I sometimes use Ion Repair Solutions Reconstructor Treatment (from Sally's). I used it every other week for a bit while my hair was recovering from damage from weather (cold and sun) or swimming and now only use it once a month or as needed.

Its keratin based and its one of the best I've used so far.

LMBO@ Reeky! I did use the AOGPB on dry hair, but I also smelled the scent later in the day. It's like a strong ginger scent and every now and again I was like 'what's that smell??? Oh, it's me!' But I tell you that TJ Nourish just smelled like old lady perfume and made me wanna gag! I thought for a min. that I was pregnant (but no dice). I had to take the other bottle back, lol.

Thanks ladies for all of the recommendations, I know what to try when my hair gets used to the AOGPB.

Is this a leave in or rinse out treatment?

See?! The info in this thread is a great example of how this board is responsible for beautiful and healthy 4a hair everywhere. Look at all these recs. Good lord!

Ha! My hair must be protein anemic because that Hydrolized wheat protein is the main reason I use ecostyler consistently. I've been using the olive oil one for a month. I think I love it better than the clear for styling purposes, but the clear was definitely better with keeping the protein-moisture balance. I guess that wee bit of industrial olive oil in the product is tipping my hair over the moisture edge.

Right!? So I didn't want to mention the decrease in shed hairs because I cannot logically understand how a product can affect my actual hair follicles...but...it's true! I usually can't wait to finish detangling and washing just to see how clean my bathtub and brushes are. I wonder how and why protein stops shedding. Anyone know?

I've never heard of this but will definitely give it a try. Is it pretty inexpensive? How often do you use it? I love aveda thus far, but $26 for a small bottle that lasts 4 washes. Yeah...looking into economical alternatives.

I think I might try this, too, if I can find it (no sally's near me ) I'm interested in exploring keratin, silk and soy proteins down the road since most of my products have wheat protein. Afrosheenqueen, I'm assuming Mop Top and Robert Craig have these proteins in them right? How frequent do you use?

Its a rinse out treatment.

You use it after shampooing and leave on for 10 minutes per the directions, but I've left it on for an hour and overnight at one time (after blasting my hair with a dryer at the gym).

If I'm correct, the Ion brand is made for Sally's but you can order it online here.

Its 16 oz and it will last a loooong time.

I used them daily in winter. Mop Top is too heavy for me in spring, winter, fall, but just right in the winter. Mop Top's Deep Conditioner is heavenly.

Love this thread. I thought I was protein sensitive the first 6 months too. Then I read struttswife book and realized I had fine thick hair. So I have been in love with protein ever since that ah-ha moment.

I use protein something everyday.

I have been playing with Curl Junkie Intense Fix and I like it a lot. It's expensive for the size bottle; so I will definately be checking out these other products.

I also use Curl Junkie Coffee Coco Curl Cream. It has protein in it as well. My curls love this stuff. I usually use it under kccc.

This is the thread for me. . . I use AO GPB and AO Swimmer's. I have noticed that the Swimmer's (vegan alternative to GPB) is a bit more effective even than the AOGPB. I discovered an article while surfing the other day which noted that vegetable protein was better at penetrating the hair shaft or something along those lines. My experience supported this but it was nice to have scientific evidence!

Also, I SWEAR by AO Blue Green Algae Protein Mask. It is expensive but sooo worth it. I use it sparingly to "boost" the Swimmers or give a protein boost to a moisturizing conditioner when needed. I use it straight if I have been slacking on the protein treatments (no, never that!) Honestly, I would use this in lieu of Henna if I did not have gray hairs to cover.

It took me waaay too long to discover how much my fine, delicate hair needed protein. I think I am going to finally buy that ebook as well. It sounds like a wealth of information.

Default Thanks

Thanks so much ladies for the info and recs. My hair in the back is so fine, its almost wispy. I am definitely going to try more protein. I had stayed away from it since my twa days.

thanks for this thread bc now i have plenty of other protein treatments to try! i'd like to try aphogee bc i think i need an intense treatment, but i'm scared of its notoriously stinky smell!
ooh that roux porosity stuff? i was looking at in sally's today. i've seen raves about it but i saw a leave in, shampoo, conditioner so i have to see what folks are using.

Did you ladies know that there is about the same amount of protein in a 1/4 c of flaxseeds as there is in one egg...6 grams! That must be why my hair loves FSG...been using it for about a month

Really?? That's interesting! My hair loves FSG. I was having breakage issues and my hair totally turned around moisture and shedding wise once I started using this daily before my conditioner.

roux porosity and mendex are different products. i've used a few bottles of the roux porosity and i liked it. most people use the conditioner only.

my hair doesn't like fsg unless it's in my rinse out conditioner. if left in my hair, it's hard, crunchy, brittle feeling.

If I could, I could do a protein treatment every week and my hair would eat it up. Whenever I would henna (I know henna is not a protein, it acts like one) and leave it in overnight, my hair would be REALLY SOFT!!!!

Now, I used to use the AO GPB conditioner every week and my hair would feel great (but I was using chemical color at the time.) I've also used the Aphogee Keratin and Green Tea Reconstructor spray (after shampooing) and the 2-minute reconstructor in the past and they've both left me with really soft hair. But now, I only use Oyin Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner which has silk protein in it and it is my staple condish.
