First post! Between a 3A and 3B, I think.

Hi everyone! Here's the thing with my hair. Most of my hair on top is really curly, especially in front. However, my hair on the bottom is between wavy and curly. Also, my hair is thin, but I have lots of it. I need to know what products- shampoo/conditioner/gel, whatever, I should use or you recommend for me because I have had no luck what so ever in finding something that works for me. I can never wear my hair down curly because it's usually too frizzy or I just hate my curls. I think it's also the style of my hair cut. I don't know what to ask my hair stylist to cut it like either. I guess I just need advice in EVERYTHING! :P

Thanks in advance.
Ok, so after reading through a bunch of comments that ya'll left, I see that a lot of you don't shampoo your hair everyday. And that you also don't brush your hair? Right now I shampoo everyday with Paul Mitchell One Shampoo and use Matrix sleek conditioner. I also use a pick to comb through my hair afterwards. So, should I be changing my routine? Today actually, I tried leaving in about 50% of my conditioner still in my hair when I got out of the shower, and it really did make a difference. Maybe I should invest in a leave in conditioner.
Also, I think I'm more a 2C/3A now that I examine more closely
Hi and welcome. I don't shampoo everyday. I shampoo every 3 days or so (I can go 4-5 in the winter) and I've found that even cutting down to every other or every 3 days makes a big difference. Also, I definitely don't brush. It makes my hair poofy and it tears some of the hairs too. If I comb I do it with a wide tooth comb in the shower with alot of conditioner in. Mostly I just use my fingers to detangle.

If you feel the need to wet your hair everyday, maybe try shampooing every other day and just conditioning the ends of your hair on the off days. This is how I started and as long as I don't put too much cond. right near my scalp, I'm good. Even if on the off days you think your hair looks or feels greasy, believe it or not, as your hair and scalp adjust, this problem will take care of itself and your scalp will stop producing as much oil to compensate for less washing. You can just massage your scalp really well with your fingers in the water and that makes a difference too.

As for products I love Jessicurl stuff, Devacurl stuff and Elucence conditioner is awesome. Actually Elucence is reasonably priced and can be used as a rinse out or as a leave in so that would definitely be a good investment for you. It's available in Curlmart here. Jessicurl sells samples but unfortunately Devacurl doesn't. There's also a salon area where different salons are recommended. Maybe you could find a stylist in your area that is good. Alot of folks have long layers or point cutting (cutting random curls different lengths so they don't get that wedge look) done.

If you don't find that you get alot of responses in this forum, post your questions on the general hair discussion board too. Everyone looks at it, not just the certain hair category.
2b/3a, primarily use Jessicurl and DevaCurl products, Curls Hair Tea conditioner and various gels. I'm modified CG-ish since 5/04.
Hi there! Welcome!

Kimmyc made a lot of great points. I definately recommend the book Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey.

As for my routine, once I put gel in my hair (I recommend Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee - awesome gel that seems to be most sucessful in hair types like yours), I don't touch it. Not at all, until completely dry. I don't towel dry either. It just makes frizz.

There's so much more to say, but I recommend continuing to read around the site. The 3a board has some great info. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the tips. I'm going to try today for the first time to not brush my hair and to detangle it in the shower with my fingers. Kinda nervous. But, we'll see. Also, I'm kinda nervous about not shampooing everyday because my hair is thin and gets greasy really easily on the scalp. I think I'll start with every other day of shampooing. Then, on the days you don't shampoo, do you still use conditioner? I have to check out the products you recommended as well. I'm almost out of shampoo, so I would like to invest in a new one for me to start off and maybe a leave in conditioner then.
I didn't use a brush or a pick today. My curls were a lot more defined but some parts of my hair was fuzzy and the rest were stringy. I didn't use any products in my hair, and left about 50% of my conditioner in my hair again today. Any advice?

Also- curly princess- I have almost the exact same kind of hair as you. I liked at yours in your www. My curls are just like yours but just on top, underneath my hair is only wavy. I even have almost straight hairs way underneath. My hair is odd.
jax - the underneath layer of my hair is also much less curly than my top layers. it's barely wavy! you're not alone

Cool, jax! Maybe you are my hair twin, which is really cool because I've never had one before. Now I'd love to see some pictures (hint hint)!

I posted a while back a ton of tips I have picked up, mostly from NC.com. Here's the post, I hope it can help you. http://naturallycurly2.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=55533 The whole thread is very helpful.

Ok, well, I went and bought the Jessicurl try-it-all trial size pack yesterday! Yay! I'm really excited! Not really sure how to use it. As of right now, I'm just in limbo. Not sure what to do. I'm nervous about not shampooing everyday, especially because right now, the gel I use isn't CG friendly. And, my biggest problem is adding volume and getting rid of frizz. Tried a honey rinse today, and my hair seemed to like that. Did an ACV rinse two days ago, and that made my hair frizzier than normal. Just giving an update and if any of you have any advice, it's much appreciated!

jax,

Just wanted to chime in my two cents. I have fine hair as well, and I no poo with Devacurl about once a week. On the other days I condition and I don't find that my hair is weighed down.

I wouldn't recommend Angell for styling -- I find that it gives thin air absolutely no hold, which surprised me but it's true in my case.

Good luck!

Still testing it out, just got it yesterday. I'll leave an update of how it's going soon. But as of day one, my hair is much softer, which makes me happy!

I've been using Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee and I love it! I ran out though and have been using a drugstore gel (Aussie) and I have lots of frizz.

I also find I can cut down frizz by my application. While my hair is still really wet, I rub a little gel on my hands and then smooth it over my top layer of hair. I don't actually finger comb my hair or anything; I just slide my hands over my hair with the gel. This really helps with halo frizz. Then I flip my head upside and apply more gel to all of my hair.

Good luck, and I hope your hair continues to improve!!
