Updated pictures

Hello all,

I've updated my photos with new pictures of my hair, these are less frizzy and more like what I'm used to seeing on my head. I'm still trying to get a handle on what type I am (3b/3c, something else?). If someone could take a look and give me their opinion I would really appreciate it.

Thanks! (again)

Thanks! Now I know I'm in the right place. I thought that I was 3c also, but this is the first time I've ever even heard these classifications so I wanted to get someone else's opinion. Now I just need to find someone with hair exactly like mine so I can steal their routine, LOL!

Just wanted to say that you have very beautiful hair. Once you get a routine down, you'll just take it to the next level.

Thank you so much! It's funny how you can hate your hair and lust after someone eles' while someone else can look at it and think your hair is nice I think as I get used to it I won't feel that way so much (I hope). I know I feel better about having it down today than I did the other day. By about 2pm the other day I had put my hair in a pony tail, today I think I might make it all day. I posted a new pic to my album with a side by side comparrison of the two diff days/product applications. I think brushing with the denman brush really made a difference. My hair looks a lot smoother today.

I was thinking the exact same thing Amneris! Now I want to go and find everything Curltopia has posted so I can copycat, LOL! I'm also wishing I could get curls like LipGlassHoney, pretty!

3cmale, I use a concoction on my hair that I mix up myself. I'm allergic to just about everything so I already make my own lotion/soap/etc. Yesterday I saw that someone (sorry I don't remember who) used flax seed gel and other stuff in her hair and I decided to mix up my own concoction.

So here's what I did/used:

2 tsp. flax seeds
1 cup water

Boil for about 10 mins until it thickens into a gel and strain out flax seeds. I ended up with about 1/2 cup

I then added 1/2 cup almond oil (which I now think was way too much)
1/4 cup shea butter
1/4 cup cocoa butter
1/4 cup aloe vera gel
1 tbs. glycerin
1/2 tsp. citric acid
jasmine essential oil for scent

I blended this all together until it was the consistency of... maybe cake batter. I was going for a cream but I think there was just too much liquid from the flax gel and almond oil. I'm going to try adding stearic acid and maybe a little emulsifying wax to it tonight to thicken it up a bit. I might also just try adding more butters to make it solid. Overall, I'm happy with the result. I have great hold and shine but I don't like having to slop it on my head.

I also used some ORS olive hair lotion mixed with a little honey on each section right before braiding. This was on top of my concoction. It's a work in progress right now. If I end up with a good final recipe I will post it here.

ETA: I just remembered that I also used some ampro clear gel on my pony in the front yesterday. I don't like using this gel on all of my hair because it is a little drying in my opinion, but it has great hold and is good for those flyaways you get in the front.

You're so sweet! I haven't been claimed by anyone in a long while... (ok, maybe never ) We could be hair cousins, but I am still searching for my twin...

Post some pictures of your hair just naturally air dried without a braid out, so I can see your curl pattern when it's not stretched out. NAKED HAIR is always fun too :P

As for my tips, recommendations and routines, they are all over my fotki albums, the 3b board and Amneris's super fantastic 3c information thread! It may take me a while to respond to any questions given busy-ness in my life right now, but I will respond

PS. Your avatar picture is fabulous, but why isn' it in your album?

Thanks for the compliment as well, makes me feel a lot better about walking around with a curly head. These first few days have been hard, I keep wanting to retreat to the safety of my pony tail

Well, I air dry every day and LOVE it, so if you are interested in my routines and tips that is a big one right there..

As for Naked Hair, I do that more rarely, but it is fun to see the true condition of your hair.

You should feel great about letting your curls out loose and free - they are pretty and look good on you! They look much better than some boring ponytail...

Thanks again Curltopia,

While I have you "on the line" so to speak can I pick your brain a bit. I was just looking at your pictures and saw that you listed some washing conditioners you like, does this mean that you can wash your hair with conditioner? I've seen some other references to this on the site but I don't really understand what it means. Could you please tell me how this is done and what the benefits are? My scalp is fairly oily and if I don't wash it about twice a week it starts to itch pretty bad Can washing this way get your scalp really clean?

I also added my avatar picture to my album, it's number 7 in the "second attempt" album

I have to log off really soon (right after this post), but here are some quick answers.

Yes, I "wash" my hair with conditioner almost every day. I also use a mild, non-sulfate cleanser or shampoo once or twice a week, typically after leaving in some light oils or a nice cream in my hair overnight.

Since I apply water and conditioner to my hair just about every day, my hair stays moisturized. And if I sense heaviness, build up or gunkiness, then I reach for either a scalp treatment or some mild, non-sulfate shampoo (all the gory detail on what products I love and own and use and recommend are in my PJ fotki album, so I won't repeat any of that here).

Also, I noticed in your original thread that you are using Feria That is one of the harshest, strongest hair dyes out there and no wonder it is screwing with your hair and making it appear texturized when it is not. You should check out natural hair colors. I recommend Naturtint (and have an album for that too) but there other choices. There is a natural vegeteble hair dye thread going on in the coloring board that might help. There are a ton of henna threads too. I want to henna but can't risk the inconsistent and possibly scary results given work. Also, I am happy with Naturtint so see no need to change right now. And it does not alter my curls at all

HTH!

I know you're probably not going to see this tonight but I still wanted to send a quick thanks. I am definately going to stop using the feria, I only dye the top part of my hair and this is the part that I've had the most trouble getting to curl, it's almost straight in some sections, that's why I almost always braid my hair to curl it up. I never would have thought that it was the dye that was changing the texture of my hair. I wonder how long that's going to take to grow out, LOL!

I saw that my health food store has Naturtint while I was there yesterday but I didn't know how good it was so I didn't pick it up. I just looked at the pics in your album and it looks like you got great results so I will be trying this in the days/weeks to come as well.

Thanks again!

I updated my album with pictures of my first attempt at second day hair. It looks pretty frizzy but I think it is presentable. I need to find some kind of cream or something I can put in on day two after spritzing with leave-in and water to help control the frizz. Any suggestions?
