Hair Products and Their Bases
First off...let me say that there is NOTHING wrong with a company using bases as long as they are up front with their customers. Sometimes, we don't feel like adding ingredients, or making sure something smells good, so we just go ahead and buy the final version. But, I do think it's important that consumers are aware of these bases in case they want to buy them and tweak to their own liking.
So, what bases do you know? I'll start.

i've said it before and i'll say it again...
there is absolutely nothing wrong with a company using bases (if that's their thing) and i don't believe a company has to divulge this information. there are plenty of companies who private label. i'm not just talking about hair products either. there are big companies who private label to small companies all the time.
take for instance infant (baby) formula. there is an infant formula act for all infant formula in the USA. lots of the top of the line standard and organic baby formula is made under one roof. it is sold for private label to various entities with various price points. it is not disclosed by the companies nor their websites.

I agree, but don't advertise yourself as a mixtress if you are not. Also, there are some companies who don't even tweak the product...they just re-package it and say they mixed it. What? That is a straight up lie. So, if people want to use the base they should at least know about it, IMHO.

Here's one that I recently discovered was a base. I LOVE this as a leave/styler combo so I was surprised to find it was a base. Not hating on the company that's selling it, but I can get it cheaper directly from supplier here.
There's an old thread on here (in one of the other sections of the board) that give a list of products that people love that are really bases so that you can buy the base directly cheaper.

That's the problem I have with a lot of these companies. When you start talking about your products are " made fresh in small batches" and ALL your products are bases (or dayum near all of them) then you honestly can't make that statement. Bases are made in BULK, they are not made in small batches.
Plus there is a difference between "private label agreements" and companies selling the same product manufactured in the same facility under different brands with different price points. Private label agreements are when a formulator stikes a deal with someone what a manufacturing facility to mass product a product for them. The formulator retains EXCLUSIVE rights to the formula, and the owner of the facility gets a flat manufacturing payment.
Companies selling products under multiple names and price points is the same as the difference between buying an Acura and a Honda....everyone knows that an Acura is really just a honda with a different engine and emblem, but they sell it as a totally different brand (Luxury) and at a much different price point.

- Jasmine's Bath and Beauty Babassu Butter conditioner is just straight base with scent added. If you like that conditioner you can find it unscented here. http://www.organic-creations.com/ser...ase/Categories
- Hairveda's conditioners are from a base that is very popular - Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Dimethyl Stearamine, Lactic Acid. I found one version of the base here. You can just add scent and the oils you like. http://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com...er+Concentrate
You can also find that base here - http://www.serenitysoapnshower.com/Product/3239.aspx

Afroveda's Holy Basil, Coconut Moisture, Neem, Kissi, Nu Milk, and Emu are made from this base. You can add ingredients or herbs as you like. http://www.ingredientstodiefor.com/i...category_id=53
Her other conditioners are from the Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol (together these are called Cetearyl, the name she uses), Stearalkonium Chloride, Dimethyl Stearamine, Lactic Acid type of base I mentioned above.
Mala also gets NatureMulse, the emulsifier she uses for her butters, from here as well. I bought some to experiment with.

I agree, and I mean I think it's a little insulting - there have been many times where I wish a certain ingredient was in a product but I don't want to ruin it, and later I find out it's just a base!! When a mixtress has a formulation, I'm like oooh okay, she must know what she is doing, that must be good. But if it's a base, why can't I play with it to tweak for my hair?

Exactly girl! ITA with ya Elle, especially with all the price gouging and fickle practices going on. It really doesn't hurt to take that extra step and investment.

I think Mala uses a base for her butters too.
Only thing different in her butters are the oils/essential oil blend she uses.
