What are your routines? New Poster here!

Hi there!

I'm new to this board and was wondering about the following:
1. What is the CG routine exactly?
2. Do you co-wash your hair every day?
3. What are some of the products you use?

It seems as if I am forever fighting with my hair.

Hi Draupadi, welcome!

Basically the CG routine is not washing your hair with SLS (sulfate shampoo). Instead you use conditioner to cleanse your scalp/hair with. Because your not using SLS, you also don't use cones.

The whole point is to make/keep your hair as healthy as possible, that way it looks as best as possible.

I co-wash every 3-4 days, and use a conditioner/epsom salt scrub once a week.

The products I use for a fail-safe good hair day, not to mention 2nd and 3rd hair days, are in my sig. line. They're in order of how I put them on too.

This is a link from Sweetpeacali's web page that i've found extremely helpful.

Thank you!
My hair is driving me mad!
I just started using the Devacurl No Poo cleanser (2 times so far) and I do like it.
I used a conditioner from Marc Anthony (Strictly Curls) mixed with another co- Oyin's Honey Hemp Conditioner.
Then I used Oyin's Shine and Define.
It's working okay, but I want more defined curls and less shrinkage.

Your welcome!

I use Dove curl defining styling creme for definition. I got it at wal-mart for under $3!

To help with the shrinkage you could try clipping your hair on the bottom to weigh hair down. If that doesn't help this is a link for a more involved routine you could try.

Here is my routine:

Routine Posted/Updated: 1/12/05Season (if applicable): Fall/Winter
Hair Type: 3c curls, fine texture, mid-back length when wet, nape of neck length when dry (in other words, MAJOR shrinkage)
Condition: Overall healthy, protein sensitive
Gender/Age: Girl, Age 3

Current products:
Tigi Moisture Maniac Conditioner
Elucense MBC
ORS Lock n' Twist Gel
Curls hair tea ecstacy
Lustrasilk Right on Curl Activator
Cream Of Nature Shampoo
Avocado Oil

CURRENT ROUTINE

PM
Hair generally gets wet in the bath everyday. I use a glob of Tigi Moisture Maniac condish (or Elucense MBC, I alternate the two, I think Tigi gives better slip on wet hair) , work it into hair that has had the water squeezed out of it, section the hair and comb through with a Mebco detangling comb, working from ends to roots. I do a quick dunk in tub to rinse, but I don't rinse until it is squeaky, I leave some in. Squeeze excess water from hair with hands. This takes about 5 minutes. Sometimes I just put the conditioner and dunk and skip the combing. It depends on how tangled her hair is to start.

Then we go sit in front of the TV (gasp!) and I put about a Hershey's Kiss size dollop of either Moisture Maniac or Elucense MBC into the hair, work it through and then section and comb with the Mebco comb.
I try to either put it into french braids or regular braids, 2 or 4 of them. This takes about 20 minutes. I'm just learning to french braid so I'm slow.

Then off to bed. We don't use a satin pillowcase or anything, half the time she chooses to sleep on the floor. No pillow or anything.

AM
I undo the braids and add some avocado oil to my hands, smooth it through her hair, spray it damp with a spray bottle filled with water, conditione and brush the canopy with a boar bristle brush and either make ponys or braids. This takes less than 5 minutes.

OR
I spray it damp with a spray bottle filled with water, conditioner and glycerine, spray it damp and smooth over the hair a dime plus size of the right on curl activator. Then style.

If she wants to wear her hair down, I have to re-wet it with a spray bottle mixed with conditioner, re-section and finger comb. I add ORS Lock n' Twist for curl definition. This takes about 10 minutes.

By the way, when she sleep with her hair "Out", my morning routine takes almost a 1/2 hour. Her hair gets matted and is a disaster in the morning. Also, if I let her wear her hair down multiple days in a row, it gets a lot harder to manage and detangle. She almost never wearsr her hair loose and free anymore. It's quite long.
Barely wavy mommy to a fine, silky with thready corkscrew 4 1/2yr old girl. HG's Moisture Maniac, PM The Conditioner, Cactus leave-in (original formula)"Mommy I want to look like a lion!" = hair loose and flowin'.
I think I'm mostly worried about wetting my hair everyday (as it used to cause extreme dryness or tangles).
Now I wet it every other or every two days.
I've only just started on this routine (1 month without pooing but have only recently given up 'cones) and am just trying to see what works for me.
So far...it's just okay.
The past couple of days, I've been using pure coconut oil in my hair which seems to be nourishing it.
How long did it take ya'll to see results?
It seems as if most folks don't really see a big change for a few weeks.

Krazycurls,
I've been addicted to buying hair products. What a junkie!
I'll try the Dove brand since it's inexpensive...
Thanks!

Vivasmom,
I braid my hair when I sleep and sleep in a silk scarf to protect my hair (even though I do have a satin pillow case, this does seem to help a lot).

Your daughter is lovely btw!

My Routine:

Wash once a week with shampoo. Mainly a clarifying shampoo.

Detangle everyday with Hawaiian Silky 14 in 1 and apply Hawaiin Silky Creme Moist Curl Activator in sections.

Twice a week, wet hair fully and detangle with Elucence MBC, followed by the same products above.

That's pretty much it. No Gels and No Deep Conditioners.
Short 4A Hair.
My routine for my mostly 3C hair is to follow CG method. I find that CG works really well for me and has made my hair shiny with great curl definition and minimum frizz.

Towards that end, I cleanse twice a week with either Suave Aloe or Coconut conditioner. During the last cleansing, I put one of those conditioninc caps on my head for 5 - 10 minutes to allow the conditioner to really sink in. This also aids in detangling.

I then rinse and leave some of the conditioner in my hair. I gently towel dry my hair with a micro fiber towel. I apply the lavender rinse, and a leave in in conditioner and then apply the Kinky Curly Custard product. Following that, I apply a small dollop of Suave Aloe Vera gel and apply lightly to the outer layer of my hair to cut down on frizz. I apply clips strategically in my hair to get some lift and then I air dry.

At night, I put a satin cap over my head and in the morning I spray my head with the lavender spray to revive the curls, shake my head and off I go.

Really simple with minimal fuss.
If you've completely given up shampoo and cones, and are strictly cg, it'll probably take 2 weeks to see real results. I know it seems like a long time but in the end you'll be happy with much healthier hair.

I know what you mean about being a pj! Before I went cg, I had a shampoo, a conditioner, and a gel. That's it! Now I have 5-6 gels, different products for frizz, curl definition, not to mention conditioners! In the end it's all worth it though!!
