JessicazFro, I believe the cherry lola treatment is a more natural alternative to open up hair cuticles.

From what I've read, dyeing your hair your natural color or darker is supposed to be less damaging, since lifting the pigment out of the hair shaft isn't required. You'll have to read ingredient lists because some dark colors still lift and deposit, instead of just deposit. If you're not interested in changing your hair color and you don't have a lot of pesky grays, maybe try a semi-permanent color. It's supposed to be better for the hair, and it only deposits color (check to be sure though). Having said all this, I don't know how much your porosity will change with each product (cherry lola, permanent color, semi-permanent color). If you don't give a hoot about color, I'd look into the cherry lola first.

ETA: I've done Clairol Natural Instincts, henna/indigo, and Bigen, but I can't offer squat about porosity, because I'm focused on covering the grays...any porosity changes have gone unnoticed.

So what are some styling tips for thin haired naturals?
I have yet to see a thin looking WnG. She should try to rock that. To add to what kayb and BugEyeZ said...for braidouts/twistouts, make random parts, or they'll look "piecy", and don't make them too small (thin hair doesn't require many). I like flat twistouts, myself. The biggest thing is patience. She'll probably have to experiment a few times with each style before she likes what she sees. Now, if she's rocking the phony pony to cover up a patch of short/broken off/"thinned-out" hair, she may be reluctant change up.
I agree with the bold.

I consider my hair to be thin and I mostly wear braidouts. My hair will start to look thicker as the braidout gets older. Something I picked up from a thin haired natural on YT is picking from the roots only to give it a little more volume, that helps. Also if I do twist outs on dry hair it looks so much fuller. The annoying thing is that no matter how big I do a braid or twist it always seems to come out the same size! I want to get that chunky look sometimes and it just doesn't work . I posted some pics of my hair because I've tried to search for thin natural hair pics online with little success.

Braidout on damp hair...

This is an old twistout...
(my son's cute little curly bush )

This was done on dry hair...

The side part looks a little crazy to me because I didn't know what to do with the front. I still haven't found any products that gives me results similar to my wet braidouts. Being the PJ that I am I'm so open to suggestions! Hint Hint!

HTH some Cali!

I used it before my deep condition, so it will make my deep conditioner soak in more.

I thought I had low porosity, but after using roux, my hair felt "dry wet" when I doused it with water. It was a weird feeling. Not sure if that means it worked or didn't or if i was highly porous before and it corrected that.

Things that are water based are moisturizers.
so is it over kill to layer herbal oil, shea butter, and then EVOO over my leave in...?

Does the following sound like a decent protein treatment?

Why do people always add mayo to homemade protein treatments?

COCONUT PROTEIN HAIR TREATMENT
The protein from the eggs and the moisturizing qualities of the other ingredients will revive even the most damaged hair. Use once a week for a month, then monthly thereafter.
Ingredients:

2 eggs
3 Tbsp coconut milk
2 Tbsp honey
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a bowl with a fork until combined.
Apply to wet hair prior to shampooing.
Allow to set for 30 minutes.
Rinse well with warm water.
Shampoo as usual.
Try to avoid using blow dryers and other styling equipment.

How to keep a flat twist out for more than one day? especially if your hair HATES 2 strand twists?

I finally achieved a style (all on my own, go me!) that i love, but once i woke the next day (after sleeping with a bonnet and loosely 2 strand twisting it) and my hair looked like "who did it and WHY???" it was frizzy, tangled flat.

please help!

Yes, I would like to know this too. I also have some questions that I guess are extensions of that post. When my natural hair is out I have the "just got my hair done" problem. Meaning I'm scared to sleep on my hair b/c it will become a mess. I want to know what everyone else's 2nd day hair looks like. Mine is a complete frizzball by the 2nd day where I had curls the day before. I know a lot of other ppl say they can't achieve 2nd day hair either so what do you do? To the ppl who cowash everyday...what in the world do you do during the winter???

I made a post on this yesterday and everyone so far said they loosely rebraid or twist.

Default A Question I'm Sure Nobody Can Answer

You want random?....

So, I love to enter the Allure (Magazine) Free Stuff contests they have, especially in August, when they have the most stuff. However, I don't always win the stuff I want and sometimes I get stuff in the mail from contests I don't remember entering.

Among my winnings lately are: hot rollers (I don't even know how to set my hair!), a mini-flatiron (for my huge hair!?) and a bottle of (Garnier) silicone straightening serum...

The question is: Is this some sort of cruel message from the pagan gods of straight hair?

Ok ladies. Do any 4's use shampoo bars? I used to shampoo once a month and cowash several times a week, dc once a week. Then I started cowashing once a week and shampooing once a month. Then I saw shampoo bars on KBB website and started using those. I haven't been using anything with cones or mineral oil since I went natural, but I want to try Aussie moist and it has cones. Does anyone know if shampoo bars will wash cones out of your hair? I've decided to ditch CG and not to exclude products from my routine if they work, but I have cold feet about ruining my hair's progress if I get buildup from the cones.

I don't use oils, but I use my butters after my leave-in to seal in the moisture. And +1 on JahNaturalDezign's comment. I have fine hair and also mostly wear braidouts, in fact, if that wasn't her face, I would think that was my hair in her picture. My hair also seems to thicken after the 2nd day, and no matter the size of the braids, I can never get a chunky look. Maybe I braid too tight.

Unless the 'cones are water soluble, a shampoo bar will not take them out. For 'cones that are insoluble in water, you need an SLS cleanser--low poo won't cut it.

Damn, I was afraid of that. Well thanks, now to figure out if I should go out and buy regular shampoo or not even bother to try the Aussie. Maybe I should try oils again instead? Oh the pj in me is always trying to mess up a good thing...sigh.

Anyone have a ConairPro YellowBird dryer? I want one, they're so cute and bright! But...if it sucks I don't want it. Right now I have a Chi Rocket and it's not that awesome to me, especially for how much the dang thing costs.

Elle, it's been a few years, since I've bought a blowdryer, but I thought all the "good" ones used ion technology (someone correct me, if I'm wrong)? I didn't see "ionic" in the description, and it may not matter to you anyway, if you're going for big hair. I bought this one from Conair when I first went natural, because it came with a diffuser and it had dual voltage. I used it for the first time just last week.

Since we're on the the topic, I had this one as a permie, and it still works great.

I have one. An old stylist recommended it to me years ago and I've had it for many years. Great blow dryer.

Thanks Lisa! I kind of think the whole ion thing with blow dryers is marketing hype - I've had both kinds and never noticed a difference in my hair. And the Chi Rocket is like, a $150 ion dryer and I am oh so not impressed with it! Especially now that I'm natural - I think it was good when I was relaxed b/c on high it dried my hair pretty fast, but my hair doesn't feel any nicer to smoother using it now...I hate how my hair feels if I blowdry it on high actually. Bleh! But I'm rambling, lol!

Thanks girl! I have a 25% off coupon at Folica so I think I'm going to get it.

For anyone else the coupon is friends25 and it's for orders $50+.
