Tempted to lop off my curls. Suggestions?

Only recently have I started embracing my curls. However I've been tempted to get a haircut because I've grown a little bored with my hair. I took a trip to the local salon and spoke with some curly haired stylists. I left shortly after when I realized Chewbaka was going to give me better advice than they were.

So I'm open to suggestions for new hairstyles and possibly colors (highlights/lowlights?)

I am digging this studs hairstyle though:

Is it even possible?

Here's some pics of my hair. My hair looks brown in some of the pictures but that's a result of the lighting, my hair is actually black. I'm a 3b/3c with fine textured hair. My natural curls look like spiral ribbons (sorry I don't know what the official NC term would be for this)

Hi and welcome. That example is a nice style for a guy, but you would have to have your hair cut shorter, and tousle your curls to break them up.

You may be able to get away with longer hair, like the guy in Numbers. The only caveat is if your hair is thin or you have male pattern baldness, in which case, keep it short.

From your photos, I have a feeling that whatever you are using on your curls may be too oily or have too much hold. You have a very strong curl pattern but it needs to be softer and fluffier. Not frizzier, just fluffier. Does that make sense?

Hi and thanks. I follow so far. How short do you think I would have to cut my hair? As far as my curl pattern, I can break up the ribbons into smaller ringlets if I run my fingers through them. There's nothing in my hair either in the pictures, my hair is just damp from a shower.
OMG your hair is gorgeous!
Its the same curl and texture as my son's hair. He cut off his hair though, but he's starting over again.

Would you consider going to a barber instead? I'm not sure what nationality you are, but here in Boston there are many Dominican barbers and they're good with cutting curly hair.

Anyway your hair is so pretty and if you cut them please mail me your cut hair

Your hair is gorgeous, I think you should leave it the way it is.
OMG! I don't want to tell you how to wear your hair, but it is GORGEOUS the way it is.

personally, becuase of you curl pattern, i'd say you should style it like the first one. a little messy and not so defined.

but then again, i find myself a lil bias twards the more fro type of style.

Thank you for the compliments, they're nice to hear, but they aren't exactly what I want to hear. Sure they look fine naturally, but, things change, why should my hair be any different?

Curlee, I tried the afro curls look for a year, I got tired of people always trying to touch my hair. There is something that seems to mesmerize people about afros. Personally, I never liked them I do like the carefree look though. http://mensfashion.about.com/od/goom...irstyles_4.htm
..but I doubt my hair could do that, heh.

Babydoll, I'm a guy. Yeah, honestly, I've been debating just growing them out even longer. I'm somewhat intrigued by the idea of adding a few more inches of hair before I give it the swipe. Still, before I get the cut, I need an idea of what I'm going to be doing with it. I've been thinking of adding scattered highlights, unsure of colors though, any suggestions?
Love, love, love your hair btw.

That being said, I don't think that you should color your hair, for several reasons actually. I color my hair, and have since I was 13, that's now been 25 years of chemically torturing my hair and I can't believe I still have hair. It's really dry and thanks to being CG other than the color it's in pretty decent condition.

I have a male friend who has similar curly hair like yours in texture and color. It is beautiful and I am jealous of him because of the condition and the shine his hair has.

And with hair as dark as yours it's really difficult to highlight successfully without making it look orange. You really need an unbelievably knowledgable colorist to take on highlighting hair that dark. And even that being said, the hair that gets colored may not curl as well as the hair that's not colored.

In my humble opinion I think you should leave the color and go for a cut if that's what you want. It truly is gorgeous and I would all but kill for hair like yours.
