Default Do best way to get curls without pressing hair then using rollers?

I have never used gel before, does that actually work?
i heard that gel causes your hair to get hard. Is this true?
Also do alot of people use gel in their hair?

I'm very limited on products i use on my hair, i only use Hollywood beauty olive oil and BioInfusion
been using this stuff for years, it's good moisturizer

Also what would you use gel for? how would you apply it? like you apply oil? or do you twist your hair and then apply it?
I like curls like this

Without having to use a hot comb to straighten and then rollers(like i use to when i was little)
