Curl Activator do they really work??

Are curl activators better than normal gels? I am trying to find something to combat frizz and define my curls.. I am suffering from a lot of heat damage but I am combating that with some styles forcing me to leave my hair alone.. But I notice that my curls come out with water or gel.. I have tried many cremes to know this... and cremes don't work.. What can I use because water dries out my hair.. if I let it air dry. I have noticed that my hair is beautiful when it is wet.. but when it dries.. it lools and feels awful.. What do I do?
The curl activator that i have works a little, but i don`t use it anymore,i think gels work better it makes the curls more defined, what i`m going to do now is wash my hair every week or so because i don`t know if washing my hair too much is drying it out,i want to follow some Amel Laurrieux hair tips. I want to do hot oil treatments every week or every 2 weeks,it helps make the curls more more defined, this helps to show all my curls ,its better than putting a hair product in my hair to get curls, when i do that some curls might not appear. Its good that your doing protective styles that is what i`m doing too,i want to do a wash and go 1 a week, it would be better that way because i think my hair would be in better condition if i don`t try to do it everyday and my curls should look better.Hope you get better advices.

3c... and clueless pj
I use to have the same issues with my hair (soft when wet, but dries hard). But, since I've been doing weekly deep treatments my hair is MUCH softer. I use to have to add a lot of product after conditioner washing, but now all I add is leave-in (MHC Jamaica Island). This is by far the best product I've purchased since being natural. It's actually sold as a regular conditioner, but after applying it to my hair I realized how light-weight it is and decided to use it as a leave-in. Anyway, weekly deep treatments are soo important. I just add a little coconut oil and olive oil to a creamy conditioner (Blended Beauty's Curl Quenching Conditioner) and sit under the dryer for 30 minutes. The results are phenomenal!! :P I've been doing this consistently for about 2 months and can already see a difference. I hope this helps you!

Oh BTW, I don't shampoo my hair anymore... I found out that my hair is too dry afterwards. Instead, I've discovered Blended Beauty's Volcanic Clean Mask. It's a clay treatment that rids the hair of dirt. You apply the paste-like clay to your hair and let it air dry (usually 20-30mins), then rinse. This also adds to the softness of my hair... mucho moisture! I do this before doing a deep treatment.

Good luck!
4a/4b... at this point, Henna has to be my friend, cause I've tried EVERYTHING else!!

Henna, Afro Detangler, KBB hair cream, Vitamin E oil, Qhemet AOHC, AND no more letting my hair dry curly... darn knots are driving me crazy!!

Do you mean cul activators or curl activator gels? They aren't the same thing. Yes, curl activator gels can really hydrate your hair and define the curl because they are heavy in glycerine. They tend to be CG friendly, too. The only objection I can think of is that most contain carbomers.

I don't know if curl activators work that well on natural hair.

I'm a conditioning evangelist because it's done so much good for my hair. I use a rinse-out conditioner and a leave-in and do frequent deep treatments. I condition-wash every 2-3 days, followed by a rinse-out moisturizing conditioner and a leave-in. I use mild non-sulfate shampoo every 1 to 2 weeks. When my hair is drier or needs more moisture (winter), I use styling cremes, sometimes overlaid with gel. In the warmer weather or when my hair is in better shape, I use a leave-in conditioner underneath a moisturizing gel. The leave-in helps diminish the "crunch".

If a gel dries crunchy, try "unscrunching" by gently pulling all your hair through your hands like your making a ponytail. I "unscrunch" this way with a bit of Devacurl Set it Free and Blended Cutie Soft Curls & Swirls used like a pomade.

Curl activators seem to add moisture because most have a high glycerin content. Glycerin is a humectant (attracts water). But if your hair doesn't have a good moisture content it won't help. Also I found with activators my hair was limp and stringy, and had no body or volume (like a Jheri curl) They also didn't feel very good in my hair.

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.
Hear that crash? It's me falling off the CG wagon.
i was gonna use a curl activator and i found that Kinky curly works well, granted i had to learn how to use it properly. i notice as little of that stuff goes a very long way..i also learned the more you use kinky curly, the more defined curls you get with it...but with me, i must wash it with that kinky curly shampoo every 3 or 4 days or the build up is terrible in my hair...
I recently tried long aid curl activator gel with the ecostyler clear gel, and I had really nice results(pictures). My hair felt soft and hydrated, but my curls were still defined.
