I'm a guy with really curly hair and I need a haircut.

I guess I'm more of a 3c although I'm a 4a-4b every time I wake up in the morning. (I get bad bed-head) Anyways my hair is about 8 inches long all around although it still looks almost the same as it did when it was 2 inches long. But sometimes lately I'll look at my head from the side and it looks kind of square or block shaped. It also looks like it hangs down a little too far in the back. But from the front it looks perfect. I really just discovered I've had this curly hair about a year ago because all my life I've cut my hair really short, so I'm not used to getting haircuts with this length of hair. I'm 21 now by the way. Well I'm just curious about hair salons and haircuts. I want to eliminate the block shape but I also want to keep continuing to grow my hair out. I don't know anything about haircuts and I'm not sure what layers are or what they would do for me. I don't part my hair at all either. Does anyone have any kind of recomendation for me to eliminate my block head? And also, I am caucasian, but I believe my hair is very similar to African - American hair, so would I be better off going to a salon that specializes with African-American hair?
"When you die, if you go somewhere where they ask you a bunch of questions about your life and what you learned and all, I think a good way to get out of it is just to say, "No speaka English."
I think that you could go to a stylist that specializes in cutting curly hair. Like Johnathon Torch. You could most certainly call a salon and specify what you are looking for. There is nothing wrong with going to an African American barbershop if you feel that they would have more expertise in your hair type. But whatever you do make sure that before you pick a stylist or barber that you have a consultation and discuss what you would like to achieve. And I would also ask for pictures of some of their work.

You could look at some magazines and look for a curly style that fits your face shape and texture. The two places I have found that do TERRIBLE haircuts is Great Clips or Fantastic Sams. They normally ( I won't say all) have no idea what to do with tightly curled hair. So X them right off the list.

You might want to check out the Curly Hair Solutions website. They have a link where you can get in touch with someone to see who is certified to do the official Johnathon Torch haircut in your area. The number to reach them is 416-362-1068. You can also look at the web-site to see the photo gallery and tips on how to work with curly hair. The site is www.frizzoff.com

I hope this helps. I too am learning how to deal with these curls. LOL!!!

Let us know how it goes!!!!
Righteousness isn't what you do it's a gift!

I'm still trying to find out what my hair type is!!
how about an ethnic salon (non african american)? most african american stylists havent a clue about natural hair care, unless its a specialty and even then, curly hair is an enigma. ive had great hair cutting experiences w african (egyptian), latino, and indian stylists.
ETA: you're in chicago so i can direct you to a few stylists
loose 4a, silky meets cottony
routine: co-wash, add leave in or plain water, shake & go
staples: elucence poo & conditioners, V05 & suave naturals, jessicurl too shea, AO.
