Default Stretch/elongate

What do you guys do to keep your curls long....let's say in the morning? My curls are actually past my shoulders but I put my hair in a low ponytail at night and wrap a scarf around it and then a bonnet (that may be much, but I don't want my hair to budge at night). So in the morning my hair is always above my shoulders, looking shrunken and much shorter than it really is. And I'm trying to figure out how to keep them looking long without using a lot of heat. Any suggestions?

Let it grow a bit, so you no longer have that problem. Give it a few inches more and it will stay below shoulder.

Other than that... I really don't know. You could maybe pineapple your hair to sleep?

try 2-strand twisting the ponytail to keep it stretched as it dries.

Growing your hair out is a good option for elongation, but if your hair is like mine, it would take like 5 years and maybe an induced coma, so that you don't move a muscle and do nothing to upset your delicate hair! Meanwhile, your hair probably would be long enough to sit on, yet that goes obscured because those touchy curls won't let themsleves hang that low...Meanwhile, velcro, straw, anything that has a seam, strangers yanking lint out of my hair are ALL on the prowl, ready to rip out my curly locks!

After many years of heat damage and over-combing, I decided to be simple and focus on what I wanted to achieve and to avoid. A) at night, if my curls are loose, I get knots at the bottoms, so a ponytail is not enough B) I want to stretch my curls just a tad, as they seem more vibrant and even this way. I make a ponytail at the top of my head, and I put scrunchies all the way down it, like having a ponytail, just with a scrunchy well secured every inch or so until you reach the end.

If you're gonna "scrunchy up", I recommend using a combo of 2 types of products: 1) gel and a little oil 2) styling cream and a little oil 3) moisturizer and a gel or 4) moisturizer and a little oil (if you want your hair curlier)...That way, doing one of these 4 things will leave your curls in tact (not puffy/fuzzy) and add some healthy shine, as a lot of products can dull the hair when they're dry. Oil is also good for helping to smooth out styling cream/gel that didn't blend in well.

I hope this helps. Let me know the results, and post pics if you can! I haven't taken a pic in so long, but I'll try to post one of this process on me.

If your hair is still wet/damp when you wake up it's going to shrink up as it dries (that is if you're wearing it out during the day). Pineappling overnight helps me stretch out the curls, but it takes a while for the hair to dry-- sometimes into the early part of the next day. Maybe try keeping your hair stretched until it dries 100% to get the most length.

Thanks ladies for your replies. In addition to trying to grow it longer. I think I may try your suggestion halogen1. Only because I'm moreso talking about when my hair is dry. I may also try keeping it stretched like BekkaPoo suggested.

I agree with halogen's suggestion of banding your ponytail. I wrap the length of my (dry) ponytail with a scarf and secure with elastics so my hair stays stretched out on the second day. I usually do a low ponytail though - that whole pineapple thing doesn't work for me - it totally throws off my shape.

Yeah, I can't do the pineapple either, I would definitely have some weird shaped hair. I'm gonna try to do a before and after....probably after I freshly wash it, to see the second day result. I'm due for a wash Saturday or Sunday.

I braid my hair while its wet and let it dry. I usually do about 5 on each side of my head. I let it dry overnight and the next day when i take them out my hair is stretched out to the base of my neck, almost to my shoulders as opposed to hovering around my ears. Twists also stretch my hair but I like braids better for overnight because they are more secure and aren't liable to come undone while I sleep.

Pineapple = pony tail on top of your head.

This protects your curls at the ends, and stretches out your hair at the roots. It works pretty consistently for me when I use this method to style.

I've tried to braid my hair after washing to let it dry...disaster for me. Maybe I'm not doing it right. But it looks a hot mess...I can't even explain it, lol.

I like my curls to look loose and elongated, so what I do is dampen my hair, and while wet I comb it with a widetooth comb. When the canopy to below my ears hair looks reasonably smooth, the straighter the better, I tie my hair into a semi-low ponitail and skip curl the hair that hangs from the ponytail. I then scrunch only that bottom portion. You could pincurl some individual curls to frame your face and secure on top of your heaD. Then I just keep my hair sleek like that and let it air dry, or difusse only the top straight part, the hair thats over the scalp, the bottom you can leave wet, because you want it to curl. his creates weight and north south curls, that look very pretty At night I just put a towel on my bed to protect it from getting wet, simple as that.

