Cool new thing
Wow--I think this will be awesome! Love the way this is. :D
What is working for me: (FYI--no chemical analysis please unless specifically requested--thanks! I prefer ignorance)
Chagrin Valley Shampoo Bars
Aubreys Organics Conditioners (White Camelia and Rose Marqueta)
Jessicurl Too Shea Conditioner
Jessicurl Deep Treatment
OJON Restorative Treatment
OJON SHine Serum
OJON Styling Creme (small amts.)
Aura Hypoallergenic Gel (for gel days)
Generic PM the Cream
Jessicurl Gelebration Spray
Deva One weighs me down--not liking it any more. DH likes it though!
I love my conditioners for sure!
I hope this is where I should be ... I'm like a cross between a 2C and 3A I think, but there's no category for me!
Here's what I'm using these days:
Beauty Without Cruelty Moisture Plus Condish
Once a week or so I'll poo with BWC MP Shampoo
Once a month or so I'll poo with Aveda Detoxifier
I'm back to my HG stylers (maybe they work better in summer, or maybe I used them less in winter because I was having build up from CG?) -
KMS Curl Up Control Créme
Giovanni Vitapro Fusion (great curl refresher)
Kenra Platinum Grooming Pomade (nothing works better for me as a finisher!)
Wet (whether it's poo and condish, no-poo and condish, or just wet and condish - but always a scalp massage) hair and do a medium rinse of condish (warm, then cool - don't leave too much in).
Plop for a bit to remove most of the moisture.
Finger-comb/smooth in a well emulsified tiny dab of creme into damp hair (distributing well), then scrunch.
Zig-zag part, root clip, diffuse on high/cool air (scrunching periodically).
Finish with pomade.
Use Vitapro to refresh for second day hair.
I'm not a real 3a. I'm a 3b in disguise. My hair is solid 3b when short but it stretches out to 3a when long. I don't want to post in two places so I'm picking 3a for the purpose of fitting in somewhere. :sniffle: :D
This is my current routine, copied from my hair journal at LHC. It looks long written down but it isn't actually very time consuming at all. From the time I step into the shower to the time I'm totally done with my hair, it's about 20-30 minutes.
I'm washing my scalp at least three times a week but up to seven times a week if I feel like it. When I scalp wash, this is what I do:
- Step in the shower and rinse out the whole length.
- Coat everything below the nape with a cheap conditioner. I'm using Trader Joe's Refresh, which only costs $2.
- Wash the scalp with Elucence Moisture Benefits shampoo (Mastey Traite also works for me).
- Rinse it all out.
- Condition from the nape down with Elucence Moisture Balance or Jessicurl Too Shea conditioner.
- Detangle with my Creative C9 comb while conditioner is in the hair.
- Lightly smooth hands over the top of the head before rinsing conditioner off them. This conditions the head hair without weighing it down.
- Leave conditioner in for at least a minute while doing other stuff in the shower.
- Rinse it all out.
- Rinse again in cold water.
- Turn off the water and gently scrunch excess water out of the ends.
- Apply leave-in (either Beauty Without Cruelty's old formula or CurlyBrunette's Shea It Ain't So) with fingers and/or detangling comb.
- Scrunch to encourage better curl formation. If enough leave-in has been used, there'll be a satisfying "sploosh" sound.
- Put hair in microfiber dog towel using these instructions.
- Leave hair in the towel while drying off, getting dressed, etc. Anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes.
- Take hair out of the towel. Bend at the waist so hair hangs down and fluff up the scalp hair at the roots. This stops hair from being plastered down to the head later.
- Mist with water if necessary (sometimes my hair is over-dry from the towel) and apply styling product/s* of choice.
- Scrunch and diffuse on low for anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes.
- If it's night, pillow plop over satin-covered pillows. If it's morning, just go. We're done. I can put it partially back with barrettes but not in a bun at this point because my hair is not going to be 100% dry. If I bun damp hair, I get dreads.
*Current products in my rotation: AG re:coil, Boots Curling Cream, Ouidad Tress F/X, KMS Curl Up Control Creme. (I also like Jessicurl Rockin' Ringlets but I'm out of it at the moment. I also have Jessicurl Confident Coils but I don't ever use it without Rockin' Ringlets.)
Variations in the Routine:
- If my scalp is feeling particularly gunky, I might massage it with jojoba oil before washing it.
- If my scalp is feeling particularly dry, I might do a pre-wash massage with aloe vera gel.
Deep Conditioning Treatments:
-Only when I feel like I need one. I could do them weekly, monthly or every few months. It just depends on how my hair feels.
-Weekly or monthly or whatever my hair feels like it needs. If the ends are tangling like crazy, it's probably time to clarify. My clarifying 'poos of choice are Elucence Clarifying, Ouidad Clear & Gentle and Ouidad Water Works.
OMG! I don't know how I posted as a guest. I didn't realize that was possible. I guess I forgot to log in. Um, the previous post is mine. I was going to edit to fix the link to the towel wrapping instructions since it didn't copy over. That's when I realized my mistake. Sorry! Here's the towel wrapping link.
I really like the idea of condensing it down by hair type. This is my routine, sounds similar to you guys.
