Very new and very nervous!

Hello! I literally JUST registered here, but I've been lurking around for a while lol. I've had my hair technically natural for almost three years after I got tired of relaxing, but I've had it in braided extensions the whole time, and now I really want to just let my hair go free, if you know what I mean.

The problem is, I just have no clue what kind of products to use in my hair! I've been reading about good conditioners and bad conditioners and protein sensitivity and ingredients that aren't good for your hair, and I'm afraid I'm going to do something to mess up my hair. My hair (I think) is mostly 3c/4a and the last time I took my hair down to rebraid I believe it was about mid-back length when stretched out, but it's grown some since then, my hair seems to grow pretty fast. It's also very dry and has the amazing ability to form a huge puff in 0.003 seconds.

So anyway. I've got a few days off work this week so I'm going to take my hair down and see how it works. I picked up some Garnier Fructis stuff the other day, the Sleek and Shine conditioner and the Sleek and Shine leave-in conditioning cream. Was this a mistake? I also want to get some of that Fantasia Gel I've been hearing about. And if any of you lovelies with all the hair experience could offer any more recommendations I'd love to hear them :] Thank you!
Well my hair turns into a ginormous puff in 0.005 seconds so you got me beat! LOL

Garnier Fructis makes my hair look gross. Amazingly, it makes my daughter's 3B hair look beautiful. I say try it and if it doesn't work at least you didn't spend a fortune on it. I would love to see a picture of your hair. Fantasia IC Gel works on my hair and so does Eco Styler. My hair laughs at any kind of mousse I try to put in my hair.

Do you apply alot of conditioner in your hair before you detangle? Because I find that if I leave 50% of the conditioner in my hair, my hair will be soft and not frizzy the rest of the day.

Relaxer free for almost 5 years!

Thanks for replying!

And yes, that's what I told myself too. If it doesn't work at least it was cheap lol.

And I'm definitely going to take pictures once it's all down, they'll just be really craptastic because I don't have a USB cord for my camera and I have to use the camera on my phone haha.

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.

I've never used the Sleek & Shine condish, and I didn't care for the Garnier Fructis curl cream (I can't remember the name but it has a snotty consistency). However I have 2 cousins and a good friend who love the GF products so it can't hurt to try it.

Finding the right products for your hair will involve a lot of trial and error. It may also help to look through fotki's for people whose hair looks similar to yours and try some of the same products they've tried.

You can also look at tons of user reviews in curlmart... HTH!
mostly coarse texture, normal porosity... I think?

Welcome!

The one thing I've learned so far is that the natural journey is one of trial & error! LOL...When I first went natural I ran out and bought most of the products that got good reviews online...I can honestly tell you that none of those products work for me personally! Go figures!

Play around with your hair, and overtime you'll find the products/styling techniques that work for you.

As for Garnier products...they work well in my hair (sleek and shine, leave-in, curl creme, etc) Problem for me is that they build up fast! And I end up having to style everyday, which I'm too lazy to do.

If you have dense, dry hair I'd recommend a good, creamy leave-in and a strong gel like Eco-Styler. You may also get really good results from twist outs...something that I wish looked out on me!

Good luck!!!
Wow, thanks everybody! I love the advice

I think I'm going to do what you all said and just experiment and see what works for me. I'm actually about to take my hair down right now, and I'm really excited about the turnout. Let's hope it doesn't turn out too bad! *crosses fingers*

Wish me luck! ^^
