Default Does your leave-in leave your hair dull?

I have black hair that has a lot of natural shine. Right now I am loving leaving in Paul Mitchell's The Conditioner but it leaves my hair a little dull.

Could it be the way that I am applying it? I apply it on soak and wet hair, comb it through, and pin it up while I am in the shower. I let it out after I leave the shower. Sometimes I add product (PM Sculpt and Foam or Kerasoft's or Aura gel) after I air dry for a 1/2 hour. I get chunkier curls this way but my hair looks dull.

Anyone else have a problem with creamy leave-ins leaving your hair dull/masking its natural shine or sheen?

Were you able to fix it?

Thanks in advance

I haven't had that problem with The Conditioner (which I love too) or anything else. My hair is also black and shiny. I think the problem might be with the leave-in and product. I am finding I like the look and feel of some products less and less compared to just with a leave-in. I think your application method is fine - I comb and brush conditioner through, too. Maybe you could try using less and see what happens.... if your hair can handle having less (mine can't.)

I will try using less (even though I found that using more gives me chunkier curls). It may be the product residue from a previous day too so I will try it a week with no products at all.

It may be that I am conditioning in the shower first and then applying leave-in. I will just go with the leave-in.

Thanks. I try your suggestions. It is probably a combination of other products and the wash out conditioner.

Oh, I am having a fab curly day. Even though my hair is slightly dull I have corkscrews (instead of my blah "s" curls). I think it is the PM The Conditioner that gives me the corkscrews.

I have to post some pictures soon.

Thanks again. Now I have to get back to work.

And yes, all other suggestions are welcome.

Last I checked, The Conditioner was blue. Is it still? Lorraine Massey mentioned in CG that gels should be clear so as to avoid a dull cast on the hair. Maybe the same principle applies to leave-ins? I don't know why a company would make a blue hair product...

Sometimes if I use too much, or if the styling products don't mix well, I get dull locs. The curls can look really nice, but my hair will look like I haven't washed it.

I haven't had that problem in awhile, especially since lately I have just been using one product as a styling product(Elucence). It's been nice giving my hair a rest from the gels and have it look just as good, if not better.

Elucence gave me dull hair too. I stopped using it because of that and it did nothing for my hair. Paul Mitchell and Kerasoft (a Canadian line that is different from Keracare) conditioners work better for moisture and softness.

I just thought of the problem. I was using the Generic Paul Mitchell leave-in as a rinse-out conditioner and applied the real PM The Conditioner as a leave-in. I wonder if the Generic caused the dull hair?

The only thing I do not like about the PM The Conditioner is the smell. The Generic one smells better but if it is the cause of dull hair I will have to say bye and use something to cover up the weird smell of the real PM The Conditioner.

I will try that tomorrow and let you guys know what happened. I had gorgeous hair with the PM The Conditioner today and hope I can get around the dullness issue. And despite the dullness, I got a lot of compliments too!

Shyygirl: The Barry Fletcher Custard dried my hair out! I knew I stopped using it for a reason. Too bad that store does not take returns and I think I passed the limit for exchanges. Now I have to figure out what to do with it. Usually I use bad products as shaving cream LOL but I am afraid this may dry my skin. I will probably give it away to a curly.

That's too bad, Cehua. I haven't had any dryness problems with it(not yet, anyway). I actually used it yesterday for my twists. I would take it off your hands, but I still have my other two containers to use up. But I think that Lydyybuggin76 uses the custard also. Maybe she'll be interested in buying/swapping it from you.

I often use leave-ins and no styling product over it, and have been getting dull hair lately. I haven't figured out why either. Maybe I'm using too much. Or maybe it is build-up. I did figure out that with One Condition, if I give it a quick rinse (I assume most of it stays in) it comes out shiny, if I don't rinse at all it comes out dull.

I have this problem with most creamy leave-ins, unless I use a miniscule amount of them. I think it's because my hair is so fine.

Today I just used the PM The Conditioner and none of the Generic stuff. I also covered my hair in a satin scarf for the first hour it was drying.

My hair was not as dull as it was yesterday. And I noticed that the areas that was covered with the satin was shinier.

So, I am thinking the dullness could have been caused by a combination of the Generic The Conditioner, other products, and my hair not absorbing all of the leave-in because I put a lot of it in my hair.

I think the satin scarf helped my hair absorbed the excess product somehow. I will try to leave it on longer the next time.

The PM is making my hair a little poofy and big but I do not mind because it is giving me chunkier corkscrews (very rare for me). But ideally I would like less poof.

Portae: I find that most of your product suggestions work on my hair. What other creamy leave-ins do you use?

Urbancurl: I will try a quick rinse too. That may help. Thanks

Glad you are happier with your hair today. And thank you for the silk scarf on wet hair reminder! I remember doing that a couple times and it helped with shine and frizz.

I like those new Pantene treatments (they come in bottles with pointed nozzles). I have the one that's supposed to be for smoothing/straightening. I use a little bit of that before adding my gel. I also like a tiny bit of Herbal Essences conditioner as a leave in. I don't usually use regular conditioner this way, but that one works. I also like Aveda Elixer, but only in TINY amounts or else my hair feels gummy and looks dull. I often just use a spray leave in. I've used Infusium in the past, although now I'm working my way through a bottle of Motions. You could also try a lcurl activator lotion (Carefree or Wave Nouveau) in place of a leave in. These are glycerin heavy, very moisturizing, and won't leave your hair dull at all.

Thanks Portae.

I will try some different techniques for using the creamy leave-in and let you guys know what happens.

I REALLY want to try the Blended Beauty hair lotion. Gretchen says that they should be getting it any day now. This has been the first time I have been this excited about trying a new product in a very long time.

Hello!

I haven't been around much, but thought I could help.

The heat from the scarf on your head made your hair absorb the extra PM. I put a shower cap on my head while I do other stuff...if I've over applied and it normally works everytime.

Oh and I got my box of Blended Beauty stuff yesterday...very excited to try it this weekend

Potterville,

please post about the Blended Beauty when you try it!!!! I probably don't even have to ask , but I am so excited to hear more about it too. And that's interesting about the scarf or shower cap helping your hair to absorb the conditioner. I just put a scarf on my head becasue I could see some white, unabsorbed conditioner in my hair tonight. You might've just saved me from having to start over in the morning!

Well, I don't like anything that I ordered and I'm sure it's because of the amount of oil in her products. The Hair Lotion and Hair Butter, just don't do a thing for me. The Frizz Pudding only made my hair stringy and seemed to force the water out of my hair...drip drip drip The Cleansing Conditioner didn't do a thing and made my hair feel coated as well as the regular Conditioner. I needed to clarify my hair to get it out. I don't know why I don't just learn and honor my hairs request for no oil LOL

I hope you all have better results than I did.
