no comb or brush...I finger comb when I co-wash However my hair doesn't really get knots or tangles...I guess the detanglers I use must be working....Combing and Brushing only gives me the frizzies

I usually comb once per week, when I co-wash on the weekend. When I work out during the week, I'll add another co-wash mid-week, but I will most likely not comb that time. I have collarbone-length 3c/4a hair, and this has worked for me.

My hair is much thicker and a different texture than when i first posted in this thread.. I finger comb now i think i've combed my hair(with a comb) 3 times in the last 2 months or so... I use detangler in the shower though and wet my hair just about everyday and when I do use a comb surprisingly its not very tangled...

If my hair isn't already styled, I will detangle it in the shower with tons and tons of conditioner. I usually will part it into four and then section it off with hair bands and detangle very slowly... so it takes me a while. I don't comb my hair when it's dry... that's just asking for a problem... especially at my length.

I don't understand. I comb in the shower only and it's to detangle.

I realized recently that if I don't comb every time I co-wash, my curls stay more intact.

It takes me two days(I take breaks) to detangle my hair sometimes because my hair gets very matted and tangled (I didn't have a good brush to take out all of the tangles out of my hair).

I just got the denman d1431(It is a widely spaced freeflow denman brush.Small size.My hates the denman styling brush like the denman D4) brush which is the best brush I ever used because it clumps my curls with conditioner in my hair(I detangle on damp hair\dry hair).I'm going to detangle my hair once a week now.I might used the brush during the week when I apply product to my hair.

Edit: I never knew that I could find a brush that could clump my curls.

i use to comb my hair in the shower, but it just ended up clogging up the shower, and i figured i was wasting a lot of water. so now i just comb after i get out. it usually takes like 15-30 minutes, i have long hair, and i have low tolerence for pain.
but yeah i have to comb everytime i get out of the shower or else it would be like dreds...

I'm not the OP but I too have serious tangle issues. Thanks everyone for all the advice!

Protective nighttime styles are the way to go it seems!

I have hip length hair and I comb every day but I do not nedd to have it soaking wet and full of conditioner just for daily touch up combing. I do comb with conditioner when I wash. Since I use mineral oil, I only need to spray my hair with wawith a little water to get the aid I need for daily detangling. Gg. I use a wide tooth wooden comb but I finger comb first. Tighter curl patterns actually tangle less than looser hair. My hair would be full of tangles and knots if I did not have some safe way to detangle wet or dry. I do not prefer the co-washing method because in my opinion all that does is create build up. You are not fully washing off previoys product then slapping on more the next day when yet hair is not designed to take that much product.

I like to wash off previous oil first with shampoo before applying more unless I feel I have not added enough. My hair does not do well with wash and go's anyhow because I get crazy knots. I have never gotten them to work well for me. Either I wait until my hair is almost dry and comb the oil thru or I braid it loosely when damp.

I tend to like the volume of combing with a spray bottle as my hair is long. Still my wash and go curls are beautiful I wish they dud not come with knots! Ugh

Here was my post: Any type 4's that don't comb their hair

I'm a type 4, but right now I comb my hair probably once a month unless I am doing some type of special styling where my hair shaft has to be ultra smooth. I do finger detangle lightly on wash day (once per week). I think this has helped me with length retention.

This ritual has resulted in me only having to detangle about once every 2 weeks or so. Even then, the comb only comes into play if I can't get the knot out using my fingers and I do this when my hair is wet and full of slippery conditioner.

I used to comb my hair once a week (whether tangles were present or not). No matter how gentle I was or how much conditioner I used, I kept seeing little broken hairs all over the floor after my once a week combing sessions. Using the comb only when tangles are present and when my fingers can't fix it, has SIGNIFICANTLY reduced breakage.
This is me now!!! Glad to see this is working for you. I'm going to continue this way too. I was also having the same issues.

Every 2-3 days. Depends on when I wet and condition my hair in the shower because I only detangle when my hair is wet and has conditioner in it. I finger detangle most of the time but maybe once my hair is longer, I may switch to my wide tooth comb. Finger detangling is just better for me.

I just finger-detangle. And only when I'm in the shower and have conditioner in my hair!

I'm the furthest thing from being a 4 but even as a 2b/2c, I love this topic. First of all, I saw your album and my goodness, I love your hair. It looks gorgeous.

When I first started wearing my hair longer I did everything from blow-dry using a round styling brush and sometimes curling iron but found that took way too long. I pretty much just co-wash and finger tousle now and have been much happier. I almost never use a comb or brush but on the rare occasion I do come I use my pick, the same one you see in my hair now. Just proud that I am loving my curls after all these years of resisting them.

I detangle twice a week (when I wash) with my fingers. It takes about fifteen minutes to wash, detangle and style (I do all this in the shower) my MBL hair.

I don't really use a comb in my hair when detangling. I finger detangle for the most part. Rarely will I detangle with a wide tooth comb.
