Default gel recommendations?

I have been browsing this forum for a little bit now and have eliminated silicones and sulfates from my routine. I am currently trying out the Jessicurl styling products - RR and CCSS with some awe inspiraling spray throughout the day. I like the way my hair feels for the most part, but am having trouble lately with getting hold that lasts for more than a few hours. I might need to just use more product, but the amount of CCSS that I can use is pretty small. I still want to use it sometimes, but am looking for a good gel to mix with RR some or even all of the time. I am really picky about gels though - I tried the Clairol HE humidity defying gel and did not like it. It made my hair feel dry and limp. I am tempted to try Angell, but wanted to get some other ideas first. I don't like a lot of crunch, but can deal with that as long as it will crunch out - I don't like a sticky feeling in my hair. I think my hair is really sensitive to too much alcohol or protein... Anyone have any ideas?

If you are careful in the amt and distribution, you can avoid crunch with Biosilk Rock Hard gel. I also have problems with gels leaving my hair limp (Aura, Aussie, Biolage, Clairol HE and Angell) -- but the BRHG, if it works for your hair (and it doesn't work on everyone's) is incredible at maintaining hold.

Sombody here recommended the BRHG to me a few days ago. Of course I ran right out and bought it and LOVE it! Gels are usually the only thing that works in my hair. My hair is fine and needs a lot of hold and texture, otherwise if something makes my hair too soft, the curl falls out.
I loved the look of the Jessicurl products, but I also felt that it didn't have as much hold as I needed. The problem I usually have with gels is that I don't like 'em crunchy, and if I can scrunch out the crunch, then their is no hold left (this is what happend to me with Auro and HE def gel.) This didn't happen with the BRHG..........but it took a lot of scrunching to get all the crunch out, but the hold was still there. Maybe using a leave in under it would make it a little less crunchy (I haven't tried that way yet, that is what I'm going to do today.)

Batia & Aleeza bio mineral gel gives good hold for me, without crunch or producty feel. It doesn't even feel like a gel because it's much thinner in texture. Angell is probably my second favorite gel because it doesn't give too much crunch, and whatever crunch it gives is easily scrunched out. It smells really good too! Btw, I'm not a big gel fan either, which is why I like these two.

Kurlee, lushaholic and Supercurl: Wow! Your hair is amazing. And Supercurl--that is the style I am looking for! It looks great with either the Jessicurl or the BRHG. It looks like both products keep your hair curly. How long is it wet? Do you have layers? I need details so I can tell my stylist!

Thank you for the compliments benthudd. My hair is rather curly on it's own, I generally don't have to find a product that gives it more curl. If anything I just need to find something that will hold it and give my hair some texture, and won't pull the curl out by making my hair too soft which turns my curls fluffy. My hair is VERY fine. It looks thick, but really when it is wet or when I straighten it (which I very rarely do,) when I gather it into a pony tail, it is about the size of a nickel. The texture of my hair is like straight hair, only my hair is curly, does that make sense? My hair is very easy to straighten b/c of the texture, and when it is straight it looks like it has always been that way, it doesn't look like I have curly hair that I have straightened.

I haven't had my hair cut in about 6 months, I'm trying to grow it out. I couldn't figure out why I was so unhappy with my hair and then it dawned on me that I was happiest with my hair when it was longer. It was culier, and easier to handle b/c I didn't have weird pieces sticking out and looked more uniform.

Okay, got a little bloggity there, so to answer your questions:
It is a little layerd. When my hair is straight it hits just below my shoulders.

What type of products do you use in your hair?

thanks for the recs -
SuperCurl, your hair is curlier than mine. But, I also have fine hair that can look thicker when dry. I am still experimenting with products, but have found that I really like Sauve conditioners (Lavender at the moment), Givanni conditioner (leave in but not using it every day), RR, and glycerin/water spray. I like Giovanni 50/50 shampoo for every day and occasionally use Aveda Rosemary Mint shampoo to clarify. I have found that since I started following advice on this board I can't tolerate SLS or anything harsher.
I actually bought a sample size of Aveda's retexturizing gel yesterday (I love sample sizes of anything) despite the so-so reviews that it gets around here. I actually kind of like it - it makes my hair feel thicker and fuller. I am a little disappointed because I was hoping to find a cheaper gel, but I am still looking around for sure.
Thanks for the ideas -

Super, you have very pretty hair!! The cut is adorable, and I love how you left your lips in one of your pictures, it made me smile.

Sarab, Biosilk RHG is great. It can give you that long lasting strong hold that you are looking for. It is not sticky and can easily be scrunched out. The look you get is very defined curls that will beat the humidity. Great for outdoors! B&A gel is great too but it has a lot of proteins and you mentioned that your hair might not like that.

Supercurl, you have beautiful curls that are frizz-free! Love your cut too. Your avatar and sig line are so cute! Love them!

I like Biolage gelee, but people seem to either love it or hate it. I don't find that it makes my hair too crunchy.

Thank you! You have georgeous curls! LOVE how shiny and bouncy they are! Also love your color. I'm actually MUCH darker than in my pics. We've been spending the summer in the pool which has lightened my already highlighted hair! I have a lot of grey that needs covering. After seeing your hair, I can't wait until fall to go darker and maybe forgo the highlights altogether!

One of these days, when I get a little braver I will post a few pics of my adorable, lovable children My dd's hair is perfectly straight, shiny, soft, thick, light brown w/ beautiful natural gold highlights...........the type of hair I wanted my whole life My ds has wavy, thick, light brown hair also with gold highlights. He did have some curls when he was a baby, but once I had his hair cut, they were gone I keep his hair short, so not sure what his hair would look like if I let it grow.

Default Gel

Best gel I have ever found for my curls is Bumble & Bumble Straight (ironically). I really like that it is unscented too as I am scent sensitive and most gels are just too loaded with fragrance for me. Unfortunately it's much too expensive for me for everyday use - I keep it for special occasions. I made the home-made flax seed gel for the first time this week - I like it but think I need something with a bit more hold. It does give me soft curls and no crunch.
