Colouring

Anybody with corcscrew (preferably black) coloured their hair (permanent) ? I wana hear your experiences ! Any damage, change to curls? I have a few grey hairs (im only 23) and I am reluctant to colour it all at the salon, in fear of damage. I want to dye it brown because I think curly hair looks great when its a light colour rather than black.

My only other alternative is to buy a home kit and dye the individual hair strands if I look very carefully!
From my experience, it is better to color your hair at home. I colored my hair at home several times when I was younger and my hair was fine. It was still soft and curly. The first (and last) time I went to a salon, it totally messed up my hair. It is now dry and brittle. My hair doesn't curl at all now.

That is my experience but get a few more opinions just to be on the safe side.

don't be afraid of color. artificial color can actually make your texture feel soft and your hair super shiny! dont color it yourself at home, the scary thing about drug store brands is you dont know how strong they are. unfortunately they tend to be VERY strong (at least a 40volume developer, which means ALOT of ammonia hydroxide) which will ravage your delicate strands. leave it to professionals. do a search for high end Aveda salons in your area (Aveda color is 97% plant-derived and has some of the lowest peroxide content out there) pick out a few salons that seem nice and schedule a few consultations with stylists (theyre free) have a chat and really figure out what is best for you and your curls.
Wow. Two very different opinions there! I'm interested to know, do you two both have dry corcscrew curls? (3C / 4A).

I live in the UK I'm not sure if there are any Aveda salons here! But will look around.

More experiences pleassssseeeee!
My hair is naturally very very dark. Wont' say black because stylist will say no one can have black hair. But, if it is a color then I have black hair. I did a hair show and had 8 inches of hair cut off and had it dyed brown. I will never do it again. It didn't damage it per say. However, it seemed dry. The thing I love about having "black" hair is that it always has a sheen to it....at least imo. I've never had to use oils in my hair at all just shampoo and conditioner. Now I no longer use shampoo and just use conditioner and I added coconut oil for the shine I no longer have. I would suggest using Henna instead since it has more benefits!

Hi Curly_Wurly!

My hair is 3c/4a.

For at-home coloring, there are products without ammonia. I believe Clairol Natural Instincts is one of them. I have used Garnier Nutrisse in the past and it came out really nice. If you do go to a salon, ask them about the products that they use. I'm sure that you can find a salon that has safe products. I wish you the best with whatever you decide. I'm sure it will be beautiful.

i have used bigen (oriental black) , because i have black hair(born in brazil) but the sun lightens it in the summer. it is a chemical free dye and it left my dry frizzy hair soft and shiny.

I hope the exit is joyful and I hope never to return-Frida Kahlo
i LOVE color!
my curls stay colored and i probably do the harshest of the harsh. my hair is naturally off black and in the summer i have it lifted to a brown with gold or blonde highlights. then in the fall i take it to a more chocolate brown. i have no damage and my curls are still 3c/4a.
for my color treated hair the key to health is:
- going to a professional who speacializes in color. just because you go to a salon, doesnt mean your stylists knows more about color than you do. go to someone who knows color! plus i hate the monotone generic look of box color...
- do protein treatments to keep hair strong and deep conditioning treatments to combat dryness. i usually do them a bit more frequently right before i know im going to get color and right after i get color.
Im a stylist that works specifically with curls and neither clairol or garnier are ammonia free.
Hilstylescurls,

What products, other than Aveda, would you recommend for coloring? You are a professional so, maybe you can help us out.

Hi. I just recently colored my hair after debating forEVER. I too was afraid of what the chems would do. But low and behold, I used a box color (several boxes actually -several times- I know, bad....) and my hair is actually curlier! I have 3c/4a hair and my crown hair was very limp and straight prior to coloring. I was especially worried about that! But now even my crown hair is curlier!! My hair is black -very, very dark and hard to lift. So I initially went easy on it for fear of damage, but eventually had to use a hi-lift blond to get results. And even with all of that, I still have soft, curlier hair. My advice is to do plenty DTs before and after (like Subbrock said) because it does help. If you're comfortable with the simple colors of box kits then go for it. If you do your research and find a good colourist (not just a good salon) then that may be for you as well.

Good luck! Go for it!!

i love to colour my hair just because it makes my hair feel super soft and it loosens my curls a little bit. I'm probably gonna go colour my hair today.

Well if damage is what you're worried about, then you should try a henna treatment then follow it up with and immediate indigo treatment to achieve a very rich black. Most people aren't aware of the range of color they can get using henna. The shine and the volume benefits are definitely a plus and you don't have to worry about it destroying your hair. I've been using henna for 4 months and am seeing excellent results. Check out these sites for info.

My hair is naturally black and I used an at home Garnier permanent brown dye (it's called "cocoa bean") and it worked quite well.

My hair hasn't been damaged at all, and the color shows quite well.

If you only have a few grays you could use the DemiPermanent called Viviance a level three would be dark enough and you can decide what tone you want when you see the color chart at the salon. You can find a salon that uses this color at www.schwarzkopfusa.com. This is a color that thinks it's a conditioner and it blends away up to 60% gray. This line has a lightner that is very gentle to curls also (no thio) cream bleach. The best thing about Viviance is that it doesn't leave a line of demarcation as the hair grows out either, and the shine is incredible. Professional stylists, like myself are not the enemy as some curlies here believe, we educate ourselves and want to give you the most beautiful hair possible. A professional is your best bet, choose wisely, get referrals, if you see someone with pretty color ASK where they get it done and communicate your desired end result, use pictures so you have a frame of refrence. Black to you could be dark brown to me. If you have any other questions, let me know.
