Getting volume at the roots

Hi 3as!

I am having lots of trouble getting curl and volume at my roots. I feel like everything I try just creates frizz. This never used to be a problem for me but now it's like my hair is always plastered to my head and straight at the roots. My ends have nice curls, so I end up with this uneven, triangular look. What do other 3as do to fix this?

TIA!

Have you tried rinsing your hair upside down? This works for me. I know someone else diffuses her roots right from the shower to remove water weight. Plopping also seems to help me with root volume. HTH
Starting my curly resolution! 3a/3b with some waves thrown in. Haven't been CG in a while. Need product suggestions.
i apply product to wet hair, plop for 15 mins, then diffuse pixiecurl style for about 5-10 mins (just enough to get the water weight out).
i airdry the rest of the way...
when it's dry and i'm scrunching out the crunch upside down, i use my fingers and massage/rub my scalp in a circular motion. seems to help encourage volume and tells those curls to go all the way up!
3A Once again on the quest for BSL healthy curly hair....
Have you tried clips at the roots while drying? Works wonders for me.

I change the way my hair parts pretty often, that gives me lift actually. If I keep it parted in the same spot for a couple of weeks it gets flatter and flatter. Then I put in my leave in and dry my hair with my micro fiber towel upside down, which gives me volume too.

I haven't tried plopping yet, but I will.

Your hair, it's everywhere. Screaming infidelities, taking its wear.
Yeah, that's probably why the zig-zag part helps me with root volume so much - I'm pretty certain it's never exactly the same from one day to the next!

Have you tried a zig-zag part?

Thanks for the replies!

I tried the clipping at the roots thing a few days ago and it didn't make any difference--what is the best way to do it?

Itsjustmeghan, when I try the scalp massage trick, it just seems to create frizz up there. Any suggestions?

ETA if you look at my hair album, you can see a big difference between the first pic (lots of effortless curl at the roots) and my recent pics. I'm not sure what caused that change

That's a trait of my wavy hair. Switching to low poo & one condition helped the most. I also flip my hair upside down & bend at waist for shampoo, condition, applying gel and drying with microfiber towel (CG book says to flip hair over, scrunch top canopy, hold and stand upright, then release to give lift in canopy). Rinsing hair in cold water, in the sink (via ava79) seemed to help also. Pixie curl method also helps.

It was already mentioned, but I tried rinsing upside down the other day and was pleasently surprised to have more volume at my roots. Have you tried this, iris?

Since my curls don't go all the way up on their own, rinsing upside down alone will not give me extra volume.

My fool proof trick:

When I get out of the shower, I flip my head over and rake in product. Then I gather my hair in a scrunching motion til I make a big ball at the top of my head and I secure it w/ a band or clip. I lightly shake it out about 20 minute later, and TRY not to touch it until it finshes drying. Tons of volume at the roots.
My hair always looks like it's getting more wave at the roots when it's wet, but as soon as it dries, it all falls out

Socobo, I think your method might work it I hit it with the dryer while it's secured like that. I'm going to try it!

Just discovered meghan's way by accident. I plopped for 20 min, then pixiecurl diffused until 90% dry (in a hurry for a lunch date). This worked great!

Socobo - this sounds like a *pineapple*, which is what I do with my hair at night (& get great volume in the morning)! My hair is fairly straight at the roots anyway, but I can't stand to have it flat against my head.

One time, after getting highlights, the stylist flat ironed it, & I thought I would DIE of embarrassment. I was like *where did my hair go?*. It looked totally ridiculous on me, esp now that my hair is thinner than it's ever been

Anyway, thanks for the tip! I'm going to try that tomorrow morning

Shampoo: Still use sulfates, but only on roots
Rinse out: Deva One C, JC Too Shea, Original Sprouts Deep Conditioner
Curl Enhancers: KCCC; JC Rocking Ringlets, JC Spiralicious, & Confident Coils
Styler: BRHG (over any and all curl enhancers) - this is the one product that I never change - absolute HG!!

My hair is wavy to the roots, but it likes to lay flat on top of my head. So I do the zig zag part in different places and use the duckbill clips running from my hairline in front towards the back of my head. Of course my head is longer than that on top, so I do the same thing from my crown towards the front. I look like a science experiment until I take them out.

I can't tell from the photos, but is your hair longer than before you developed this problem?
I know the *definition* of a 3a is someone who's hair gets curlier as it gets longer, but when you say the curls start to form but get pulled out, I wondered if lightening the weight with a little shorter hair might help.

Also, if you're going to try clips, Mayim's pictures are the best (Thank you, Mayim)

Can't do that in the shower, but I prefer to wash my hair bent over the side of the tub. Awesome hair this way!
