thinking of two strand twists with added hair...

Hi!
I want to take a curl break, and am thinking about getting two strand twists with added hair. I also need my ends trimmed. What's the best way to go? Trim, then get twists, or trim after I take them out? What is the best type of hair to use ( I want them to look natural, and not bulky)? How long should I keep them in? I have heard that longer than one month is not good for the hair? I can wash them, right? What's the best way to maintain? Sorry for so many questions, but I want to make sure that I don't damage my hair, or hairline while taking a break. Any advice ( or links) would be appreciated! Thanks!

Kinky twists are a great protective style. If you are not doing them yourself (and you most certainly can, or learn if you don't know how to), make sure the person who does them doesn't do them too tight especially on the hairline.

I do my own. I keep them for 2 months and I wash after 4 weeks (with a baking soda solution). I don't use heavy products, just a spritz twice daily and a scalp massage with a pomade once to a few times a week. You must make sure to keep your hair (the whole length of it) moisturized, that will reduce breakage and damage.

How you maintain your twists is up to you. There are ladies who cowash every week or every few days, I can't do that (I don't cowash my loose hair anyway)

You don't have to trim your hair before you get twists. In fact, when you have blunt ends they are more likely to stick out of the braids. I would trim after you take them out (if you need a trim). Unless you need a trim really badly and your ends are super damaged.

I use nafy collection hair. It's the best hair I have used for twists. It's synthetic and looks very natural. I get it here.

Oh also, make sure you cover your hair up at night. I use a silk bonnet. Also to protect your hairline, you shouldn't tie tight pony tails

Thanks so much, Coilynap. Very informative. I live in Westchester, but close to NYC-is this hair easily gotten in BSS's?

I've never seen it at a BSS, but I know some ladies have said that they've found it at a BSS. So you should check

Thanks again! Maybe by the time I get it done, I will know how to post pics. How many packs of hair do you use when you purchase? I don't mind getting too much, but I don't want to have too little....

The most I've ever used is 1.5 packs (I also cut the hair in half). Again, I do it myself so I don't do it as small as a braider would. Depends on how thick your hair is. I would say 3 packs should be enough especially if you are cutting the hair in half
Thanks for being so helpful, patient, and informative!

Oh, no problem. Were you able to get the hair at your local BSS? There are other brands you can use so if you don't find that exact one it's ok.

I hope you are able to get what you want