If I want my curls to be more stretched out I can pull them down GENTLY once my hair is 100% dry. It won't give you results like twisting or banding would but it gives a bit more hang.

Using heavier products helps with that too.

I saw this lady on Youtube do a trick to combat shrinkage and I gave it a try but in my own way just for fun cause I just normally accept shrinkage.

But anyway.. here is the video:

Here is what I do differently:
  • Use a wide tooth comb instead of a Denman (cause I don't like them much)
  • Part my hair in 3 sections..two in front (I wear my hair parted in the front on the side hence the two sections in front). One in back like a low pony tail at the nape of my neck. And I "banded" with 3 scrunchies, one on each section.
  • I didn't use any of the products she did because I use my own tried and true products which was Tresemme Naturals and a mixture of castor oil and olive oil in a squirt bottle.
I let my hair dry about 80% and slid off the scrunchies carefully (I didn't make them that tight but tight enough to stay put while the hair dried). I took the back scrunchy out first and arranged my hair downward. I didn't mess with it to much so as not to disturb the curls. I took out the front two scrunchies and arranged each side downward. I then let my hair dry a little more and then I kept shaking my hair upside down every once in a while as it was drying to completion.

And well it worked. Given, I wouldn't do this method regularly cause it takes a bit of time. But it's great like if you have a special occassion and you just want your hair to look longer for whatever reason.

I also tried this method with gel and oil. It works even better with gel. I guess the gel makes the hair heavier and allows for more hang. I have to make sure a decent amount of oil is mixed with the gel though cause I don't like my hair to be hard.

I've never tried to do this and go to bed. I always wear my hair loose to bed... but it might work if the hair is secure with maybe a bonnet to keep the banding parts from moving to much during sleep. And well it would probably be nice and dry in the morning and if it's to dry.. you could spritz a little moisturizer on it.

Braids elongate curls.
About four braids, two on each side, left overnight or until your hair is completely dry should give significant elongation. For the braids you can use shea butter, coconut oil or any other oil or styler of your choice.

I have no clue wish I knew... My hair actually draws up more and appears much shorter now that it has grown a bit braid-outs, ponytails etc my hair looks a hot mess, plus if I braided wet it would stay wet, it would be wet 4 or more days later lol and if I ponytail the roots and that banded around the ponytail stay soaking wet it would probably be wet a week later lol.. anyway my question is has anyone tried to manually elongate their hair with a blow dryer? I dont have a blow dryer(Dont know where it is lol) but i was thinking about applying product and holding/ slightly pulling my hair longer and blow dryinging hoping it would kinda freeze it or dry it rather in place and doing each section like that.. i'm not sure if blow drying would make it frizzy or not i've never really blown dried my hair.. anyway i'm hoping it will look like this, my hair wet with freshly applied product basically looks like this.. but of course it dries much curlier and much shorter..

I still haven't found an excellent way around the issue, but I find that letting your hair air dry for a bit (maybe 1-2 hours), doing one large twist and putting it up with a large clip for another 1-3 hours helps slightly. Of course, some of your hair will still be somewhat wet after the fact and some shrinkage does occur, but it's not that drastic.

What I do is to get my hair in a pony tail while it's still wet (securing it with a really good ponytail holder or two) then I tie a scarf over and pull the scarf so I have like the part of the scarf immediately connected to the tied part stretched out over my hair too. I did this once, took the scarf off at some point in the day then put it back on at night then took it off around 4pm the next day. Around 10pm-ish, I combed my hair out and my curls were really stretched!

I'm doing that again right now, because I got pretty upset about the amount of shrinkage I got today (plus, I decided to rock an afro). Someone asked me if I cut my hair and till I pulled at it (and showed the actual length), the person believed I cut it. Someone did ask me if I was wearing a wig too...x_X

Anyways, this is my method of stretching my hair.

*Oh! and don't take off the scarf till your hair is completely dry and don't take off the pony tail holder till you need to leave your house.
** The stretch is best after 2 days.

Things I use: Olive Oil, Canola oil, rosemary oil, aloe vera gel, shea butter, mayonnaise, eggs, milk, bananas

Everything I use is 100% natural. I make most of them myself because then I'm sure what's in it and I'm sure nothing's added, it's pure, it's natural.

Things I avoid: Mineral oil (codename: Baby oil), heat (I'm a total, no hair driers, no straighteners, no curling irons, no flat irons, no hot combs...nada), sodium chloride

Growing plan: At least 6 inches longer in a year.
