Curls--to school?!
I'm so afraid to wear my hair curly to school. Its how my hair dries naturally and I've always straightened it. I know how to fix it pretty butI'm just afarid to wear it like that. I dunno what I'm gonna do.

I am *about* your age ( I too am a teenager) and I wondered about this too but I have been feeling more confident lately (not like im hiding who i am with my curls) and I have decided to go for it! I hope you do too! Spend more time on the boards getting support and I promise youll be more confident too!

Have your friends seen you with curly hair before? If you really are terrified of wearing your hair curly to school, why not first try wearing it curly to a friend's house and see how they react. This can ease you into the idea of going curly and hopefully make you feel more comfortable about your curls. I'm sure that most of your friends with straight hair wish that they had curly hair so imagine how jealous they will be when they see you have the beautiful curls they've always wished for!
In middle school I realized I had curly hair (I had been brushing it out and thought it was just wavy). When I started wearing it curly, everyone LOVED it! They were so shocked that my hair was curly. Every one was so supportive and nice about it, and I got a lot of compliments.
I really think the bottom line with curly hair is how YOU feel about it. No matter what other people think about your hair, YOU should feel comfortable with it. Sure, some people don't like my hair, but really, I don't care. It's all about your attitude.
Good luck roses, and princesscurly!

I second this! After all, almost anyone can straighten their hair with the right tools, but to have lovely natural curls isn't equally as easy, so I think you should flaunt them if you have them!

When I was in high school, the few times I was able to get my hair together enough to wear it curly I got a lot of compliments. I wear my hair curly every day to college now and I still get compliments on my hair.
Basically, if YOU think your hair looks good, go for it - you are capable of judging whether your hair is acceptable or not, and if you get any crap from someone when you know it looks good, it's because they have some sort of problem (jealousy, straight hair fixation, mild retardation, etc.) and you don't need to bother with them.

Maybe wear it curly in a ponytail, half ponytail/half down or some kind of casual updo first. Then people will get used to it being curly without getting the full effect all at once. You'll be starting a new school year, right? Don't lots of people return to school in the fall with a new look?

i also go to school and it took me a long time to figure out how to wear it properly! i straightened my hair a lot though, so when i did wear it curly i always got tons of compliments. try it out! it's so much better for your hair and if you feel like its bothering you midday, put it up in a high ponytail and leave some tendrils around your ears and such. i find that always looks cute, and i have long bangs that come across my forehead/eyes that i part to the left, so it gives it some kind of style too. hth and gluck!

Get ready for a lot of compliments!
Really, I mean it, specially if it surprises people... they will say something nice. Some people say something stupid when they are surprised too, but nevermind that. It just happens.
It has to do with your confidence level. If you walk head up high, and love your curls, it plays in the impression.
It is hard in life to take nothing personally (specially in high school), but in reality, nothing is personal.
Hang out here, and practice saying "thanks" with a nice smile for the moment when you get a compliment.
If you depend on what others think, you are bound to be hurt when someone who has a different taste than you crosses your way.
And you can choose to be happy and hurt-free.

I tried straightening my hair through junior high and into high school until I just got tired of it. I got help from my hair stylist on how to fix it every day and eventually just started wearing it curly. I started wearing it half back in a barrette. Then, I figured out how to make it look good down and wore it that way on a weekend around a few friends. I got some compliments and some self confidence and started wearing it down to school. It was also amazing how many people thought I got a perm.
But, wearing it curly around a smaller group at first is a good idea. That way, it feels like you have a support group at school - not that you need one because people always like naturally curly hair, but I know how hard it can be.

I like what Petitfox said. Don't be scared to try something you want to try and then back away from doing it because you are afraid of people's reactions.
I know it can be a scary thing to try something new because they are ppl who can be mean, but if that happens you can come and tell us about it! We'll listen to you! Plus I'm sure that the reaction to your hair won't be as bad (maybe not bad at all) as you think it will be! You'll get more compliments than meaness, I'm sure! Ease into the idea, as many here have adviced and good luck! :P

When I was at high school I brushed my hair and it looked awful, and I wasn't happy at all and people were always insulting my hair. So when I started college last year I decided that I would wear my hair curly, as it should be, and all my friends love it! I'm so much happier with my hair curly.
So I think it'd be a good idea to wear your hair curly, but if you feel uncomfortable doing it first at school then try having it curly around a small group of friends like other people suggested. Good luck!
