I want to dye my hair light brown

Well, I tried (on a small section of my hair) and there was no change in color. I used Clariol's Textures and Tones (permanent dye). Do I have pre lighten my hair to use this? I have dark brown hair.

I know that's how they used to do it. First they'd bleach the hair and then put the dye in. Especially if you're going substansially lighter. Dunno if they have a new method now.

Maybe you can try a darker colour like a medium brown so you wouldn't have to bleach as much.

You can also use a cream developer to lighten your hair w/o using the bleaching powder to go with it. If you use just the cream developer, try not to go higher than 30 because that can be way harsh on the hair. It just takes a little longer to lighten using only the developer as opposed to using the bleaching powder with it.

I lightened my hair first before coloring w/bleach. I added a tablespoon of olive oil & a tablespoon of conditioner w/my bleach to prevent overdrying and breakage. The kind of powder I used was Clairol Kaleidocolors Violet w/20 developer. Once I lightened my hair I applied my color over it & it came out beautifully.
The color booster that comes with the hair dye makes it brighter, but make sure to mix it well. Without it the color won't really show up.

I'm afraid of bleach/developer and stuff like that. I would hate to damage my hair and I don't trust anyone else on my hair. Sad but it's true!!
