Coloring Your Curls? Pro/Againts? Best Brand?

Hello curlies! I am considering coloring my hair. When i first went natural (back when I didn't know how to care for my hair) I colored my hair, but I experienced dryness. When I grew it out, I had split ends where the color was.

Now I want to go back to color. Does any one have any recommendations on what brands to use and how to take care of it once its colored?

And PLEASE (pretty ) PLEASE post pics of your colored hair. I want ideas.

I heard Aveda is really good hair color because it is all natural. You could look into some Aveda salons. I didn't go to Aveda to get my hair colored. I have had my hair colored 2 times this year.

I think two toned is super fly on curly hair..the top half light and keep the back half your natural tone. Highlights are cool as well. I have highlights on the top half of my hair and my bottom half is still dark brown/black. If you get highlights, you might want to get them a little chunkier than usual because highlights can get lost in curly hair.

I have some different hair color ideas on my blog if you want to see pics.

i say go to a professional colorist.

ive had aveda color once before but other than that time ive had redken color. my favorite color is the combo of what alexisnicole mentioned--two toned hair + highlights. every pic i have in my fotki is of my hair colored (various colors). to avoid dryness and damage i do dt's frequently the week before i get the color done. then after i have the color continue to do agreesive dt's as well as a protein treatment once a week. after about two weeks i still try to do my dt's once a week and then do protein treatments once a month. i also use products with protein to keep my hair strong.

jumping on the Aveda train. I attempted highlights earlier this year, using Aveda color from a concept salon. What's cool about them is that their color is 97% natural (whatever that means) and they have a wide assortment of light browns and reds to choose from without bleaching your hair.

That was March. By mid April my highlights was gone. The colorist warned me of this, though. That particular line of color doesn't take on previously henna/indigoed hair...which is what happened in my case, i guess.

and yes, curls look amazing with color! I'm so jealous of you ladies with two toned hair. I want it!

Good luck! If dryness isn't a major concern now, I say go for it.

Hi ladies, We use Schwartzkopf color in our salon, it has the lowest amonia and leaves your hair so shiny. A lot of the time the dryness occurs if the stylist pulls the retouch color with the peroxide in it through the ends. This is a no no. We use something called personality throughout the mid-lengths and ends which is amonia free and deposits color only. Once the hair is lightened it doesn't need to be lightened again just refreshed, the same for darker hair. They have the only sodium thyo glycolate (found in straightener) FREE cream lightner that will give you glossy hilights. The other brands will straighten your curls. They have a web site, good luck
I've read only good things about Robert Craig color. I don't color anymore, but I do use their Clear every few months to boost shine. It's definitely gentle on my hair.
