Afroveda
Hello all,
After finally finding a perfect regimen, I noticed that Afroveda changed their formulas when I was trying to order during the sale yesterday.
After researching a bit, I noticed there was a price and formula fiasco in October. It would've been great to receive a courtesy email, as I have purchased from there before, but oh well!
Anyway, I'm still doing research today, but I cannot find any info on whether the new formulas work like the old ones. I'm mostly interested in CocoLatte Moisture Mask and PUR Whipped Hair Gelly. Does anyone know if these products work the same?
I'm also open to alternatives. I know Oyin Handmade's Whipped Pudding is comparable to CocoLatte, but I've tried that and my hair likes Afroveda's version better. I also like the soft hold and definition the PUR Whipped Hair Gelly produces, but I'm not sure of an alternative for that one. Anyone have any other suggestions?
The regimen I have is:
-Detangle and braid in the shower with Trader Joe's Nourish Conditioner
-Wash with Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla
-Re-condition with Trader Joe's Nourish Conditioner
-Detangle sections with Afroveda's BARE Leave-In Detanlge Spray out of the shower
-Apply a good amount of Afroveda's CocoLatte to each section
-Apply PUR Whipped Gelly on top of the CocoLatte
-Seal sections with Afroveda's Shikakai Hair Growth Elixir
-Twist sections, then untwist in the morning
Sorry so long! Thanks!

I can't speak for everyone, but I know that I won't be trying her new stuff. Too much shade going on in that business for me, especially after we found her bases and she took the ingredients off her site.
There are some videos on AfroVeda replacements on YouTube.

I don't think anyone purchased products from Afroveda after the price hike, but IIRC, one person ordered twice in a month & received an older batch with the first order & a new batch with the second order.
Here is her Youtube review:

FIY, I'm still looking for replacements for the Cocolatte & Pur Whipped Gelly, too.
Here's EllePixie's Youtube on substitutes for a few of the Afroveda products she used:

Thanks to both of you. It's kind of frustrating. I thought I was done searching for products and wasting money! I'll check out the links. Hopefully, it's not a long process like before...

Sorry to say that NO the products are not the same. I'm the youtuber mentioned above that did the comparison video. The CocoLatte is much thinner than before. It's so runny now. I did try it on my hair despite others saying that I shouldn't and my 4a thin fine hair didn't like the new CocoLatte. My hair was rather dry like straw.
In the end I sold 2 of the new versions in a swap. Others I just dumped the product in a bowl and added shea butter to it. I use it every once in a while because I just didn't want to waste my money. I only use it when I'm wearing a bun because it doesn't work for me on any twists or styles.
I was truly upset because the previous version worked for my hair and after i got the products the first time I ordered a MASS purchase (all within one month) and two days later the prices shot up like crazy. So when my MASS purchase came in it was the New Version and it sucked. Then I started to see that the products started seperating and looked like they were about to spoil. So that's when I did the above video so that people can see that there is a major difference the the products that you are getting and in my opinion it's not worth it.
I haven't purchased anything from AfroVeda since the scandal broke out. I did get a free sample (some 1 or 2 ounce jar) from one of her vendors, I didn't order AfroVeda, I ordered a different company but the free sample was something called twisted ginger or totally twisted. I didn't like that either.

Thanks makeupvixen. I saw a lot of talk about the new formula but was really curious about how the new formula performed. You cleared it up for me. Back to searching for products that agree with my hair...sigh.

What is the shelf life of Afroveda products? I have 3 full jars of the old formula of her products. I opened the jars and I don't see any mold at all. I wonder if they are still good? If they're alright... I will put them on the swap board. Otherwise I'm going to trash em'!

I actually bought the 32oz sizes last February, and none of my products have gone bad - but I keep them in the fridge and scoop them out in 8oz (I have 8oz jars from her and I just add more to them).
If you put them on the swap board, just make sure you include pictures and tell people when you purchased them.

I bought a 16oz size of the PUR Whipped Gelly last year April and it's still very good. It does not work for me anymore though. Also, I've stopped using the products since Mala did some reformulating about twice. My fav was once the Holy Basil Condish then she reformulated and my hair stopped responding to it. Oh well, I found others that replaced the line.

I only had one really start to go old on me and that was the Shea Amla, the old version. But since AfroVeda doesn't put expiration dates on their products and you never really know when she mixed these things it's hard to tell. I wouldn't put it past Mala that I had a 7 month old product or not, you just never know with them.
I have had the seperating of oils and changing of smells with 2 Shea Amla's (old version) and one Hemp Seed (new version).
I have kept everything in the fridge after learning about this drama. I have one in the fridge and whatever is left is in the freezer. I'm trying to use up this AfroVeda stuff so i can move one to my Qhemet Biologic supply and Oyin Handmade that I have in the freezer. (Yup a true product junkie, lol)

Sometimes it won't even mix back together if you shake it, and no, it's not normal for oils to separate from the rest of a product, unless the product melts - but once it solidifies it should go back to normal.
ETA: We're also not talking about oils and waters separating, like what frequently happens in liquid leave-ins...these are creams and butters that you can't shake.

I'm not sure about the shelf-life but I have 2-16 ounce containers of Shea-Amla. I keep one in the fridge and one in the freezer. I purchased them six months ago and they are still good.
Side note: To help with the shelf life of any product, never dip your fingers into the batch. Spoon out only the amount you'll need and put it in another container.

Thanks for viewing.
It is terrible and a mess and she is getting away with it. I just wanted to show people that we are not only upset with the price hike but the lies and the inconsistency in her product and company.
A friend of mine met her at a recent convention in TX and I was told that she wasn't very nice to people. She said some people were asking her about the inconsistency in her products and she couldn't give an answer. I wish I was there to hear it for myself so I don't want to comment too much on it. I know to keep a video camera on me at all times, LOL.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!
It is not "normal" for a product to separate. For vinaigrette, yes, for a body or hair butter, lotion, NO. That's why we have emulsifiers. Products can separate after a long time (over a year maybe)--and if they are made correctly, no, but receiving products already separated is unacceptable. If a product is not emulsified, it will NEVER come together whether you shake it up ten times or not. The chemistry of cosmetic making requires heating two phases and combining them at high temp (when they are more soluble). So...NO

Afro Veda Product Problems
I had no idea any of this was going on as I love the original formulation of AfroVeda products. With the rediculous price hike(right after I bought a lot of stuff during her sales period in May 2010) I decided I was not going to buy anything unless there was a 20% discount. I have an order in at this very moment. However I'm not worried because I only bought shampoo, oil and conditioner. I have her original butters to last me till this time next year.
However, this fiasco that you all describe explains why she had a pre-black friday sale of 30%!!
btw Shea Moisture looks like a very promising line and it is available at Target (and indirectly from Amazon.com). You get 12 oz for about $10 - 12

I don't really care about the price hiking/lack of integrity or whatever lol Homegirl was offering a 30 PERCENT discount and I was all over it like brown on rice I would like to hear from anyone who's used both the PUR Gelly and the KCCC...I bought some PUR to layer over a leave in and band over night the way I do with the CC...if anyone has experience with both--are they comparable at all?

PUR Gelly isn't comparable to KCCC at all. I haven't used my PUR Gelly in almost two months because it stopped giving the hold I wanted.
