Banding Hair... let me see!!

After talking to HennaRo on twitter and she was saying she 'banded' her hair, I have been seeing this all over.

I see its a stretching technique instead of the braiding technique I do to stretch and I saw a member posted pics of her daughters hair but.... the thought of walking around with my hair in ponytails is funny to me, I must admit.... I do want to try it though.

Do I:
Do it on wet hair?
How many to do?
Do I do it every night?
Do I two strand twist it first?
Can I do less on the second night than what I started out with?
Anything else I should know??

Is it better than doing a braidout to stretch(with the braids, I can do a braidout), what style can I do with this?

Anyone have pics of their hair banded, I would love to see.

Do I:
Do it on wet hair?
I suggest you do it on dry hair, because it can snap and break with wet hair.
How many to do?
I would just do as many as you can with all the ponytails being even or around the same size.
Do I do it every night?
Banding isn't permanent, it just stretches it out temporarily.
Do I two strand twist it first?
You can if you want, i don't think it makes much of a difference.
Can I do less on the second night than what I started out with?
I don't understand this question, but you can do however many you want. Lol.
Anything else I should know??
Banding is not permanent, so your hair will revert back to its natural shrinkage when you wash it. Also, banding stretches out your curl pattern, so it might not be as coily/curly when you take the bands off. And your hair might have creases from where the bands were. Hope i helped!!

Ok so I had already typed this out but something happened...so here goes...again...

That was me! (I think) I know wearing your hair banded may seem a little weird but I think it looks cute. Obviously colorful ponytail holders look adorable on the kids. I actually put my hair in a low ponytail last week and banded it and it looked cute. I used navy blue ponytail holders. It switched up my regular ol' ponytail.

Do I:
Do it on wet hair?
Wet or dry. I find dry works best.
How many to do?
About every inch...I think.
Do I do it every night?
Depends on the look you're going for.
Do I two strand twist it first?
No
Can I do less on the second night than what I started out with?
Yes
Anything else I should know??
Braid the ends so it all blends in. I looove using the goody colorful cloth covered ponytail holders. Bought them at Walmart for like $2. They are really easy on the hair.

I was on the banding kick for a while, so here's some pictures of my daughters hair...

Forgot one...

Is it better than doing a braidout to stretch(with the braids, I can do a braidout), what style can I do with this?
I find banding works better at stretching the hair than any other method (braids, twists) but this really depends on what look you're going for. In my experience, banding will give you more of a straight look. I do banding as an actual style in her hair, or I band her hair before I style her hair. Like if I'm going to do two strand twists or braids, depending on the look we're going for, I will band the hair first.

If you're looking for a banded style, I think a banded ponytail would be cute. Or you could do a banded side ponytail and add a nice flower on the top of the ponytail..

Children's Natural Hair Care & Styling Blog:

I typically band beforehand to stretch my hair out for dry styling.

Here's my routine for banding:
-always do it on wet hair
-always seal with an oil and/or soak the bands in oil because banding can be drying to some
-detangle thoroughly before banding in small sections

This is my banded hair before twisting it:

GIRL it will change your LIFE!!! I tried it for styling for the first time this past weekend (thanks Shawnyblazes!!!!!) and ALREADY the changes in my hair include:

1. Not one fairy knot. I mean not one.
2. Length. I went from having a twa, to medium length hair (past my ears!!) overnight. Some people have asked me if I got a kinky afro weave.
3. Easy detangling.
4. This is the key to growth and health for super kinky/curly hair (at least mines)

Here are my answers to some of your questions. Some of them I couldn't answer cause I'm new to banding but I do know this:

Banding + HE conditioners = GREAT hair for Nubiancoils!!!!!

Do it on wet hair?
Yes
How many to do?
Depends on how long your hair is for me. I make about 15 and my hair is a little past ear length
Do I do it every night?
No. I only do it when I wash my hair and I only do that once a week. Once you band, it's like any other form of straightening, you're good until water touches your hair again.
Do I two strand twist it first?
I don't. To band I make ponytails. I might twist the ponytail once or twice to stretch the hair some more, then I put another tie at the end of the ponytail to weigh it down.
Can I do less on the second night than what I started out with?
Anything else I should know??
This is what I did to band and style:
1. On wet/washed hair add leave-in and band
2. Once hair is dry take it down and style
3. For me I styled it by adding a butter, then putting my hair in twists
4. I left the twists in overnight, took them down the next day to have a large chunky fro. If I had wanted more definition, I would have made smaller twists.
5. Every night I twist my hair up before putting a scarf on it. I don't add anything, I just put it in about 10-15 large twists.
6.Take the twists out every morning and fluff

Wow.... I see so many people are doing this... So if I band my hair one night, it will be stretched the next day I take it???

With the braids, its like a 3 day process, where my hair gets more stretched each day to fullness.... but from what it seems you guys are saying, if I band my hair tonight, tomorrow it will be stretched to fullness.

I'm actually going to try this and of course make a video....lol.

Do I:
Do it on wet hair?
I do mine on wet hair in the shower! It is better detangled IMO!

How many to do?
As many as can be done! You can space them out more if you want little puffs (straight but not the extremely straight look) or you can put them closer together for a straighter do! I'd say experiment!

Do I do it every night?
If you wish! It's all left to you!

Do I two strand twist it first?
Doing that can help a little! I guess it would keep the hair detangled or something..

Can I do less on the second night than what I started out with?
However you please!

Anything else I should know??
You can wear this as a style on its own!

Is it better than doing a braidout to stretch(with the braids, I can do a braidout), what style can I do with this?
I guess you can do a "banding out"! ROFL!

Anyone have pics of their hair banded, I would love to see.

Do it on wet hair?
I prefer damp hair, freshly washed, and detangled moisturized and sealed hair...

How many to do?
It has changed with my length, but right now i get the best results with 4 in front and 4 in back, using about 3 bands spreading them down as I wrap them....

Do I do it every night?
No, I band to prep my hair for a twist or braid out

Do I two strand twist it first?
If you prefer that , sure why not...sometimes I braid for a more textured stretch, most of the time I just band my hair loose....

Can I do less on the second night than what I started out with?
Sure why not....

Anything else I should know??
Try not to band at the roots too tight you dont wanna risk pulling your hair out...If you have alot of hair you are gonna have to do more sections so it will dry faster...

Here is pic of a band out I did last week, there are pictures in my fotki showing how I styled it during the week....
Note: I dont usually do it with braids....

From last year, my hair was shorter...I look like a snork

Here is examples of my banded hair. I band my hair while wet, but I make sure to moisturize and seal my ends with shea butter and castor oil.

So many new things to try and not enough time! I have a feeling that banding will suck on my hair though. Every time I try something like this I get crazy results. I guess if it goes horribly wrong I can pull it up in a puff.

Sheesh I never thought to do this to get a great out style! I'm just trying to sorta protect my hair and stick to a regimine.

Seeing all of this is giving me great ideas though!

The last two times I have done it was just after my weekly co-wash/detangle, DT. I did this on wet hair each time. I usually take it out mid week due to frizzies and me just playing with it! But I remoisturize it and then band it right back up.

OMG, so I did this, and my hair was much stretched... I am so happy with the results.... it was easy, my hair was moisturized. This will definitely be in the regimen. I did 6 on soaking wet hair, then the next night, just 4. And I 2 strand twisted for some definition...
