I tried using Boots and Suave's knockoff of PM Sculpting Foam today and so far I like it! It gave me more waves than curls, but that's okay. It made my hair look fuller and longer. I'd been wondering if anyone ever used Boots and mousse and could only find one post where someone did. Maybe that's the key to my mousse success is to use it with Boots .

Mayim, I recently polished off a bottle of that Aussie Foam + Leave-in & thought it was great. Gave my hair a lot of shine.

I'm definitely a mousse fan, but I'm not a hard-core CG-er so I have no problems with the 'cones and alcohol in mousses. I also have always had great results from Joico ICE Whip and Kerastase Nutri-Sculpt Mousse (though the Kerastase is really expensive & I got just-as-good results from the Aussie at a fraction of the price).

Gel tends to dry hard in my hair. Mousse gives me fullness and softness with curl definition. My hair is dry (don't know if the mousse is the culprit or it's just the dry weather I live in), so I use deep conditioners often.

Mousse didn't do it for me. I tried that Kenra stuff that everyone was raving about a couple of years ago, but it was pretty worthless. It was drying, had no control, and didn't do much in the way of curl formation. I need a strong hold product, and gels are usually better in that department than mousse.

Default Joico Ice Whip

I've used Joico Ice whip in conjunction with lots of other products, and I always seem to like my hair better with it in it than without it. No cones and it smells really nice and citrusy. A little goes a long way, though - if I use too much it gets sticky.

I haven't tried the Ice Whip with the Boots. Hmmm ... new experiment!

I know I am late to this thread but mousse works for me much better than gels do.

I like Joico ICE Whip (or Joiwhip, as it's now known - same ingredients, different package and name) so far and one big palmful does the trick.

Background on my hairtype: I have 2/3 hair with a mixture of curls and waves. My hair is coarse, thick, frizzy, needs shine and when it's wet has no curl at all yet it is NOT easy to straighten. Letting it air dry gives me flat hair so I have to diffuse for volume and curl/wave definition. This seems to be a winter issue too, since curls/waves are much better in humidity yet my frizz can be out of control.

I have tried and tried every freaking gel in the world (just when I think I love it and it's working great it looks horrible or it starts to feel horrible) and I simply cannot do the flat, leave the house with wet hair look. Can't. Do. It. And while I don't need super hold, some hold is a must to keep the curls/waves. I went back to mousse after checking out some old pics of myself and remembering all the stuff I used to put in my hair when I had no idea what I was doing. So I figured, what the heck? Let's revisit some mousse.

I like mousse because the volume, shine and curl/wave definition is great. I gave up CG'ing because my hair just looked bad when I did it, so I don't have an issue with dryness or buildup.

I am also looking to try the Garnier Fructis mousse and the Got 2B Gel to Mousse when my Joico runs out, so thanks for the rec's.

Method: Air dry for 20 to 30 minutes, then blow dry the under sections for about 5 minutes for volume.

2/3 mix waves/curls - coarse, frizz prone, med. thick, porous, at-home color for gray, NOT CG, regular S&C 3x a week. I hate crunchy hair or using too many products. Love my hair now!

I LOVE mousse! I have tried gels before but mousses give me the bounce i love. I think it suits my hair, which is medium textured. gels are great for touch-ups, but they don't work as my main product. I am a modified CG so I use John Frieda Frizz ease Curl reviver mousse. I'm not sure if that one is available in the US but it is in the UK. I used to think it didn't work cos it had a cone but I found out it has a water soluble one,PEG-12 Dimimethicone, and the rest is Ok, Cging speaking. I Cowash mainly, but I use a mild poo with coco betaine because I use other products which have got the not water soluble cones. But I have found out that I don't get build up from those insoluble ones. I think the improvement in my curls has been the sulfate free rule :P

I've been using SG (salon grafix-found at walgreens) under LOOB or a gel and really like the results. If I get too much crunch, I just scrunch it out. I find this combo gives me body and definition and I really like it. HTH

Default How and when?!?!?!

Ok, so I used to only use mousse...and only on dry hair- mousse on wet hair always seems to leave me with the crunchy, stringy wet look that I hate. But mousse on dry hair gets a bit crunchy in parts for me, but adds so much volume and is my hair's saving grace. So now I am using HE TT gel in wet hair after the shower, then wahen my hair FINALLY dries(currently looking in to trying diffusing again), I add HE TT mousse. It is so annoying to have to wait until my hair dries to add the mousse and have it look decent. Is there another time where adding mousse is effective? How and when?? Please help me to understand!

  • Apple Cider Vinegar rinses weekly
  • shampoos occasionally that do not contain sulfates
  • conditioners without silicones or proteins (or so I think- Keratin seems to do ok)
  • Flour sack towel
And I dont even know what else right now...thinking I may need to drop gels altogether...

Currently have Shea Moisture and DevaCurl products that I may just need to give up on and cut as a loss...

I actually put the mousse first and then scrunch or rake in some gel or LOOB in my hair when it's still really wet. When it completely dries, if I get any crunch, I just scrunch it out. I have found that this works best for me. HTH.

If I am going to let my hair air dry I use gel (herbal essentials) and mousse (Sunsilk captivating curls). If I am going to defuse my hair I use the same mousse, but I add RE:Coil instead of gel. I always let my hair dry for about 20 min., before I try and defuse. In the past this has worked absolutely wonderful for me for years. I use only a bit of mousse to avoid crunch.

I have been having some major hair issues the past two months though. I get a layer of frizz (almost a halo). I don't know how to get rid of it without putting so much product on my hair that it ends up being crunchy, I have been experimenting with many other techniques and products I have found on this site, but I find most of them crap out after about an hour, so I end up returning to my old method. For some reason my hair seems like it has really changed the past two months. I use to have very tame ringlettes, and now I have frizzy ringletty/kinky hair that is way to big for my liking. I know my method probably isn't the best, but right now it is the only thing that is kind of working for me.

Default SUCCESS!!!

Well last night I tried two things that I thought I had excommunicated from my life:
1. mousse on wet hair
2. drying with a difuser

and I came away with marvelous results!! It made my hair even curlier than air drying (although I am sure this will look better once my hair gets a bit longer, but still!) I was amazed. At first my hair looked the dreaded stringy, crunchy, wet hard look. But then I just let it air dry for a bit and scrunched and voila! It was gone!

So here is what I did (partly so I can compound it into my brain and partly in case it will help anyone else):

IN SHOWER
1. acv rinse (which i only do every 2-3 weeks)
2. suave naturals coconut conditioner

AS I GOT OUT OF SHOWER
3. sunslk hydra tlc 24/7 creme (a leave in conditioner)
4. herbal essences totally twisted gel
5. herbal essensces totally twisted mouse
6. diffuse- upside down for the most part, and using the pixicurl method (what i did was hold diffuser with hair scrunched next to my roots for about a min alternating from low heat to cool shot, then turning the drier off to resituate it at another section)
7. spray a bit of my newly concocted mixture of bioterra leave in and water and the outer parts that got dried a bit too much with the diffuser
8. let air dry for like 15 min, and scrunch

So it worked, granted it was using a lot of products (although all of them are very cheap!!) and I have only done it once so far...but the bottom line is...IT WORKED!!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR VALUABLE TIPS AND INSIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. i'm going to time myself today and see how long this process took for my own knowledge, but will gladly post the results for anyone who cares to know!