Wash hair and apply Aussie moist conditioner, but don't wash all of it out
scrunch out a bit of water then apply Aussie gel + water
If I have plenty of time, let hair air dry
If not a lot of time, diffuse for 5 minutes and air dry the rest
Thank you guys for the product recommendations, I have been thinking about trying RR and CCSS.
Well, I am definitely a 3a, and lately (when my hair has gotten a bit longer) I have realized I have some 3b in the neck, but mostly I am a 3a.
It will be really interesting to see if these "hair type forum" will work. I hope so.
I have gone back and forth between CG and modified CG. A while I tried to find a sulfate shampoo that I could use but had to give that up when every single one I tried dried my scalp and hair out pretty bad. Mostly my hair. My scalp isn't as dry as most curly heads.
I can't do "full" CG. I get buildup and last time I tried it my scalp got zits from the conditioner clogging up the pores. No good. So now I use a cocamidopropyl betaine cleanser a couple of times a week and I have actually gone back to using Creme of nature again, even if I decided not to use it for a while.... I alternate between Mastey Traité shampoo (coca. betaine) and Crème of nature now. Every other day and every other time.
I use Aveda Detoxifier once a month to remove buildup from what nots and minerals. Then I do a deep treatment after that. I love Jessicurls Weekly Deep Treatment. I have used it since the end of last summer and it works great every time.
I have recently started leaving in lots more of my HG Elucence MB conditioner and my hair LOVES that. I also mix it with Aveda Elixir leave-on (so I use both at the same time, but Elucence only on the ends). This is a great working leave in mix for me. I get lots of curl and moisture from it. I use Angell or B&A Gel. lately I have used Angell mostly, but I love both of these stylers. They are my HG's too I think.
I always air dry my hair. Get too much frizz if I don't and I am afraid of drying my hair if I use the diffuser. :P
I haven't tried plopping so far but I am planning to. I can't ever get 2nd day hair and the pineapple doesn't work on me.
This place and the CG book have given me a totally "new" hair. I can't express enough gratitude. I also love how nice most people are on this board. I have been members at other boards and I have never experienced such a nice atmosphere like here.
:P Argh!! That post was mine (above). I have never been able to post as a guest either. I must have gotten logged out while I wrote and then it posted as "guest" instead.
You guest aliases are cracking me up!
Hi Mayim :D and Rain :D and Kurlee :D
My routine: 2xper week use Chagrin Shampoo bar (lately loving Herb Garden). Rinse. Apply conditioner du jour (Aubreys White Camelia lately). Rinse. Towel dry with Aquis towel. Scrunching out. Apply RR 1 - 2 palmfuls. Use either CCSS (1/2 palmful with RR mixed in) or another styler. Always use OJON Shine Serum--1 -2 pumps of it raked and scrunched in or the OJON Styling Creme. Then I small smidge of Abba Weightless (tan bottle) on top. Awesome hair with any of these. Staples are the OJON products for styling and the Abba and RR and the Chagrin Shampoo bar and the AUbreys--duh...guess everything I listed is a staple
I diffuse a bit to get the drips out. Then put up in a jaw clip and air dry til lunch. Then down. I always get 2nd day and 3rd day hair lately. :D
i'm on here too!!!
i'm trying out some new stuff on my routine, but this is what's been working lately:
wash-Creme of Nature shampoo or elucence conditioner
clarify- Elucence clarifying shampoo once a month
conditioner-Elucence MB conditioner
leave in- Aveda elixir, with a SPOT of elucence mixed in for good measure! :D
styling- B&A, but i have samples of angell, abba weightless, etc on it's way now!
my big thing is putting the products on wet hair, i plop for 15 mins, then i dry for 5 mins using the pixiecurl method. i don't do it until it's DRY, but it helps get some of the weight from the water out of my hair. then i just don't touch it until i'm at work (about 1 hour in the car with the vents aimed at my head) then i scrunch. been working rather well!
i'm interested in trying honey though...
so i think i might do a new thread!...since we have a whole section to ourselves!
hey kurlee - even though your posted as "guest" i knew it was you in the first sentence!
i belong here too! although, like mayim, i have some 2C also. i'm pretty much CG/modified..... here's my current routine:
-wash with devacurl no poo or jessicurl HCC about once a week, other days just rinse and massage scalp
-condition with devacurl one condition or devared sacred love one condition
-quick rinse upside down, leaving almost all conditioner in
-scrunch in gel: either angell (use lots!!!!), B&A, RR+B&A, or nexxus POTAER
-plop in microfiber towel for 45-60 minutes
-remove towel, smooth a little more of gel du jour over canopy, and air dry
every so often (not quite once a week) i'll DT with a mixture of condish, honey, aloe vera gel sometimes, shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil. i often use shea butter or coconut oil on my ends at night too.
i'm in a constant battle between one condition and elucence MB conditioner which i also love.... i was a faithful devacurl user but after the "one condition 'cone crisis" after lorraine massey's january interview, i convinced myself that my hair felt producty with one condition. so i got elucence and alternated, ran out of one condish, and used elucence exclusively. THEN i decided i missed one condish, got a liter, sold the rest of my elucence and now i'm thinking it feels producty again. what is WRONG with me!!!!??!?!?!?
