Curly families - you and your parents

I am curious to learn the results of this poll based on people's posts here on 3c. Feel free to specify the breakdown of your parents and your hair type in a post if you like.

My mom has type 1 hair (shiny, silky, coarse, jet black) and my dad is 4a (keeps it very close cropped and has less of it now, but I have seen old pictures of his soft fro). I came out 3b/c and my siblings also are type 3, but our curls and textures are all different- sliding scale of 3b to 3b/c to 3c.

No - daddy has 3a curls with some 2c and my mama is mostly 4a with a bit of 4b. I am 3b/c and my siblings also range from 3a to 3c- one sister is possibly 3c/4a.

my mothers hair is a tighter curl and drier, i don't know if it's coarse or fine, she says it's fine, but she might mean it's not as densely packed on her head. my dad's hair is much looser curl and smoother in texture. He's been known to wash his hair with regular bath soap without drying out, so I guess he has super-oily hair. his parents have different hair, too his mother has a relatively tight curl i'm guessing 3b-c, medium in texture and his dad's hair wavy-to straight.

My mother's hair was light brown 2c/3a, if even that curly, and my father's hair was dark, dark brown 3b. Both of their heads could be easily straightened with a brush, although it might frizz a wee little bit at the edges. Not what I would call frizz, but maybe the kind of frizz that John Frieda's Frizz-Ease products are designed for.

My mother's mother had 4b hair, but I can't tell what her father's hair was like. My father's mother had coal black, straight hair (she was substantially Native American), and his father had some variety of type 2 hair, the kind that had a very subtle wave in it.

Me and my siblings all have light-ish brown 3c/4a, I think. I can't totally tell, because it's not like there ever was a time when we were all on the same product regimens, but I think my brother's hair is somewhat more tightly curled than mine.

Not sure. My mother has relaxed her hair for years, so I've never really seen what it looks like natural. But I think I have an idea. She wears her hair short, so in the back when it's time for a touch up, you can tell. Her growth appears to be looser than mine(her strand size is thicker also, but I think she'd be in the 3b/c range). I think my father is a 4a. He keeps his hair cut short also, but there is a definite curl pattern. My sister is a 4a/b.

I haven't seen anyone in my family that I could classify as a hair twin, but I think my hair looks more like my paternal grandmother's hair(I believe she and her siblings ranged from 3a to 3c based off of old pics).

NO-my dads hair consists of silky str8 waves like philip micheal thomas...my mom is 4B. my sister has thick silky s patten hair like ananda lewis. my hair is like my dad's in the sense that its jet black w high sheen/shine...but the textures are totally different.

The adopted curly's ultimate question:

What does my mother's hair look like?! 8)

Curlilocs 03-17-2006 05:03 PM

I voted yes. My Mother has relaxed for years but from her back in the day 'fro pics her hair is 3c like mine but very fine and much easier to straighten. My Dad had loose, silky straight 3b ringlets, but it was coarse like mine.

I put "sort of." Everyone in my immediate family has/had curly hair, but mine's the curliest.

My hair is identical in texture and curliness to my maternal grandmother's, though.

My mom has 3c hair that is very thick but the strands are thin. She may have a bit of 4a around the temples like me. My hair pretty much follows her curl pattern.

My dad's hair is wiry and shiny, like mine. I think the top of my hair is a wave instead of a curl, like his. He would also be considered a 3c.

My mom's mother was a 2a and her dad was a 3c. My dad's mom is a 3b and his dad was a 4a or 4b, not really sure which.

susu 03-17-2006 05:38 PM

Mom had very soft, fine hair that was easily straightened (she never relaxed it). Maybe 3b/c?

Dad has thick, kinky 4b (?) hair.

My siblings and I all have hair that falls somewhere in between. My sister has a similar curl pattern as me (she's a 3c), but her hair is silkier/shinier. I think my brother's hair is also similar to mine (3c/4a?), but it's hard to tell since he's always kept it short. My hair's definitely the thickest/coarsest of the bunch.
:D

Thanks for all the votes and posts! Keep them coming!

A lot of you posted about your grandparents. My maternal grandparents both had type 1 hair just like my mother. My paternal grandfather may have been 3c, but he always kept his hair so short it is hard to tell - he bore some resemblence to duke ellington. I never saw my paternal grandmother's hair in its natural state because it was always relaxed, but it likely was type 4 - she also had a pretty medium brown complexion.

Nope, not at all. It's kinda a joke in my family that my hair is a mutation. :P

My mom had straight Asian hair with maybe a wave or two in it. My dad has curly hair, but it's more like 3a. Although if he grows his hair out, he has a 'fro - his hair doesn't grow down, it grows out.

And I have this kinda crazy 3b/c hair. It's weird because when I was little, I had like (very big and poofy) 3a hair. My curls have gotten a lot tighter.

I love your hair, Sapphire! You have great curls, very pretty, lively and versatile. And in terms of your hair being a "mutation" there might have been curlier ancestors on your father's side that help explain your hair type and texture.

Good seeing you again on a thread. Hope all is well.

Awww, thanks. I know I haven't been around much. I'm posting more though, and I have new pics. I'm gonna post them soon.

And yeah, on my father's side there is some distant ancestor or something who was like a curly hair god. My grandma on that side has pin straight hair, but my grandpa has slightly curly hair, like my dad's. However, my dad has a cousin who has hair so curly that she shaves it all off! :D I don't know exactly *how* curly her hair is since I've never actually seen it, but I imagine it is quite curly.

I'll keep an eye out for new hair pictures as I would love to see them and admire your hair in all its most recent glory!

LOL at "curly hair god" - I like that image! :D

Natakue 03-17-2006 11:14 PM

haha! i like "curly hair god" too!

my hair is like my mom's but you wouldn't know it because she doesn't take care of it!

I can't really vote, because I only know one side of my family and that's the white side. My younger aunt has large curls that as she gets older are less and less, my mother has a little wave in her hair in the back area and everyone else is straight. I'm sure my father had 4a hair from the pics, but not really sure...not much to go on.

subbrock 03-19-2006 01:41 PM

ive never seen my mother's natural hair, but i asked her what it looks like and she said that its not curly like mine that its looser and just kind of "there". whatever that means. i can tell shes not a 4 though...

i have hair like my dad. his sisters have the nicest curly hair (if only they knew about this site and how to take care of it, it would be amazing).

Have you run out of curl ambassador cards, bc Gretchen and Michelle would be happy to send you some

It's mind blowing how many of us can't tell the hair type of family members (for me, my paternal side). It's kind of crazy that so many hide their hair type.
