question about hair type: 2c or 3a?

Like Tree6Likes

After a week of obsessive researching on this site I have finally decided to go CG. I just did my last suphate wash today and took some pics with little product in my hair. Although you cant really tell from these pics my hair is extremely dry and frizzy so I'm hoping going CG will reduce the frizz and enhance the curl. I know it doesn't effect my hair care routine but I was wondering if I am a 2c or 3a?

i'm a have to say 3a. but i'm newer to this so who knows. your hair looks like mine when it's longer
Looks like 2c but if you are just starting CG method then overtime your hair should get healthier and curlier overtime. Thats what happened to me i went from a 2c to 3a once my curls got their memory back and I followed the CG routine.
Only a 2c from some of the other posters? I'd say mostly 3a with some 2c myself. On a GOOD day my hair could look like yours does now. Modified CG(co-wash with a sulfate-free shampoo from time to time)did work for me for a few years, but not right now.

I agree, your lovely locks look about like a 2b.
I would not get caught up on a number, but rather love your hair for itself.
You are a classic 2. Type 3 is a different look and type 3 hair has different needs and issues. One of your issues might be desiring tighter waves and curls. Type 3s generally focus on slightly different issues.
Your waves are gorgeous, and the envy of many. Appreciate them and don't think they need to be changed in to curls just because of the site name. I also have 2b or 2a hair now although my few random waves are nothing like yours unless I use curlformers. So celebrate your 2b hair and how beautiful it is. I honestly do not think it would be more attractive if it were 3a instead

My Routine:
Coconut oil drench the night before I co-wash
then cowash and deep condition each time w/ Keracare Humecto, Joico Moisture Recovery and/or ApHogee 2min
then usually airdry
Grapeseed oil nightly

(no gel, mouse, or hair spray. My delicate, fine hair will tear if I even try to run my fingers through it with any of those. )
My go to leave ins are now: my regular conditioners listed above, gs oil, or PW77

I'd call it 2c mosty 3a. You have complete spiraling. 2s get very little complete spiraling. I do like the new Ouidad site and their classifications. In which you would fall into "classic curls".

The reason I say largely 3a, more on the curly side, is the "whole curl" thing, which will probably improve with more of a handle on what works for your hair properties.

2s of all kinds just don't get a lot of complete spirals. OTOH, I can see a real mix here. It's just that with so much actual curl, I couldn't call you wavy. However more important are your hair properties, because frankly, there are different wave patterns who can have similar properties. There are products that work across the board depending on what your hair likes. Otherwise, my wimpy wave wouldn't adore Camille Rose, for instance, or WonderCurl products. So, maybe look more at your porosity (look up Goosefootprints on Etsy), weight, elasticity, porosity to find what works best for you.
