I am currently experimenting with finger coiling hoping this will allow me to get 2nd day hair. I did all the steps below except I used the soft portable dryer that you attach to your blow dryer. This dried my hair without frizziness. My curls were flat, but I used a pick to fluff out after I separated the finger coils. So far, the best hair day in a while due to color damage. (There is a thread on general topics about this dryer)

What has worked for me:
co-wash everyday
apply Nourish, KCNT, or Suave Almond & Shea conditioner to soaking wet hair
apply LALSG or LALNG
wet plop overnight
diffuse just a little in the a.m.
SOTC after a few hours

I've been lurking for a while, and just got to posting. Love reading all of your routines.

My hair is 3B, and used to dry out very easily. I wash with a sulfate-free shampoo once a week and DT. When I don't use the sulfate free shampoo, I condition with One-n-Only Argan Oil and Baking soda.

On Cleansing Days:
Ouidad Cleansing Oil or L'Oreal Evercurl Sulfate Free Shampoo
Ouidad Curl Quencher Moisturizing Conditioner
DT: Curl Junkie Deep Fix or EverSleek Deep Conditioner 1x per week.
Ouidad 12 Minute Deep Treatment (1-2 x a month)

Styling ( on days where it is above freezing):
Kinky-Curly Knot Today -- I wear my hair down for 2-3 days after that, and on the fourth day I do a side bun. I spritz cold water every morning and do not apply any more product.

Styling (on days where it is below freezing):
Kinky-Curly Knot Today
Coconut Oil
Curls Creme Brulee -I also get 2-3 days of being able to wear my hair down, but because of the amount of product and the weather, it dries out and there is product build-up. I do a side pony tail or bun on the 3rd or 4th day and a french braid on the 4th or 5th.

I used to have to wash my hair every other day for it to seem moisturized, but this routine seems to be working pretty well for me, and my hair has never looked healthier. I am modified CG.

I'm still working out exact routine.
I use these:
- Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie
- Shea Moisture Curl & style milk
- Shea Moisture Curling souffle
- Jane Carter Rivitalizing leave in
- Kinky Curly Knot Today
- Grapeseed Oil

The Mixed Chicks I found that dried my hair so I've stopped using it for the time being think it hates the wheat protein.

Wash day I use whichever sulfate free shampoo I have & Loreal Hair Expertise Ever Riche Mask deep conditioner

I used to put the shea moisture smoothie on after washing while my hair is dripping wet , after a while I'd put on the styling milk and the souffle then grapeseed oil. I found the smoothie takes way too long to dry.

I tried putting on the Jane Carter Leave in and the smoothie after along with the styling milk an souffle an grapeseed oil that worked so much better an dried quicker.

Generally my daily routine is just the styling milk & souffle I'm still figuring out what to put on top either the oil or jane carter leave in. I've started experimenting putting it on before the styling milk & souffle. I use the Kinky Curly Knot Today when my hairs feeling dry or needs a quick boost (still figuring out how best to use it but my hair likes it)

I'm not a 100% on the whole routine yet .

Well im a 3b/c and dont have 2nd day hair :/ , but I ...wake up
Spray hair with water (til its 50% wet)
I do the LOC method so I use...
Shea Moisture-Extra Moisture Detangler (its like a moisturizing kinky curly knot today)
Olive Oil/or jojoba (I only use oil twice a week on ends or my frizzy halo)
SheaMoisture-Curl&Style Milk (a quarter size)
Lastly I press my ends with my turbie twist, and pat the rest of my hair with it to prevent frizz.
I usually wash once a week with a shampoo (in the winter)
BUT this is just my winter/fall routine because my hair gets suuupper dry (I live in Washington, D.C. area), I have no clue what I plan on doing in the spring/summer though lol, im working on it.. probably light weight products.

In the summer, you want to use lighter products that won't build up on the hair.

I recommend the ebook Live Curly Live Free by Tiffany Anderson for information which will help you understand how dew points interact with your hair properties, and sort out ingredients which will work for or against you.

Just curious, how do you apply your oil? I have been battling frizz since going CG and halo frizz is something I can't seem to overome. I have found some things to help reduce it but it still drives me insane. Do you use it on your hair while it is still wet/damp? Are you able to apply it without disturbing your curl pattern? I find that when I try to apply a product to my roots in order to reduce frizz I have to almost finger comb it through to get those frizzy hairs to lay down properly which begins to separate the rest of my curls and cause more frizz.

You ladies mentioned a turbie twist...well I was at Walmart just browsing their hair products (I never leave a store without checking out this aisle! lol) and don't you know the turbie twist was just hanging out waiting for me to find it. I used it this morning and I think I'm in love! I only left it on for about 10 mins (didn't want to do it too long since I was headed to work and wasn't sure how it would come out). I was worried that it would disturb my curl pattern but my curls were still defined and there was very little frizz at the roots, compared to the frizz that I usually experience. I did diffuse a little just to get some more volume.

I think next time I will leave it on a little longer just to see the results.

So I just wanted to tell you ladies thanks!

This might be a stupid question but is using the turbie considered plopping?? How long do you usually leave yours on?

I think it is in a way, or at least I think so. I only leave mine on for about 5-10 minutes. As long as it takes me to get dressed usually. But, I completely mess up the clumps (plopping doesn't work for me, or maybe I'm doing it wrong). So, I mainly just use it for it's drying power. Lol.

Although, I did put some LI in and then put the Turbie on and my curls were pretty awesome, but frizzy. Maybe if I put all of my products in and then put it on, it would help.
