Best Products for 3B curls

For the longest time I've just been mixing and matching random products like shampoos that aren't necesarily for curly hair and the same with conditioners. Lately I've noticed that my hair looks tired and dull.

So I'm wondering if you guys could give me advice on the bests shampoos, conditioners (leave-in or not), gels, mouse, or any other products for 3B hair.

And also, gel or mouse? Which do you think works the best for our hair type?

Thanks!
A lot of this depends specifically on you and your hair. Is your hair fine or coarse, are you having any issues with your curls? ie. limpness/ droopy, stringy, poofy, lack of definition, etc.

I'd recommend finding your "hair twin" and checking out the products they have had success with.

Many 3B's are happy using either the entire Devacurl line (No Poo, One C, Angell & Set It Free) or the entire Jessicurl line. But there are plenty of happy 3B's who mix and match products from Walmart/ drugstore.

It's all about finding what works with your hair. I'd recommend checking out the product reviews forum for some more ideas. Hope that helps.
~3b/a - fine~
water wash or Aubrey's shampoo, Aubrey's Island Naturals + honey condition everyday, ACV cold rinse (as needed), Coconut milk leave-in (2-3 week), flax seed gel + Aubrey's Mandarin Magic gel, plop

And are you CG or not?

I'm not CG and my hair is coarse and thick and I'm having trouble with frizz
You may just think your hair is coarse when in reality its not (which is what happened to me). Most curly hair is fine (surprising) and its just lacking moisture. You MUST use moisturizing products like weekly deep treatments, conditioners and leave- ins to prevent frizz and keep your hair healthy. The CG routine helps keep hair healthy b/c its against alcohols and silicones that dry hair out over time.

Definitely start shampooing less- this helped me tremendously. There is no reason to shampoo your hair more than once or twice a week (unless you have an oily scalp). This website is the place to find out what products are right for your hair. So peak around and see what people are saying and doing. Then check out the product reviews section to make a choice.

Ouidad- Curl Quencher Poo/Dish, CHS Curl Keeper, Innersense Sweet Spirit and QCCC, Climate Control Gel, Tress F/X, Redken Fresh Curls Spray Gel
These are products that I currently use on my naturally dry 3b curls and have been getting consistently great results. I use Curls Cleansing Cream, Curls Goddess Glaze, and Curls Asian Hair Tea Conditioner. The Cleansing Cream is the best hair cleanser that I have ever come across so far. The Asian Hair Tea Conditioner detangles my hair perfectly, and the Goddess Glaze gives my curls the right amount of hold and they last all day without me having to re-apply more.

Hi there SYB,

Where do you get the three products you use? Does it leave your hair touchable or crunchy? Is humidity a problem where you are? My hair is very thick and shoulder length. I live one block from the beach in NC so humidity is a HUGE problem with me. I usually end up pulling my hair back in a ponytail.

Next on my list of products to try is BRHG and Devaone conditioner (after that I'm going for Ouidad). I want well defined curls but preferably not crunchy, though at this point I will do anything to control the frizz. Currently I use Suave Toasted Vanilla shampoo (or my baby's shampoo) about twice a week (I know I need to back off on that), then leave in Suave Toasted Vanilla conditioner. I started doing a once a month routine of water and baking soda for buildup and the other day I saturated my hair with a honey/water combo that I didn't rinse out. I then used V05 power control gel and by 11am my hair was huge. From what I'm reading on this site I think my main problem is lack of moisture. I currently don't do any deep treatments and I am inconsistent with the honey/water. Another major problem of mine is the hair that rubs against my shoulders and back gets really puffy. I can't seem to find a gel that holds all day with this humidity, though if I gave my hair enough moisture I'd probably get better hold with any gel I used, am I right?

Another thing is that I run in the evenings so I shower at night. I have been "pineappling" my hair overnight which has been highly successful. It looks gorgeous in the morning! However, as the morning wears on the frizz grows.

What are your thoughts, ladies? I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Peg

P.S. I do have Lorraine Massey's book but it is packed up since I'm moving at the end of the month so I don't have any of her deep treatment recipes.

I keep seeing this word pineappling. What exactly is that?
Pineappling is where you dip your head upside down, gather all the hair together and put in a rubberband. Like a ponytail on the top of your head. Believe me, once you flip your head back up you will understand the name. My husband said it looked like my head was exploding.

...what I do to get nice hair!!!!!!!!!!

And the end of the day , all you've got is yourself..
Imagotto2, you can find all of the products at curls.biz. I have been using Curls products for several months now. I sometimes use other products too, but now as of late I have only been using the products that I mentioned. The 3 products that I spoke of leave my hair touchable and not crunchy or stiff in any way. With the Cleansing Cream, I have even gone without using a conditioner afterwards and still had no problems. Which is something that I have never been able to do before.

Yes, I do live in a very humid state(Louisiana) and I have had no problems so far with my hair even showing the slightest bit of frizz since I started this new regimen. I can wear my hair down with no problems at this point.

imagatto, you've got lots of choices and good advice here. I live in a climate of extreme humidity, we're talking 90% year round. If it falls to 70% it seems dry.

First thing I'd do is upgrade your condish. Suave isn't a bad choice, but I know I notice a difference when I try to get cheap here. I stick with Deva One C myself, and Curls Asian Hair Tea and Jessicurl are good choices too; they just don't give me the detangling and softening I get from One C. If I'm really trying to economize, the closest I've found is Fructis Dry & Damaged. It has more amodimethicone than One C, but the Fine formula has less. It's under $5 and the only drugstore condish I've found I've ever bought twice.

You can go cheap on gel, strangely enough. A lot of folks like LA Looks for a harder hold, and F/X Curl gel is decent. I personally like Herbal Essence Humidity Defying gel. I apply it right in the shower after I've wrung water from my hair, before I blot with a towel. You can add more gel afterward if you want to, but gel in soaking wet hair is the single biggest factor for frizz control I've found.

This happens to me as well on 2nd day hair days. I use CHS Curl Keeper and Biosilk RHG mixed in my palms with some water to dilute and smooth it over the surface of my hair in a downward motion all over my head. Then I use the same concoction and scrunch a bit into the ends that are dry and frizzy. I also, fingercurl with BRHG and some water any curls that fuzzed out over night.

Sleeping with your pineapple on a silk or satin pillowcase will help as well.

Better everyone think your a fool, than to open your mouth and prove them right.

Perception is not reality.

I think, depending on 3B texture (spongy, silky, cottony, etc.) DevaCurl and Curl Junkie are the best product lines.

AG Re:coil is a great styler but is drying over time.

Gryantmarch2step, yes the Cleansing Cream and Goddess Glaze are CG! The only other product that I would about sugest you trying too from the Curls line is Curls Milkshake. This stuff makes my curls really soft everyime I use it. And it can be used solely as a leave-in moisturizer/styling lotion, or it can be layered.

I tred the milkshake yesterday and it made my hair soooo soft! I tried the souffle today and it seemed to elongate my curls. I used B&A gel over it.
