Natural hair in Military basic training?

Like Tree1Likes

I just wanted to say thanks for all the info... I've been searching for information on what to do for when I get to basic. I ship out 20100518, and I'm trying to get prepared in all aspects. This was a major question that I had and reading what everyone had to say is more than helpful.
will we be able to buy conditoner at nex or only shampoo? i'm really nervous about that because naturally straight people may be able to get away with that, but not me. ♥

They monitor what you buy to make sure u don't buy candy etc., but I believe you can buy some if I recall correctly. It won't be anything top of the line though, probably something like Suave or Pantene or something.

Not only that but you really won't have much time to fuss with oils and rinses etc. You may not even get the chance to go to the NEX for a while, it's at their discretion.

I just remembered that I have a friend that's a recruit division commander (RDC) out there in Great Lakes. If anyone has any specific questions I can always ask her for you guys

I mean I only wash, condish & protective style once a week & moisturize twice a day but from the sounds of things it seems like I won't even be able to keep that up. I'm convinced now that I should just get my hair cornrowed & place it into a bun by my neck & call it a day. That way at least all I have to do is worry ab keeping my hair moisturized each day.

Oh no!! They make you chop! The Navy goes hard in the paint, mkay! Do you think she can get away with crochet braids cut into a bob? She can keep all of her hair and get the bob that is easy to maintain at the same time.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, I'm glad this thread got some attention :]

Ok, so I'm pretty relieved that they won't shave my head. And my hair is still pretty much in TWA stage. I just tried on a baseball cap and my hair sticks out of it in the back. It doesn't touch my collar though.

Do you think it would be a better idea to just show up to boot-camp with cornrows?

However I have joined a few military websites where I receive email updates each day with news, changes, etc. ab each military branch. Either way I was on the sites researching hair & alot of the ladies were saying that while cornrows & braids should be ok that some specific places will not allow u to have them. So its a good idea to check out the specific place u will be going and their regulations.

Also the ladies stated that while they were allowed to have braids & cornrows when they arrived they were all made to take them out the last week (I think they called it warrior week) bc they were all told they had to look uniform. They even stated that a few of the girls had micros & they were made to remove them as well.

So w/that being said I'm just going to check into my indiv. base to make sure they're ok & if they are then get cornrows & put them in a bun at the base of my neck. Plus I will also have a back up plan for what to do w/my hair that last week just in case u do have to remove them. Alot of the ladies suggested practicing some styles before u go so that ur not scrambling even more so in the am & bringing bobby pins/the old school flat barrette's (that must match ur hair color btw) just in case.

I was in the Navy so I can only speak on that branch. The only Navy bootcamp is in Great Lakes... As far as cornrows, they'll most likely make you take them out. Loose braids cut into a bob you MAY be able to get away with. I say may because it all depends on who's there at the time you're going through and if they're in a good mood that day...lol. Buns aren't allowed at all. Basically everyone has a bob or shorter. As far as a TWA, as long as it isn't more than 2 inches from your scalp unstretched you should be ok. You can't really expect anything from them...if someone feels like being a jerk and they decided that they don't like your hair they can make you cut it etc.
Bootcamp and if you have an A school after are training facilities, they're trying to make sure that the military regulations and traditions are ingrained in your brain so they're more strict. But once you get to your first duty station everything is totally different. The regulations are still the same but they're a little more lax.

Congrats on your career choice. I've been doing the Marine thing for 18 years. Some (actually a lot) of the regs for us and the navy have changed recently changed. Although there is information allowing afros to be worn in the male regs, nothing is mentioned in the female regs. Here is an excerpt from the order:

"Ponytails, pigtails, widely spaced individual hanging locks, and braids which protrude from the head, are not authorized.
Multiple braids are authorized. Braided hairstyles shall be conservative and conform to the guidelines listed herein. When a hairstyle of multiple braids is worn, braids shall be of uniform dimension, small in diameter (approx. 1/4 inch), and tightly interwoven to present a neat, professional, well groomed appearance. Foreign material (i.e., beads, decorative items) shall not be braided into the hair. Short hair may be braided in
symmetrical fore and aft rows (cornrowing) which minimize
scalp exposure. Cornrow ends shall not protrude from the head, and shall be secured only with inconspicuous rubber bands that match the color of the hair. Appropriateness of a hairstyle shall also be judged by its appearance when headgear is worn."

Ultimately, what you can and can't do will be determined by your instructors, but I'd suggest against braids because you will not have time to properly care for them or take them down if they start to look bad. Hope this helps.

SK

See that thing sleeping in the corner? That's my GoGo Dancer and the source of all the white hair on my head... I am not going gray, dammit!
I'm natural and in the navy! Im actually blogging about it. I love that the military is becoming more open to natural hair. Natural Hair In The Military
afrosheenqueen likes this.
Former Army here, but I wasn't natural then.

You're going to have next to no time to do your hair. And if your training is anything like mine, you won't have much energy to do it. If you can do small twists or bun, I say go with that.

Practice your most low maintenance hairstyles now that aren't bulky. won't fly. Be prepared to give up some cuteness as well! Best of luck and thanks for serving!

I've heard of girls that got mold or other serious issues with their hair from having in braids/weaves... or just didn't have the time to properly take care of it due to time.
Is there anything I can do to keep my curls looking great and healthy while at bt?
I joined the Navy and I go to boot camp this March.

Just wondering does anyone have any experience as a natural in military boot camp (Navy preferably, as they're the one branch that cuts the females hair).

My hair is still pretty short but do you think they'll shave my head?
