I have short (several inches above the shoulder) 3c hair and I'm trying to find a gel that is non-sticky/non-crunchy, etc. I'm currently using John Frieda curly gel and it works well, but I'm afraid that it's causing me to break out. Does anyone have suggestions for a gel that does not cause breakouts?
Someone also suggested that it might be my conditioner. I'm using Aussie Moist conditioner and I think I'm rinsing thoroughly enough. Does anyone have experience with this kind of conditioner causing breakouts?

I like Fantasia IC clear gel. Also Kinky Curly Curling Custard, though it's not a traditional gel.

I've never tried the Aussie conditioner. Does it have silicone? It could still be drying out your hair even if you rinse thoroughly due to it coating the hair shaft.

I like Giovanni LA natural Hard hold gel (it's not hard hold). Very nice and non crunchy. Also Theraneem Leaf and Aloe Vera gel, and Kinky Curly Curly Custard. these all combine well too. I'm also trying out Sebastian Stylixir.

I like Long Aid Activator gel mixed with a little bit of KCCC for hold. The Long Aid doesn't make my hair crunchy at all.

I'd been using Qhemet Honeybush Tea Soft Gel, but I've found it only works when I put my daughter's hair back - when I leave her hair down, it just doesn't have enough hold.

I'm looking for something new, too. :/

I second the giovani LA gel--it says its a hard hold but it really isnt--it hold the hair well without making it crunchy. My only problem is i cant but it on my entire head because it makes my hair way too glossy which makes it hard to crunch after my hair is dry. I like to put it on areas that need a bit of extra hold, like my bangs(where my curls are very loose) and the tight spot on the back of my head. I put this on after i use my v05 as a leave in--I just bought it about a week ago so im still trying to figure out the best way to use it.

Ya know what works best for me at the moment?

Take a half jar of curl activator gel (fantasia IC, long-aid)...melt down some shea butter and coconut oil and mix it in until it's a creamy consistency. The moisture and curl-popping I get is amazing. You can even add a little honey or your fav conditioner. It's my new fav hairdress.

Next gel I buy I'm going to melt down some cocoa butter, and order some others like mango butter or avocado butter.

I'm testing this one out today. Applied it to damp hair with a little oil. We'll see how it does when my hair dries..

Plus I'm going to NY in a few days, and I'm not sure if my current regimen will work there. It should because it gets pretty humid there too (I'm in So. FL), but I just have to wait and see..

Wash: Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castille Soap.
Conditioner: Tigi Bedhead Moisture Maniac/Suave Humectants
Moisturizers: Long Aid
Styler: Ecostyler Clear/ Vitamin E Oil

Yes, me the gel hater is now testing out gels.. lol

I got the LA Looks Cashmere Curls at Family Dollar for about $2. It's a 6 oz. squeeze bottle, and I tried it for an overnight braid out. This gel isn't very crunchy at all which I like. I raked and combed it through and let my two braids dry. Then in the AM I undid the braids, fluffed and separated, and so far so good. Shocking. I may even have to try this out for the rest of the week to see how it does in a wash n go.

I also deep conditioned yesterday with Suave Tangerine condish and shea butter so my hair is VERY moisturized, and possibly this is why there is so little crunch to the gel.

The only gels I recommend would be the Fructis gels.

Yes, maybe it is the coonditioner. Just make sure that you don't get conditioner on your skin while doing your hair in the shower. When your curls are set then make sure that you pin them back somehow to keep them out of your face.

Maybe you should try the cheaper solutions first before you spend lots of $$
