I did not actively try to seek out sulfate-free shampoos but so far those are the only products that don't completely dry my hair out. Washing with conditioner (cg method) did not work for me, the build-up on my scalp was terrible. I'm not jumping on another bandwagon simply because a celebrity hairstylist says so.

Default Co-washing blues.

Same here, co-washing (and its buildup) didn't work for me either. I don't know how people do it.

+1 To all of this!

Sulfate shampoos definitely leave my hair feeling brillo paddish (as opposed to sulfate-free shampoos) but though just washing with conditioner was great for my hair it was horrid for my scalp. Even with my leave-in conditioner (KCKT), I am very, very careful to make sure to only apply it to my hair strands unless I want to experience a virtual snow storm of flakes on my scalp.

I don't follow the curly girl method. I use a sulfate free shampoo as a regular shampoo and a sulfate one for clarifying. I can't use conditioner only.

I occasionally use a conditioner to cleanse my hair - it depends on what products I have used during the week.

If I use light products that do not cause build up I use a home made conditioning cleanser using 6% btms 6% aloe vera juice and 5 % coconut oil with 83% water.

If I use heavy oils (castor) and butters on my hair, I will have to use a sulfate free shampoo to ensure that I do not get any build up. I am currently using Naked Rescue Intensive Care Shampoo (http://www.nakedbodycare.co.uk/products.html?p=3) it's designed for frizzy, damaged hair but you don't have to have damaged hair to use it. I always get defined curls when I use this shampoo.

When I first went natural, I tried to co-wash, but my scalp wasn't having it. Every conditioner I tried made my scalp itch like crazy. But, I did discover that Oyin Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner used as a co-wash works out well for my hair. I also like the Curls for Target Curl Cleansing Cream. Other than those two, I use a sulfate free shampoo once a week. Shampooing is a must for me.

When I used to WnG, I co-washed every other day until my hair started to get some length. Now I shampoo and condition once a week with sulfate-free products.

I tried it for a little but my scalp was not happy. I use a sulfate free shampoo (Giovanni Smooth as Silk) once a week and a tea tree shampoo once a month to clarify (Giovanni Tea tree).
