To product or not to product...

First of all, this is great to have our own forum. Now down to my post.

I'm doing an experiment on my hair to see if I can get rid of some of the dryness and soften it over time. I'm not using any style products. I wash it with CoN (today just Suave M&H) and then I condition and detangle it into 4 sections. I plait those sections and finish my shower. I rinse out my hair, sqeeze out the excess water, unplait, and apply a little more condish to each section (Suave M&H or CoN condish). I paddle brush the edges into a ponytail and that's it.

I've done this for about a week now and my hair is really pretty. The curls are great and my hair doesn't feel as dry. If I could, I'd like to kick the use of gel and maybe only use cream like styling products. I really think gel dries my hair out.

I know midnite curls said she doesn't use gel anymore and that she styles her hair with conditioner, but I don't think mine would turn out as great as her's.

Has anyone else ever attempted this or does this right now? I'm assuming it's a process to train your hair to behave without the use of gel or mousse, or whatever, and I'm willing to give it some time, but does anyone think I'm just wasting my time?

You are pretty much doing what I'm doing right now, with the exception of the products used and using the paddle brush to put into a ponytail.

In response to going productless, I can if I use a leave in but the curls don't look the same. It also tends to look alittle frizzy, which I don't really mind. But without product(gel), I'm not able to attain 2nd or 3rd day hair. I would basically have to wash or wet my hair everyday to get the curls to look somewhat fresh, and I prefer not to. It's easier for me to use a gel(w/o alcohol, silicones, or mineral oil/petro). I find that as long as I use a good reg. condish and leave in, I don't experience any dryness.
A wonderful mix of coils, curls, corkscrews, and kinks.

Of course, I LOVE GEL as well as other products. In fact, I got second day hair today after using Angell yesterday.. My thoughts on gel are to always apply it to damp hair, dilute it with some water and choose your gel carefully... But you are not the first curly to say you dislike gel. Bottom line: if your routine is working for you, KEEP DOING IT

Here is Anthro's technique of styling hair without products.

That did not work for me when my hair was short but now that my hair is longer I can braid my hair to get looser curls.

I usually just use a leave-in conditioner instead of products. I only use products if I am going to be outside in the humidity.
We're all born mad. Some remain so.

You're doing what I'm doing, too. I haven't used product in weeks, just Elucence with some oil, coffee and cayenne pepper. Curltopia's right, I don't like gel. I use creams sometimes but Elucence is already so creamy I don't need to. I sometimes use them for fun or to get a specific result but my hair is great without them, and much less dry.

Anyway, maybe she went back to not using gel, but I do know that at one point she did have a little bit of trouble.

I wanted to try this to see if it works, but I don't think the summer is the time for me. Maybe in the colder seasons.

HeatherNicole, I love your album! You are so pretty! Your hair looks so beautiful and much healthier since you've joined us. It's so shiny! Plus, it's growing!

i do not know if this helps but i think you can probably stop using gel if you use a heavy conditioner instead of the gel (which is basically what i try to do) or you can try something like a creme -- i bought this stuff by rusk called being smooth -- which i really like

BUT i always wear my hair up so i do not know if this counts

good luck with the no-gel
Awww thank you Ladydancing. You are so nice and that is so flattering. That's why I love this place! Everyone so kind to each other and always building the other person up. How is your husband enjoying being an ordained minister? Your hair looks great too and how are you liking it since you've BCed?

Hannan-- I wear my hair up the majority of the time too. When I want it sleeker I put in olive oil lotion and sometimes AO mandarin jelly. But so far I've just been leaving in CoN or Suave M&H. They seem to be doing all right.

Cehua-- thank you for showing me that Laissez Faire hair I think i'll try that while I'm visiting at home to see if it works out. I think I'll have to use conditioner or oil though unlike her.

hi again,

since you wear your hair up most of the time i think you can definitely get away with no gel. the main thing for me is to put my hair up while it is at least damp and since i do not wash my hair everyday i either wet it with water or i use the frizz ease spray on conditoner or that stuff that they usually dump on curly hair when you go to a salon (i totally do not know why i am drawing a blank i can picture it in my head). it comes in a white plastic bottle with brown or maybe black lettering and it is a treatment but it is very watery. then i just put on something else either a conditioner that is kind of heavy like the coconut mask from kiehl's or i have been using the generic version of potion 9 (from sally's) or the generic version of paul mitchell the cream (also from sally's). lush also has this solid conditioner that i like (i think it is called jungle) but i think that has to do more with the smell and i will rub that on my head too if i think of it, but the main thing is to see what you like you may want to mix conditioner and gel and see how this works for you. i used to do that in the days i still used gel. good luck -- let us know how you make out.

Thanks for the compliment on my hair. I think I need a trim especially in the front, so I should be working on doing that sometime this summer.
I think that I will be trying conditioner (Elucence with oil) as an leave in and see how that works. I have to also experiment with brushing the styling aid too. Keep us posted on your results. bye for now!

The type of product I use is pretty much the same everyday for my face and hair. I really really really like Paul Mitchell and DDF. If you use the serum for 3C hair it's like magic. I also really like the after conditioner and the "ultra clean" gel. I've had so much time to actually experiment on my hair lately and everything I've tried hasn't turned out very well. I stick with the things I like, but everytime I try to change the products I've been using my hair gets dried out and brittle.
I only style my hair with conditioner and cream. I leave in Aveda Sap Moss conditioning detangler cause even though it's not meant as a leave-in, it's light and leaves your hair shiny. Then I use either Aveda be Curly styling cream or Curls Rock cream as my only styler. If I am wearing my hair in a ponytail, then I skip the styler altogether.

I think regular conditioner as a leave-in is a thick 3c's best friend. The key is finding the right one.
HeatherNicole,

I went about a month without any styling aids. I used alot of conditioner and did many braid outs. The problem was my hair was more prone to tangles this way, mainly at the nape of my neck. I liked the really "natural" look I achieved but it was too much work trying to detangle without damaging it. So I went back to gel. I also like the more polished look I get from product. It depends on my mood. I use Nexxus Styling Gel-my staple...I looove this gel!! I've been using it for a while now and no drying out...consistent good hair days. I think I may be the only one who loves this gel!
But it's good to know that I won't be lost without styling aids...say if I were stranded on a deserted island. Now...conditioner is different thing...hopefully the island will have coconuts, aloe vera....
