When I wore my hair in a fro, it seemed to grow a total of about two inches in four years (I kid you not). It was growing but I guess it was just breaking off as fast as it grew, plus shrinkage. It never seemed to look significantly longer. Since I locked it up its growing like you wouldn't believe. It went from very short to shoulder length in an extremely short period of time. The only thing I'm doing differently is not combing it.