Every body knows the monkey..
Oops! I just created a post very similar to this...
Well, my hair is inbetween a 2b/3a- it changes sooo much.. The weather makes a very big difference: humidity makes my hair superrrrrrr curly, and dry air makes it wavier at the top, and curly underneath/on the ends. If you want a visual, I have pics at the WWW link ;-)
My hair is thin/fine, but a normal amount of it. From going blonde for all these years, it's quite damaged, so I've been trying to bring it to health. I just recently (like 2 weeks ago...) began going darker, to attempt to have super healthy and shiny and long curls. We'll see !
Recently I've been washing 2-3 times per week, more or less depending on how my hair 'feels'. I usually do the CWC thing, where I do a preliminary conditioning with a cheap conditioner (like Suave Milk and Honey, V05 Nourishing Oasis, or I'll use something detangling like Aquage Detangling SOlution) and then apply the shampoo (usually L'oreal Nature Therepy, TIGI Dumb Blonde, Aura Hypoallergenic, BIolage Ultra Hydrating.. I don't shampoo a lot so I have not found my HG shampoo..). After sudsing up w/ the shampoo/conditioner, I then rinse and apply a heavier conditioner because I loveee moisture on my hair and I loveee weight to weigh down my curls and make them more wavy. EX's of these HG conditioners are Biolage Ultra Hydrating, Aquage Healing, Feria Conditioner.. I have so many more I "use" but these are my tried and true products. I'm trying to use up all my 'old' products, so I can start w/ a clean slate! I do deep treatments about 1-2 times per week, usually w/ Neutrogena Triple Moisture Masque, Biolage UH, Loreal Nature's Therepy Mega Moisture Nurtuing Creme, and Redken Allsoft Heavy Treatment.
For styling, I always start off w/ a leave in , which is usually either Redken Anti-snap or Sebastian Potion 9. My fav. combo is Aura Hypoallergenic Gel w. Abba Weightless.. FABULOUS for humidity! I also use Herbal Essences Mousse. I blowdry my hair usually after it's about 80% dry and try to stretch it out a tad bit (I don't diffuse, different from everyone else here, because it makes my hair "too" curly and I prefer waves) Then I'll add some finisher, like Aveda Light elements smoothing fluid, Finishing Solution, or another silicone serem for shine.. Then I'll spray w/ someting like Aveda Volumizing Tonic or a hair spray to set the style.
Well, that's my hair. Sorry it's a bit jumpy- I'm getting kindof tired :? ...
Hi, this is a great idea, I normaly plough through loads of threads thinking 'that product/idea sounds good' only to realise that it's someone with completly different hair!
Anyway have decided to go with the 3a even though I do have quite a bit of 2c as well, my hair is definitely falling in ringlets at the ends as it gets longer.
Looking at all your pictures (& I really will find out how to post my own someday!) my hair is very similar to yours Blondie & to yours Curlee.
Lovely hair by the way
Thanks to you other curlies my hair is really looking quite good most of the time. :D
Btw, I'm just kind of browsing through all the type threads because I feel like the little kid who didn't get picked for kickball or dodgeball in gradeschool. :P I have no idea what my hair type is anymore, so I'm checking out all the 2's and 3a.
I have a feeling this 3a forum will be a nice and cozy little place. :D With all of my favorite curlies!
hi, i just found this website and am amazed to see that soo many women have curly woes just like me. my best friend is getting married in 2 weeks and i have been putting off getting a haircut for as long as possible seeing as NO stylist has EVER cut my hair well for my curls. if i want to flatten it out its fine but not for my curls. i have 3a type hair and its fine. i live i vancouver, BC, canada and there are no salons which offer exclusive cuts for curls (i am soo jelous they have them in the states!) and was wondering what i should tell my stylist --who cuts my hair then straightens it---- when i go for my cut. i highly doubt she knows anything about the deva cut, or the ouldad slicing and carving technique. any sugesstions as to what i should ask for. my hair is mid back, fine, and type 3a. thanks
Hi guys! Joining you as another 2C/3A!
My routine is this:
I shampoo daily, although I've been trying to use a sulfate free shampoo. I say "try" b/c I'd love to use up everything I have right now! I'm also using any 1 of my 7 conditioners......so I can go out and buy new ones! Okay, so after I shampoo and condition, I rinse it all out, and then flip my head over upside down, and comb w/ a wide tooth comb. Then I scrunch some curl back in and shake it out a little and scrunch it up into a bun-type-thing, and secure it w/ a claw clip. I stay like that for the rest of my shower, and about 15-20 minutes after I'm out and getting ready. I blot it w/ a towel when it starts dripping. Then I take it down, and shake it out, and put in gel. I've been using Aloe Vera, the gel-liquid edible kind. I'm loving that and Dove anti frizz cream. I air dry when it's really warm, but otherwise I diffuse. When I'm all dry I smooth on the Dove cream, and scrunch in more curls.
Once I run out of my shampoos and conditioners, I'll be on the hunt for new products!
