Hello - new 3c member from TX needs help

Hello!!!

I am from Ft. Worth, TX and really love this website!!! We don't have lots of textured heads here - mostly bone straght hair. I am a 3c that was relaxed for many years and finally did the big chop 3 years ago, stopped relaxing and went the no-poo route. My hair has grown out a lot. I usually wear it in a bun and get the ends trimmed 1-2 times per year. It is now just below shoulder length when curly - bra strap length when I roller set.

I'm really tired of the bun all the time. I want to get a great haircut that will shape my hair and be professional looking. It has a nice healthy texture but very shaggy with no form right now. Seeing the beautiful hair on this board has really inspired me!! Also I have 2 curly headed pre-teen daughters - one with waist length 2B hair, the other with very thick mid back length 3c. I really need to get a grip on our hair!!! I am planning on going to a salon recommended on this board in the next week or 2 to get a really good haircut - long over due. Will post pics.

My current regimen:

Conditioner wash with Clairol Herbal Essences Intensive Conditioning Balm or L'Oreal Vive for Women of Color.

Apply castor oil and L'Oreal Curling Balm or Beyond the Zone Noodle Head styling cream - sometimes also Garnier Fructis soft curl cream.

I am intrigued by all of these puddings and custards and wonder what they might do for our hair.

Can any one recommend a really good pudding/custard and where to buy it??

I also plan to move up to the elucence hair conditioner. I have a Pleasant Image distributor nearby and he has been promising to bring me the liter bottle for the past 2 days but has not shown up. Very frustrating!!

Thanks again!!
Welcome!

I prefer natural products like Qhemet's Biologics (qhemetbiologics.com).

Also wanted to say that your name "solange" coupled with your location TX may spark inquiring minds (not to mention that your big chop date corresponds with timely tabloid pictures). So, tell Beyonce hello for us.

Sorry to dissapoint - I am not the Solange you are referring to. She is from Houston, not Ft.Worth.

Thanks for the website!!

That much I already knew. It was a joke.

Good luck with the products and your hair journey.

Aren't those products full of cones? And you use castor oil? But no shampoo? Could this be causing build up/limpness?

I really like Kinky-Curly Curling Custard.
3b (with 3c tendencies) on modified CG

I do low cone products and they do not seem to bother my hair. It is very thick so I need products to weigh it down and tame it.

I just purchased Miss Jessie's Curly pudding. It weighs the hair down too.

Your hair is really beautiful!!! I think that mine is of similar length, but my curls are tighter, not as loose as yours.

I am hopeful that a great cut can transform my hair. I'm a little nervous because we really don't have too many stylists around here that like to do textured hair. There are 1 or 2 on the Curlscene board that I'm going to contact about an appointment.

I am really taking a stand on this because I'm starting to see my kids go through self-esteem issues regarding their texture - getting picked on because ther hair looks "different."

Solange what salon are you going to? I have an appointment tomorrow for my 1st Ouidad cut in Plano. Its quite a drive for me...160 miles round trip..it will be worth it though just to have someone that knows curls...I hope

Someone recommended Jonathan there on the Salons area in Curlscene. I'll be honest - I picked it mainly because it's 10 minutes from my job

I know that sounds bad!!!!

I am not going to do anything radical - I just want to have a "shape up."

I'll post a review afterwards.

I had my first cut with Claudia at the Plano Texas salon this weekend...AMAZING is all I can say. First of all let me say I was a little nervous walking into the salon..its a bit outdated....but dont let their decor frighten you.

She spent a total of 2 hours with me (thats the longest I have ever spent in a salon). Before she even touched my hair she spent about 10-15 minutes just talking to me. She asked me what products I've been using...what are my hair troubles..what I expect with this haircut. This was the first time a stylist actually listened to me. She told me that my hair type was would benefit greatly from a Ouidad cut..I am a 3c (very thick, fine hair, tight spiral curls). She said those with very thin hair..not so curly arent really great candidates.
Now for the cut. She told me that my hair was in great condition and didnt have many split ends (which surprised me). She hardly took any length..she said she took a little but I cant tell. She systematlically cut each curl. In the end my hair cut was not dramatic (which is good)..my curls are much more defined and neater. She cleaner me up.. many of my curls were longer than other...the back of my hair is much curlier than the front..but now my curls just seem much more uniform. Many of my friends could not really tell I had my hair done..to me that is a good thing because I did not want dramatic...I just wanted my curls cleaned up and not so bushy..which she did.
Now the style. She went thru every step showing me how to apply product and style my hair..she even had me do a little bit to be sure I had the teqnique. This was the first time anyone has ever taken the time to show me how to style my hair. Usually the stylist have no idea how to style and I just leave the salon with my hair pulled back. I left that salon with my hair down and styled absolutely perfect.
My day in Plano was wonderful I had to drive almost 200 miles round trip and it was worth it. It was so nice for the first time in my life to actually have someone cut my hair who understands curls.
I HIGHLY recommend Claudia I will be returning in 6 months
