TO LAYER OR NOT TO LAYER?! OH ME, OH MY!

Ok, I admit it! I'm kinda feeling like I need a hair change. I've always had a straight cut across (after my hair's washed and detangled). I know that you're supposed to get it cut dry, but... the vast difference in curliness has led me to believe it might be worse.

The most I've done is tapered on the sides when I grew out bangs. That looked nice, so maybe I should do that, but where to start the taper and how far down?

My hair looks fine, but... I want to do something slightly different. Even semi-drastically, but no dying.

Who has layered their hair? What kind of layers? What were the results?

So.. should I go layer my hair somehow?
If looking at my hair will help, I can get those up.

...2C-3A with a little 2A-ness in the back... why won't the back just switch over to 3A too? CURL, you hair! CURL like your friends! *sigh*
i think a lot of curlies look great with long layers. that's what i have. and if you've never had problems with having your hair cut wet, keep doing it.

of course we can tailor recommendations to you if you post pics (who am i kidding, i just love seeing other curlies' hair pics!). how long is your hair now? is it thin or thick?

I have long layers too and I think it looks good on alot of curlies. Either that or point cutting which is cutting random curls different lengths. Anything for me that takes away that look of flatter hair on top and then wider hair on the bottom!
2b/3a, primarily use Jessicurl and DevaCurl products, Curls Hair Tea conditioner and various gels. I'm modified CG-ish since 5/04.
Well, I have concluded that I need to take pictures with my hair down. Sorry, I don't really take many pictures with my hair down.. cuz I don't wear it down often. (I hate having it in my face.) Here are several pics to show the variety my hair has. Which is nice and not at the same time.

Okay, here is me after cutting off 12 or so inches last summer:
(bad picture because.. I took it of myself)

Here's my hair longer (waist length) and looking not-very-defined. (And check out the little strand of frizz...geez.) Most of the tight and defined curls are in the back. When I set them free from the hair below by putting my hair half up they just freak out and bounce up.. unfortunately, it didn't occur to me to take a picture of the back.

I hope this helps with my question, I really don't know... Thanks for your help!!

I will be trying some gel tonight and if it turns out I may post that....

gosh I love your hair long... you shoulda stuck with that and layered it...
I think some layers would look great on your hair!! I wouldn't cut them any shorter than chin length (when dry). Your hair is very pretty, and your name fits you nicely.

Your hair, it's everywhere. Screaming infidelities, taking its wear.
I just HAVE to have layers in my hair otherwise it looks like a big triangle. My hair dresser cuts some layers here and there to not create that "shelf" look to it. Love it!

when my hair gets longer, i'm definately keeping layers in it. i had the beveled ends when it was long last time (basically the same length, just with a SLIGHT layering about an inch from the bottom), but it basically hung down with no body. i was terrified of saying "layers" to a stylist because my mom said that once when i was little, and they cut the top layer 1 inch from my head, and then added an inch to each lower layer...yeah...total mushroom head...it was HORRIBLE.

now? i'm all for it! i love that it looks syled a little more then just having long curly hair...
and after seeing "The Closer" the other day at my mom's, i want them NOW!

i know her hair isn't as curly as mine, but GOSH does it look fabulous! i think my hair would do that at that length because of the weight...
i guess i just need to wait for my hair to grow another 12 inches or so...
ho hum...

I'll vote for layers, too. Your hair is thick enough for them. Why not start with long layers -- not much distance between the longest and shortest layers -- and maybe taper a little bit toward your face? That works for most curlies. You could always layer a bit more later if you want.

I vote for long layers too! Couldn't live without them because it reduces hair volume and takes away the triangle hair look.
