How do you know if you need to poo?

As many of you know I follow the CG routien. I have not shampooed my hair in a year and a half and everything seems to be fine. no build up, hair is growing, BUT...

I keep seeing hearing people say that not using shampoo is bad for your scalp. So my question is this, is it not using shampoo that is bad for your scalp or not cleansing your scalp? I don't use shampoo but I cleanse my scalp once a week.

My second question is how do you know if your scalp is being affected adversely by not shampooing? I know the usual signs of an unhealthy scalp like itching, flaking and dryness (none of with I have experienced), but are there other things I should be looking out for that might indicate that I need to shampoo?

Also for those who went back to shampoo after following a no poo routine for an extended period of time, did pooing cause any ill effects?

So far I have been really happy with my no poo routine but if it is not good for my body I will give it up. I appreciate any thoughts you all have on the subject.

There's always going to be something that someone thinks is "bad" for your hair. While it's good to be informed, don't get sucked into it. You've been on the routine for a year. Your hair and scalp is healthy. So there really is no problem. If it's working for you, continue doing what you're doing.

I could understand it if you were rolling around in dirt all day, and not washing your hair for a year. That becomes a hygiene issue and I'm sure does affect the health of your scalp. But you ARE taking care of your hair. I think that as long as the scalp is taken care of, then the hair will be healthy.

Since you aren't experiencing any problems, then I wouldn't worry about it. I think you'll know if/when you *may* need to use shampoo.

Thanks for the reply Shygirl.

I thought that I was ok but I wanted to make sure. I have ignored a lot of the no poo is bad for your hair stuff because I was clear that my hair was doing well, but I got a bit concerned when I started hearing that it is not good for the scalp. I didn't think I had any problems but I wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing. Thanks again for the assurance.

But for the original question, I don't think that there are scalp problems from no pooing. Some people with especially oily scalps (like myself)may feel the need to shampoo with a very gentle shampoo, because you can physically see the gunk under your fingernails if you don't

When you are cleansing your scalp, you are getting rid of the surface dirt and dead skin. Some conditioners actually have a bit of cleanser in them, so it's not like you aren't using anything to clean your hair or scalp. I say if your scalp seems very clean and healthy, don't sweat what people say. If it really bothers you that much, consult a dermatologist. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it [/b]
