Products your hair doesn't like

I have noticed that pomades and hair products in spray bottles don't do much for me/are never effective on my hair. The pomades are usually too heavy and coating, and the sprays just don't seem to moisturize enough or provide any hold.

Are there hair products that you see on the shelves and just know are not worth your time

Pretty much every mousse, most gels, pretty much everything in drug stores except a couple of Suave conditioners to wash with once in a while, anything by Redken or Curls Rock. Definitely no drugstore shampoos.

Most of Jessicurl, most products with a lot of protein, jojoba oil or magnesium sulfates.

Any "straightening" products (waste of time.)

leave-in condish (unless it's a tiny amount mixed with lots of gel)

most drugstore poos and condishes

most gimmicky drugstore products -- this will straighten, this will curl, this will elminate frizz, this will create shine, this will keep it healthy...blech, no they wont't...

brushes

mousse

So far I've had pretty good luck with the products I have been using on my naturally curly hair. If I felt it would be suspect I wouldn't even bother. One product that I'm still unsure about is Black and Sassy Caribbean Leave in. The jury is still out on that one. It's moiturizing but my hair dried frizzy when I used it. It may work best on my hair when it's dry...I haven't bothered to test that theory though.

It doesn't like pomades, waxes, mousse, anything with a list of chemical-sounding ingredients a mile long, anything really sticky or greasy, and is fussy about gel. Doesn't care about the price, will like 89 cent VO5 but will hate something that's $25 (fine by me!).
My hair knows what it likes, tells me about it, and wonders why I try other stuff. Very bossy hair.

Found NC in 2004. CG since 2-05, going grey since 9-05. 3B with some 3A.
Hair texture-medium/fine, porosity-normal except for the ends which are porous, elasticity-normal.
Suave & VO5 cond, LA Looks Sport Gel, oils, honey, vinegar.

curltopia,

Looking at your pics our hair looks very similar. My hair is loving LA Looks Sport gel at the moment but any day now it will decide it wants a new kind, then the search is on again.

Umberto Giannini Curl & Crap Gel is the devil.

So is Citre Shine Curl Crap Curling Creme.

Shea Butter cream is way too heavy and greasy for me in the summer. Perhaps I will try again when the chill sets in. I tried mousse when I was younger and got hair so dry and crispy, I thought it would burn like a camp fire at the slightest hint of hot wind.

I used this leave in a while back. Left my hair soft but that was it. I wouldnīt buy it again.

Fantasia IC didnīt work me as well as Got2b gel.

I stay away from mousse.

Sally's Generic Conditioning Balm.......Eck!

I can't describe how it felt. I guess it almost felt like I was putting a glue based condish on my hair. Felt absolutely horrible.

I had heard so many good things about the Biolage version, that I figured that the generic would be a better buy(it was 4.99). Never again. I plan on returning it this week and exchange it for what I had went to Sally's for in the first place.
A wonderful mix of coils, curls, corkscrews, and kinks.

Remembered something else my hair doesn't like - pure glycerine. It's okay in products, but on it's own it turns my hair into a giant ball of fuzz.

curltopia - sorry, no pics. at some point i suppose i should come into the modern age and get (and learn how to use) a digital camera, scanner etc. but i love my very old laptop, ancient printer, and even older 35mm camera.

I am still trying to figure out what ingredients my hair doesn't like. How do you figure this out? I figure that when my hair puffs out with no definition, that is a sign my hair does not like something. But it's hard to pinpoint one ingredient. For example, it seems my hair has a reaction to Elucence-- it turns cotton-candy puffy-- but if I add honey to it it looks great. And with One Condition, I thought there was something my hair doesn't like in there because as a leave-in I get puffy, gunky hair, but rinsing a little of it out and it looks/feels fine. I tried Aloe Vera gel straight, and got huge puffy hair. But I've used products containing aloe and my hair comes out just fine. I don't get it!

It could be that your hair can only tolerate small amounts of aloe vera, or only in certain combinations, and can handle One Condition for a short time but not all day. I can use small amounts of protein in conditioners, but none at all in stylers so far. I know Cehua can use products with glycerin but not straight glycerin.

Interestingly, Amneris and I seem to like opposite products. She says that Elucence is moisturizing, but Too Shea wasn't enough moisture. For me, it's the exact opposite. Isn't that weird?

What ingredient in Elucence do you think it could possibly be that our hair doesn't like? I was thinking maybe the Brewer's Yeast? It's pretty high up on the ingredients list. Doesn't yeast make things expand? I think there is protein in yeast too. So Too Shea works well for your hair? I haven't tried it yet.

my hair doesn't like anything in the matrix curl life, got2b, or garnier fructis lines. but maybe they're just bad products?

Terax and Kerastase products and Cholesterol conditioner also are just awful for my hair.
