Henna= loss of curl?

I'm thinking about trying henna because my hair is breaking, which is rare for my hair. I want to try it for the thickening/volumizing and softness.

On the other hand though, i have been hearing that it loosens your curl pattern. I have tight 3c curls, with some 4a at the crown and I like my hair and the curls the way they are. Will repeated use of the henna treatment dramatically loosen my curl pattern?

From what I've read(from curly nikki's site and the sticky), henna is great for thickening up your hair, crazy softness, shine and could possible elongate the curl- but I believe there are different types that wont stretch the curls. HTH and you should check out curlynikki.com, hennaforhair and the henna sticky in the 4a forum for in depth information concerning henna because I am so not an expert and would hate to give you the wrong information. henna loosened my curls and that was one of the reasons i stopped using it. after only two applications of it, my hair was noticebly looser and i wasnt comfortable with that at all. so not only does it vary from what kind of henna you use, but it also varies from head to head.

I was attracted to henna specifically because I heard that it loosened the curls. I've just completed my 3rd henna and couldn't be happier! My 3c's are still 3c's (I think?) but aren't as tightly coiled and I have waves in some areas--but no curl loss.

However, those with two different curls patterns on the same head may disagree. For example, if you haven't BC'd and still have a bit of relaxer on the ends, the henna will be more noticable on the relaxed part in terms of 'curl loss.' While I was transitioning (no BC for me--cut off a little at a time), I was more concerned with my relaxed ends than my new growth... I scrunched and scrunched to get it to curl, so I can understand how someone would be disappointed with henna and call it 'curl loss' rather than 'curl loosening.'

This was the only example I could think of, but I hope you get the picture. HTH

Hi, I henna once a month and found that the loose curls does not last long. After a couple of washings, my curls are back to normal.

If you do decide to henna in the future, please, please, please, do a moisturizing dc afterwards. Henna is healthy for the hair, but I have found that it can be a little drying as well.

Bunny is so right ... I'm on my third and my curls came back after a few washes .. I love the red color (my hair was a lighter color before henna ) I get and the benefits .. and as bunny said please DC after ..

Did you have a problem switching back to regular color after doing the henna?

No..

But, if your hair is feeling a bit damaged, once/as it gets healthier and longer, your curls will become more enhanced and/or stretched...

Deep treatments and henna treatments sound like a good plan.

ITA... You can also use Amla (http://www.hennaforhair.com/faq/amla/) mixed in with the henna to help retain your curl....

I'm dipping my toes back into the henna pool. I received my order from Mehandi this week, and plan to henna over the coming weekend. I haven't hennaed in about a year, so I think armed with much more information this time around things might turn out better than before.

Henna doesn't loosen mine at all, if anything it's a little curlier, but I always used amla in my mix just in case (past tense because now I'm just doing light henna/indigo glosses - too little henna for too short a time to affect the curl).

Hi, I henna about once every 3 -4 weeks and have been doing so for about 9 months now. I don't think my curls have loosened -- at least nothing permanent or particularly noticeable. Overall, I think the henna has contributed to the health of my hair as I've transitioned. I also use indigo however, and indigo is drying, so I have to really condition, condition, condition.

I've been hennaing for over a month now one treatment per week. I did notice a slight loss of curl in the front of my hair where my curl was already naturally loose. I incorporated Amla the last two treatments to combat it and it handled the issue. I'm going to add it every other treatment because I do want to loosen my curls a little and it also darkens your hair which I also like. Be sure you deep condition. Amla can be even more drying than Henna. But I have to tell you. Henna is great! I have really fine 3c/4a curls but I have A LOT of hair. I have let it grow really long b4 but it wouldn't be healthy growth from all the stress of detangling and the occassional flat iron press. My hair is much shinier, thicker and softer. When I detangle there is very little hair left in my Denman which means I'm retaining the length. All my products work better because of the Henna. Try it I think you'll like it too.
