Pics of Hair at 8 Months? Ponytail?

One of my friends is BCing next month (yay! ) at 8 months post relaxer. She has 3c/4a hair and is worried about how short it will be.

Can you please post any pics of your hair at around 8 months post relaxer (straight and/or curly)? Also, about how long was it (in months) before you could put your hair in a ponytail (or ponypuff)? Thanks!
Unfortunately, I dont have any pictures since it has been YEARS since my BC. Maybe some other ladies can share.

One thing your friend needs to keep in mind is that everyone's hair grows at a different rate - some faster some slower, so she may not have the same length of hair as someone else at 8 months of growth. Because of this, pictures of an individual's hair at 8 months will not be an accurate assessment of what her hair will look like once she trims off the relaxed ends.

Also hair type, texture, and density will also determine how the hair will "look" which, again, is a very individual thing. If she is worried about how her hair will look after the BC and how short it will be, then maybe she should consider transitioning for a longer period of time. On average, hair will grow 6 inches in a year so at 8 months she may only have about 4 inches of nautral hair. Also unlike her relaxed hair, her natural hair will now curl or shrink up shorter depending on her hair characteristics once then straigh ends are gone.

I know BC's are very exciting and nerve wrecking times, but remind your friend that she needs to be realistic about her expectations.
Over 10 years natural and still growing...
My hair grows at about 1/2 inch per month, so at 8 mons (which coincidentally was the same time that I did my BC), my hair was a bout 4 inches long. Add in shrinkage and you get a cute little TWA. If I can find a pic, I'll try to post it later when I get home.

It definitely wasn't long enough for a ponytail at that stage, but I think I made one at about 8 to 10 inches...maybe. I don't remember exactly but I do remember being overjoyed at being able to make 2 pony puffs at the base of my head (using lots of gel & bobby pins) and using scarves & headbands to create the illusion of a big puff even long after I'd been able to create a 'real' one.

Tell her it'll be fine and to have fun with it. Before she knows it, she's going to have a head full of hair to deal with and be yearning for the carefree days of shorter hair.

I think that's a great summary sobecurl. I've come to realize that there are so many other issues you should be worried about before BC'ing that doesn't really involve length. If you practice healthy hair care then your hair will grow.

Maybe your friend should re-evaluate why she has decided to BC.

It took me a lil over a year to BC, because I wasn't mentally ready for the change. I too was length obsessed and didn't want to BC until I was able to fit my hair into a ponytail. Just the beginning of this month it dawned on me that I should be concerned about the overall health and 'feel' of my hair, not the length. So I bc'd and i'm happy I did!

Anyways, good luck to your friend I hope she decides to join the natural crew!

(If she is persistant about seeing pictures you can look at my Fotki, I have month 8 transitioning pictures)

This was my hair 2 months after my final chop. I transitioned for 14 months and 3 little chops. Not quite pony-worthy.

Couldn't get all of my hair into a pony tail until about a year after my BC, January 2010...about 16 months I believe post relaxer.
I BC'd right at 8 months and had enough hair to put into a puff. I can post a few pics for you. Hope this helps

I BC'd at 15 months and was able to put my hair in a high pony (with some tendrils hanging out). I'm guessing at 8 months I wouldn't have been able to do that, but I probably could have pulled off some sort of puff.
I bc'd after 8 months of transitioning. The photos can be seen in "The Big Chop" folder under my Fotki link below (Warning: Enter at your own risk; Fotki has been giving some PCs viruses lately). I had 4 inches of new growth but when I bc'd I cut it down to 3 inches of hair, to make sure I cut off all the relaxed ends.....

I was able to do a small puff immediately, which can be seen in the "First Month of Natural Hair" photo album.

I BC'd at 4 months post relaxer, and when I was 8 months post relaxer, I couldn't make a ponytail at ALL! But now, at 11 months post relaxer, I can! It's 6.5"
Current length: 7"
Type: 4a/4b
