Default Paves "Flawless in the Spotlight" Shine Serum

I'm trying out Paves' shine serum right now. I was thinking of picking up the light version of J. Freida's frizz serum, but I wanted something that didn't rely so much on 'cones to get the desired effect. The label had lots of nice things to say (naturally) about what this is supposed to do for my fine 3B curls, plus it has some ingredients that should help with curl formation:

* A low molecular-weight shine complex to smooth and seal the cuticle, creating vibrant shine and protecting from over-styling and over-processing. (I have color treated hair)
* A revitalizing complex of Burdock and Ginseng Root extracts to help stimulate hair growth.
* Jojoba and Sweet Almond Oil provides non-greasy quick penetrating moisture to hair.
* Polynesian Tamanu Oil helps increase hair elasticity.
* Sunscreen added to protect hair from environment.
* Scented with nourishing essential oils, no damaging synthetic fragrances.

Plus, you can use a very small amount on dry hair as a finishing touch. All this for only $5.99 - and I liked that its cruelty-free and my purchase supports an outstanding charity (Operation Smile) .

The results so far:
Day One - I couldn't wait, so I put a very small amount on my completely dry hair to see if it would help with some frizzing. It helped a little, but nothing amazing.

Day Two - I put it under HE Humidity Defying gel. There was less frizzing, but still more than I liked.

Day Three - Last night I decided to wash & condition my hair and air dry it with nothing but the shine serum on it. My hair was utterly soft, and not oily or weighed down. Not much in the way of curl definition, but the volume of my hair wasn't reduced. It smells nice, too.

Day Four (today) - I layered it under some Osis styling products (Twist & Upload). It's not quite 11:00 am, but so far it's looking good. Excellent curl formation and way less frizz that I was seeing with all of my other styling products. This is a good thing in San Diego's misty June Gloom weather!

The Routine: I usually use an Aquis towel to blot/scrunch excess water out of my hair, apply product with scrunching, diffuse on low for about 5 minutes and allow my hair to finish air drying.

Her sig line says that she is using Suave shampoo, so I guess she is not on CG.

Yeah, I know, but in her first paragraph she says:

About the 'cones - if you look at the majority of anti-frizz serums on the market (in the price range I'm willing to pay ) the ingredient list is one 'cone after another with maybe a sunscreen thrown in at the end.

I was looking for something different, and this looked like a good multi-tasking styling aid!

CurlyMel is right! I'm not a CG-er. I tried it (with the book, even!) and it didn't work for me.

Athyn312:

Are you more interested in the frizz control aspect of serums or the shine, or both? Have you ever tried Curl Keeper? I pair it with everything to control frizz. It doesn't have much hold, so if you want more, you would have to pair it with a gel or cream.

CurlyMel - congratulations!!! I hope your pregnancy goes well!

I'm more interested in the frizz control. I'd like to try Curl Keeper, because I've read such wonderful things about it. I was just a little concerned about how much of CK I'd use in a typical month...not that I'm heavy handed with products, but I didn't know how much I'd have to use to get the desired effect. How long is your hair? How long does a bottle (large or small) of CK last?

BTW: this is the best day yet with the Paves! I used Loreal Curl Vive gel over the shine serum. My curls are defined (not chunky, though), not frizzy and not crunchy or stiff! After all these years I may have finally found the combination that works for me!

Another BTW: isn't it nice to finally see some sunshine in San Diego?

Thanks for the warm wishes! I didn't know notice that you lived in San Diego. I don't know where in San Diego County you are, but I did not see any sun today. Saw a little of blue sky yesterday. I hate June Gloom.

My hair is around chin length (you can check out my photos, it is a little longer now, trying to grow it out). I use about 5 nickel-sized puddles of CK. I bought the large bottle, maybe in Jan, and still have half left. But, I only get my hair wet every 3 days, so that definitely cuts down on my use. Some people get their hair wet and reapply products every day.

That's pretty good, even for applying the CK every three days! I'm one of those who have to get my hair wet every day. That 2nd day hair is *so* elusive!

All right - I think you've convinced me! It also helps that you use this product with good results in the same climate that I'm in. That was terrible grammer, but you get the gist...

That will be my next mini-splurge.

Oh - I work in Banker's Hill, next to Balboa Park. It was sunny from about 3:00 - 4:15. June Gloom is the worst, isn't it? Sometimes I think I should just break out a crystal ball to try to predict if I should use a gel or a creme on any given day!

Well, when you get CK, let me know how it goes. People seem to either love it or hate it.

Will do! I was thinking of just getting one of the sample kits. Besides, if it doesn't work out I'm sure I can find someone who would like to play with the remaining products!

I looked at your Fokti album -

Your curls are astounding! They're gorgeous! What a lucky baby - I hope the 'curl' gene gets passed along! :P

Thanks! I am mixed about whether I want the baby to have my curls. On the one hand, I would prefer they not have the hassle and go through the love-hate relationship with their hair. On the other hand, I have lots of tips to pass on! But I don't really have a choice, do I?

Your curls are amazing Curlymel. I just looked at your album again.
Congrats on the baby.
I wonder if curly hair (the gen) is dominant or not...

Kurlee, you got me thinking about the genetics. I found this link http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives...0916.Ge.r.html

It seems complicated, but curly hair tends to be dominant. Probably at least a 50% chance. My hair is fairly curly, but my DH is straight and so is everyone in his family.

I'm a 3a crashing your board, but I wanted to reply to the question about how long CK lasts. I ordered the sample kit, which includes a 4-ounce bottle of CK. I found I don't need to use a whole lot, so it lasts a long time. I ended up getting a liter, which I use to refill the smaller bottle. I've had that liter for ages....I think I must have ordered it back in September, at least, and it's still about 1/3 full.

I use it daily, under any styling product. It's a great substitute for serums.
